LA Times writes about the UFC’s shitty pay

Surprise surprise, the UFC is back in the spotlight regarding fighter pay and the troubles they’ve had because of it. For those of you who are sick of the subject, I’ll let you in on a simple fact: so long as you can get paid more to retile a bathroom than fight in the UFC, shit like this is gonna keep popping up.

As usual Dana White comes across as an asshole, but an asshole with some very solid quotes and talking points. I swear to God, the guy carries around a pad of paper and jots down every witty thought that permeates his bald head. Get him for an interview, and he just follows the flow chart full of notes he’s made (interrupted of course with occassional bouts of tourettes).

All in all, a solid read but nothing we haven’t really heard before. Although I think this might be the first news piece by a major press organization that mentions the idea of a fighter’s union:

Couture said the UFC needs to consider providing “Medical coverage outside the shows, like when we are in training. Those guys making $2,000 to $3,000 a fight who get hurt in training, that’s a shame.”

“A fighters’ union is something that’s been discussed for a couple years. There’s almost this monopoly, but if the fighters could unite about issues such as these bonuses . . . there has to be someone in marquee stature to say he’s sacrificing everything, saying, ‘He can’t make me fight.’ “

Yeah, it’s too bad that rather than stick around and fight for the rights of other fighters, you just took your ball and went home you fucking bastard. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again … MMA needs the right people to stand up against the UFC and help set up basic rights for developing and established UFC fighters. Tito Ortiz and Ken Shamrock ain’t the guys, and Randy blew it. So who the hell is left???

  • I will never get tired of hearing about the low pay of the fighters. It shouldn’t even be called a professional sport (judging by income alone) when most of the audience makes more than most of the fighters. The UFC still has the aura of Arena League Football in that regard.

Dana White may sound entertaining but the joke is on him. These other organizations are serious and their pockets are getting deeper every day. Just look at how Fightlinker has provided more and more attention to other orgs. and their fighters.

  • Michaelthebox says:

    *points at jiujitsu365, laughs*

Come get me when any organization can even touch the pay scale for as many fighters as the UFC has.

  • Jemaleddin says:

    Oh wait. he’s a candy-ass. (I love you, Pride-people!)

  • umm says:

Yeah, HD Net Fights has gotten so gigantic that it gave us Frank Trigg and Edwin Dewees ON THE SAME SHOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh and Bodog had millions to spend on MMA too. How many people bought Fedor vs. Lindland? 12?

Excuse me for not thinking Dana White is losing sleep over this one, jiujitsu.

  • Wu Tang says:

Sakuraba, Bas, Steve Austin, Rick Rude, Orange Robot, Che Guerra, Scientology. Take ur pick.

  • Tommy says:

Same classic saying of All employees, ‘I’m overworked and underpaid’. ‘The boss is rich and I do all the work’. Nobody ever considers their work and expenses. Well take your asses elsewhere if you don’t like it. How can Randy talk about respect and honor when he doesn’t even honor his contract? Where would he be Dana didn’t convince the Fertitta brothers to buy and build the company? A world renoun fighter, own a clothing line, have a successful camp training fighters, a movie star, a millionaire? Nope none of that. Hell this asshole wouldn’t even let people take pictures of him to help promote the sport that was gonna die without it, without getting p a i d. Yeah Danas the asshole and Randy is Captain fucking America alright.

  • scorchamatic says:

the fact that someone in the mainstream media is discussing this could provide the impetus dana needs to do something about this. that’s right……impetus, you motherfucking motherfuckers. impetus.

  • Michaelthebox,

Classic “red herring” technique. I didn’t discuss the pay being offered by other organizations. Giggle about that on your own time.

The issue is the low pay offered by the UFC. It’s low and you know it. Compared to other sports they are getting chump change and the undercards are paid like minor league players, except lower.

Health care, being able to survive between fights and take care of a family are important issues. The fighters could become much better if they were paid better.

  • umm,

It doesn’t matter how big these organizations are right now. It is how big they will become. Do not think for a second that UFC dominance will reign supreme forever or for the next 3 years. In fact, I think many of you are upset because I dared to mention the vulnerability of the UFC. All that is needed is the right organization and circumstances. Many people are trying to figure that out and since I know that deep in your hearts you are fight fans first you will follow any organization that is worthy…..

  • umm says:

I’m not upset at all. I’m laughing at the idea that every year two or three groups come along that are supposedly going to revolutionize MMA and put UFC out of business.

  • Cyrus says:

Randy didn’t blow shit, dude. WTF is he supposed to do? Stay in and whine at his boss publically? That doesn’t work. So, he left. He showed others that they could leave. He’s going to work to make other organizations better. That’s the way to help.

  • Drewdoodoo says:

Didn’t you guys see Rocky? Poor fighters want it more.

  • márcio says:

Dana’s a fucking pimp, until a bigger and fatter pimp comes along and whoops his ass he’ll never learn.
I was betting on Rampage, but he has turned all Jesus freak on us, so I can’t see him putting much of a fight.

  • Xavier says:

Thank god Dana doesn’t listen to this sort of bullshit. The UFC will suck ass if they start overpaying fighters.

  • Jeremy (not that Jeremy) says:

Hey man, tilers had the sense to unionize, and they’ve got a useful trade 😀

  • Tommy says:

I don’t hate the idea of fighter protection like someone getting hurt in training being helped. But lets face it, this is a sport that every puss in the world that seen fight club is trying to jump in. Next thing you know you’ll have people that don’t even belong in the sport getting hurt and not caring because they’re being taking care of. It’s not like football or basketball where they know they’re getting a high quality athlete or even boxing where theve fought many many times before going pro and they know they belong in the sport. Anyone willing to put them 5 onces on is giving a chance. Instead of knocking it they should praise the fact that there is a sport that will allow someone from a shoestore or working at burger king to make it big. Let’s face it, if you fight 10-15 fights against decent opponents and win, you will start to make money. With nothing invested but time and sweat, that’s damn good. If you can’t do that then don’t cry that the UFC hasn’t made you rich, just cry that you suck and will always suck.
