Lesnar vs Coleman = Kimbo vs Tank

What’s the best way to establish a new star? Set him up against an aging legend of the sport, it seems. EliteXC knows this … while Tank Abbott didn’t exactly ‘pass the torch’ to Kimbo Slice (a more accurate description would be that Kimbo TOOK the torch and then sodomized Tank with it), the fight definitely established Kimbo as the new King of Brawlers in MMA.

And for all Dana White’s talk of Gary Shaw being a complete moron, it looks like the UFC liked that idea so much they’ve taken it for their own: they’re putting Brock Lesnar up against Mark Coleman in August. While the matchup certainly excites me more than the prospect of Brock Lesnar fighting Justin McCully, that doesn’t say much. I’d rather drink a cup of Tim Boetsch’s sweat than watch that particular matchup.

I recognize the fight is gonna be great for business. I also ‘get’ the whole wrestler vs wrestler angle and why it’s a smart setup. Coleman’s arsenal basically amounts to his takedowns, ground and pound, and some neck chokes. Since we’re still not sure Brock Lesnar’s neck is even susceptable to chokes, it’s a pretty safe bet this fight won’t end with another pesky submission.

ON THE OTHER HAND, I’m not really a fan of seeing a young guy beat the shit out of my yesteryear idols. Watching Mark Coleman get pounded to a pulp by Fedor was painful to say the least And while Brock Lesnar doesn’t have the technical acumen of Fedor, he’s got retard strength which will translate into a bad night for Mark Coleman. So while my business hat is off to the UFC for setting up a big fight, I’m still not down with them setting up what’s basically a circus match.

wouldn’t it be awesome if someone bought coleman a few sessions at the local bjj gym and he busted out an armbar from the guard or something on brock? i wonder if he even knows what bjj is.

  • Jemaleddin says:

I think you’re missing the most important aspect of this fight: it’s the battle of the pharmacists: whose team (Minnesota Martial Arts/WWE) has better steroids? Whose team will cycle them properly so that they test clean? Is 20 years of increasingly better steroids going to hold up to 10 years of the best ‘roids money can buy?

And the very very best thing that can happen is that Brock loses and has to consider a) fighting for some second-rate promotion, or b) dropping to LHW. How awesome would it be to see an anemic looking Lesnar losing to people that much smaller? I guess there’s also c) which I kind of expect: going to Japan where he can use all the steroids he wants and get paired up against tiny little people for the freak show matches.

The only difference is Tank is nothing but a joke and no one “felt sorry for”. But coleman is a whole new story, especially given the fact that we have to see his damn girls cry a river after seeing daddy getting beat up. FUCK I HATE THIS.

clarification required : was the torch lit?

  • Lesner vs. Coleman = Kimbo vs. Tank is EXACTLY THE SAME THING I THOUGHT when it was announced. It’s the pefect answer to the Tank/Kimbo fight. And personally, I LOVE it. I’ve always been a Coleman fan. I’m very intrigued and impressed with Lesner. It’s a great deal for both fighters. Gives Coleman the respect, cash, and publicity he needs and deserves and gives Lesner an official LEGEND to demolish, similar to Hughes and Gracie except Lesner is not an established MMA veteran yet. It’s great for the fans and great for the sport. I love it. And I like how they gave Coleman his induction into the Hall of Fame FIRST to show all the newer fans this guy is a legitimate Legend in the sport, then they announce his return to the UFC against arguable one of the biggest MMA stars in the world right now=Lesner.

  • dignan says:

Please tell us how much they are paying those two fucking douchebags.

Mark Coleman looks like Vin Diesels dad with ZERO of the talent. Yikes.

  • Luke says:

UFC stole the idea from EliteXC? Anyone remember UFC 60? Or UFC 40? It sounds to me like it should be the other way around.

  • operator says:

Battle of the roid monkeys. Mark Coleman is an asshole with some serious roid rage. I don’t care who wins but it will be interesting either way.

  • kermit.01 says:

Colemans getting old and has to be getting close to his sell by date, and after getting his ass handed to him by Fedor, which theres nothing wrong with losing to Fedor, he is a champion. At least when you lose to the champ, you can say, well hes the champ for a reason. If he loses to Lesnar, he’s ending his career losing to a guy who has the fantasic record of 1-1-0. How awesome would it be if Coleman came out and was able to control Lesnar and land a few big shots for a stoppage?

  • zeke says:

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO COLEMANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN! WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Coleman is going to kick Lesnar’s ass!!! No, seriously it’s going to be sad watching Lesnar overpower Coleman.

  • Eric S. says:

Dang, and I thought I was the only one who thought of that immediately obvious comparison:
    “Brock Lesnar vs. Mark Coleman?
By now most everyone has heard about Mark Coleman claiming that he will be Brock Lesnar’s opponent at UFC 87 in August. Coleman made this announcement after being inducted into the UFC Hall Of Fame at last nights pay-per-view in Columbus. Under normal circumstances, I’d say Mark Coleman is just too old and under skilled to come back into the octagon at the ripe age of 43. But against the under experienced meat head that is Brock Lesnar, this bout should prove to be the UFC’s version of Kimbo Slice vs. Tank Abbott. With Brock playing the role of Kimbo and Coleman being a more athletic version of Tank, we will see if Brock Lesnar can defeat an over-the-hill veteran who probably just wants the fight purse.”

  • godzillad says:

UFC used Tank Abbott to get someone over too…….five years ago. Way to be an alternative, Shaw.

Funny thing is, Tank was always a joke while Coleman was still a diesel about seven years ago. Brock is a legit fighter and Kimbo never will be, so one looks just like a mismatch and the other a waste of time.

  • Steve4192 says:

Please don’t compare the Hammer to Tank. All of Coleman’s recent losses have been to the elite of the elite (Fedor, Nog, Cro Cop). There is no shame in losing to those guys.

OTOH, Tank has been getting his ass kicked by guys ranging from complete clowns (Kimo) to washed up fan favorites (Cabbage) to inexperienced limeys (Turner). Tank hasn’t faced an elite fighter since getting tooled by Rizzo & Mir back when they were still relevant.

Since getting KTFO by Rizzo, Tank has gone 1-8 with his lone victory coming against a washed up Hawaiian punching bag. Over the same time period, Coleman has gone 9-4 with wins over Igor Vovchanchyn, Kazuyuki Fujita, Allan Goes, Don Frye, & Mauricio Rua.

    The Hammer >>>>>>>>>>> Tank

  • Fightlinker Jackal says:

    Fuck Randy vs Fedor.

I want Kimbo vs Lesnar NOW!

  • JMas says:

first of all, i hate the fact that everyone i comparing the Lesner/coleman fight to the Kimbo/Tank fight there is no comapring the two. I know, coleman is not the best oppent for brock but coleman is a NCAA champion, first ever heavyweight champion, pride Open weight champion, has faced top talent all over the world and is a year younger then Randy Couture. Tank on the other hand, is a fat fuck that has a shitty record and has been a lump of shit in this sport for over 2 decades now. And for those of u that think Lesnar is on Steorid your all just hating because u could never look like that, He has look like that since college and has never fail a test ever. he is just a freak athlete and all u people hating on him right now are all goin to have to eat shit when he become heavyweight champion

  • He was caught with HGH, although since that wasn’t illegal at the time where he was, he got away with it.

  • godzillad says:

I know you guys don’t like ghey wrestling but I always followed it. That was not growth that Lesnar had, it was legit supplements. Lab tests proved it. Read some more Wrestling Observer newsletters circa 2000……..BROTHER! WHATCHA GONNA DO?!

  • argalarg says:

UFC needs a good heavyweight. I like Coleman but I hope Lesnar wins. It will be good for the sport.
