Matt Hughes to the rescue

Matt Hughes has announced that he will be facing Thiago Alves at UFC 85. Looks like this is the big replacement that makes up for the fact that Chuck Liddell dropped out of the event with a pulled hamstring. I gotta say I’m pretty impressed at the news … I honestly didn’t think Hughes would be willing to step up and fight someone dangerous like Alves when he’s got a huge paycheck waiting in the wings against Matt Serra.

Thiago Alves knows the score … the welterweight division is stacked like a motherfucker and beating Matt Hughes is the perfect way to cement his place as next in line after Jon Fitch. I am left kinda wondering why Jon Fitch wasn’t the one who answered the call … he’s always talking high and mighty about just wanting the challenges and not giving a shit about belts or title shots. Who knows, perhaps if he beat Hughes it would legitimize his chances against GSP the way a tepid judge’s decision against some UFC virgin simply can’t.

So how about we all gang up on Fitch now for ducking Hughes to babysitting his title shot, the same way we bagged on Karo Parisyan for something similar?

  • Matt Hughes via dry hump.

  • Lifer says:

you KNOW he’s looking directly at God.

  • x5BoltMainx says:

Fucking a, this card just got interesting. Only way Hughes wins is by lay & pray, other wise, he’s getting KO’ed like he did against GSP (twice).

  • ninjitsu says:

You guys totally miscalled this. I’m too lazy to find it, but didn’t specifically say Matt wouldn’t step up and help out for UFC 85?

  • Higgz says:

Maybe Fitch wasn’t given the opportunity. Fitch has a realistic chance of beating Hughes which could potentially damage a great PPV against Serra. Perhaps they didn’t want that.

I know that Hughes’ blog said he’d fight Serra in 6-8 months which wouldn’t be in jeopardy by this fight.

  • Lifer says:

unless thiago actually kills him. TAP TAP TAP!! WAAAAAGH!!

  • ninjitsu says:

I guess I should read the post before I comment because you’re all “…I honestly didn’t think he’d step up!”.

Well fuck off. It’s friday and I’s the drunk.

  • Accomando says:

    From Matt Hughes blog…

“…June 7th, in England, I fight Thiago Alves. The fight is confirmed, it will be the main event for the card. Dana just called me with the news. Chuck got hurt and couldn’t fight, so he needed a replacement and called me and I said yes. More news as I get it. No matter what happens in this fight, I’ve got Serra next. -matt…”

Matt can’t lie, or he’ll go to hell, ninjitsu, the fight in On1

  • godzillad says:

Hughes by submission. If Spencer Fisher did it, Matt Hughes can.

  • dignan says:

For as much as I dislike Hughes, I hope he gets a big paycheck for this fight.

Big Name + Short Notice + Big Risk = Nice Cheque.

    Otherwise why would he?

  • RT says:

It gives the UK fans a legitament main event and could potentially create a new star in Alves, its really good match making. As for Fitch my guess is they probably didnt offer him the fight, as I doubt Hughes would want to do it in the first place and Thiago vs Fitch isnt main event matierial yet.

  • garth says:

i think you guys have made this point basically, but it seems like a loss for hughes at this point in his career doesn’t really hurt him. he’s still very marketable and a serra-hughes grudge match is still going to draw a lot of interest from the TUF fans. whereas with a win his “legend” grows, and suddenly his fight against serra is for two straight high-quality WW wins…. now we know where that leads…

  • ninjitsu says:

Yeah, UFC85 just got alot more interesting. I’d rather see Hughes-Alves than Liddell-Evans.

My guy reaction is to pick Alves to win by KO.

  • ninjitsu says:

    gut reaction*. fuck.

  • Boog says:

” now we know where that leads…”

It sure as hell doesn’t lead to a fourth fight with GSP.

  • garth says:

we’ll see huh? you know hughes’ wang is halfway down dana’s throat about 9 days out of ten. “the greatest welterweight of all time!!”
    from lifer upthread:

  • I think Hughes takes it. I think GSP is just Hughes’ Kryptonite. I think Alves has a shot but if Hughes gets him down its over.

  • esther says:

After GSP, weren’t they trying to retire Hughes in the cage and even right after — back and forth retire retire retire… I remember finding it hilarious but oh so mean.

  • Asbel says:

wow. hughes steps up to save another ppv and still gets hated on.

  • Boog says:

“wow. hughes steps up to save another ppv and still gets hated on”

I’m not hating on him. I’m glad he’s stepping up here. But I don’t think he’ll ever fight GSP again.

  • Boog says:

heh, didn’t even notice that was you, Asbel.

  • Asbel says:

yeah, that was my first post since i don’t read the comments much. love the blog and thinking of buying a human cockfighting shirt though.

  • andres says:

That bitch lives in my backyard haha if I knew where he lived id tell him hey on behalf of fightlinker

    “FUCK YOU!”

  • dignan says:

Asbel: I hate on almost everything and everyone…but I am stoked he’s stepped up. Impressive.

  • Fairly solid main event. I would have preferred Chuck and Shogun but this will have to do.

    Hughes via rasslin’

  • Asbel says:

dignan: I rather like that Fightlinker shits on everything and everyone. But I just can’t talk shit about a good fight. Big props to Hughes for this one.

  • Gilbert says:

I hate you Matt Hughes… but god damn it, I respect you!

  • Teufel says:

UFC 85 is looking pretty solid now. Hughes/Alves, Leben/Swick, Werdum/Vera, Davis/Swick and Kampmann/Rivera are all fights I’m eager to see. Evans/Irvin could be interesting, Evans won’t have to change his training much since he was planning on fighting a striker anyway, but at least now he can use his wrestling and snuggle his way to a decision.

  • ajadoniz says:

because fitch is boring, and nobody wants to see hughes and fitch rub it out. thats why.

  • andres says:

    Teuful your an idiot
Unless swick can fight twice in a nite in 2 differnt weightclasses im sorry but guess wat swick-fu suck and he aint gonna so your an idiot haha

  • andres says:

    Teufel your an idiot
Unless swick can fight twice in a nite in 2 differnt weightclasses im sorry but guess wat swick-fu sucks and he aint gonna so your an idiot haha which your probally not but fuck it

  • toolverine says:

I’m looking forward to the Swick/Swick fight.

  • koolpaw says:

    Oh Wow
I remember blog “MMA opinion” called Okami “a a gatekeeper of middleweight” after UFC 82.

Now Hughes will be the gatekeeper of welterweight? Too hard gatekeeper.

  • dignan says:

I’m looking forward to the Teufel vs. andres fight. Battle of poor grammar.

    andres will win easy.

  • atom says:

The best part about this whole situation is that Chuck/Shogun is a possibility again. No main event could have made up for that one, and substituting Evans was obviously a step down, but this is a win-win situation. Bisping/Leben should NOT be a boring fight, nor should it go the distance. I disagree with the notion that Hughes’ drawing power has not declined, but together, these two additions almost make up for the original main event.

Worth noting: Alves has never submitted anyone.

  • atom says:

They just make our comments look more polished. :)

    ($10 on andres)

  • Throken says:

I am excited to see that the UFC stepped up, and didn’t leave Rashad as a main event. Should be a good fight.

  • Dangerfield says:

doing something with your genitals, fightlinker

  • fightlinker is busy being Canadian.

  • andres says:

I think fitch got to him

  • kentyman says:

I think andres just made a complete sentence! 😉

  • andres says:

Well im sobering up and I just found out that you can fight at the age of 17 so im working out haha

  • mjk11 says:

  • I guess nothing interesting has happened like Lutter being cut from the UFC.

  • pillow says:

  • i bet jake got the syph and ryans ass prolapsed like a bloody seas snake.

  • garth says:

this is an epic no-post apocalypse. murder suicide? ex-girlfriend revenge poison ketchup?

  • Carcass says:

Atom: “Worth noting: Alves has never submitted anyone”

Doesn’t he have a black belt though? I remember reading an interview (maybe Aurelio?) that praised his ground skill. Maybe he’s like Wandy…just prefers to bang people out.

  • Alot of fighters have bjj black belts but never use bjj like Serra.

  • andres says:

    He’s a brown belt no?
Or he just got his black belt

Like hughes says you always go back to what your comfortable with except thiagos strength is hughes downfall

  • Hughes always reverts back to beating his family for no good reason. He likes to GNP his dad. I hope he loses.

  • andres says:

Dude that sucks christians do beat there kids allbad

    Thiago by knockout

Thiago went to ATT as just a muay thai striker and there he got his ground skills. Apparently he is a BJJ black belt but he’s still fairly vulnerable to submissions and positions that a true black belt doesn’t find themself in. If Hughes gets Alves down, he won’t get submitted. Alves can only win this on his feet or on top on the ground.

  • Hughes is gonna hump the shit out of Alves for the win.

  • garth says:

that’s an awful mental image clint

I have no idea where you got the idea that Hughes dry humps people. Unless you guys are still the douche bags who like to giggle because grappling looks like the sexual act.

  • I’ve read his book and he basically says that the majority of his fighter were just him taking people down and laying on them. I’m a fan of grappling but thats not what he does. He’s strickly a boring ass wrastler.

Maybe at the start of the career where he didn’t know anything else, but in the past 5 or so years he has learned how to pass the guard and apply submissions. Granted he has fuck all stand-up and is offense off of his back is completely limp dick.

If he’s just a boring ass wrestler then how do you explain his arm bar victory over GSP, his kimura win over Joe Riggs, and his cruicifix demolition of Carlos Newton. If you want to see the difference between Hughes and a boring ass wrestler, watch Sherk vs. Hughes.

  • GSP defeated himself before the fight started, Riggs sucks, and Newton sucks. Sherk is worst than Hughes in boring wrastler department but at least he doesn’t beat his family or talk trash one minute and then preach from the rafters the next.

I’m not disagreeing that Hughes is an absolute cock of a human being but he’s not a boring wrestler.

Your reasons for those guys losing is irrelevant. Sherk, Koscheck and probably even Fitch would have layed on all four of those opponents (or at least attempted to) rather than finishing them the way Hughes did.

In the words of Matt Serra, “Hughes is a dick, but hes a talented dick”.

  • yeah he is talented for being a one dimensional fighter. He does win and I am bias against all wrastlers.

  • frickshun says:

Didn’t Hughes lay on top of Lytle & hold on for dear life?? As much as I’d like to see Alves keep it on the feet, I have a feeling Hughes would prefer not to get KTFO. I see this one being a typical main event bust. When is the last time a main event was truly a great fight??

  • Couture vs Sylvia? That was a great fight but happened a year ago. Hendo vs Rampage was good but happened like 8 months ago.

I just finished reading Hughes book like a couple hours ago. pretty interesting look into how he thinks. He explained how he thinks during fights and how he just goes for take down constantly and lightly punches.

  • Trembling Eagle says:

    Fightlinker are some irresponsible motherfuckers
BUT that might be what makes them so good.

Sherdog puts out a million and one shows but sux ballz.

If by hold on for dear life you mean take Lytle down, get him in side control and work for an arm for three rounds then yes.
