It was a roller coaster night of action last night at the HP Pavillion in San Jose as sanshou legend Cung Le defeated Frank Shamrock early in the second round, becoming the new Strikeforce middleweight champion. Le, an underdog in the bout against Shamrock, controlled the fight throughout – first outwrestling the older veteran and then outstriking him with an impressive array of flashy kicks.
The end came at 1:36 of the second round as Cung Le unleashed a devastating reverse spinning jump kick, followed by a traditional sanshou slam. The victorious Le stated that he felt his victory proved that his martial art “isn’t as gay as everyone says it is”.
In other results, Drew Fickett defeated Jake Shields with a flying knee to become EliteXC welterweight champion and Nick Diaz lost to Jae Suk Lim by omoplata.
