Those of you who are familiar with the pre-MMA history of Kimbo past his tagline of “Youtube streetfighter” know that the only guy to beat him was Sean Gannon, a cop from Boston who surprised Kimbo with knees and submissions en route to a KO victory. The UFC then famously brought him in at UFC55, where he lost to the amusingly named Branden Lee Hinkle, who was 12-5-1 at the time versus Gannon’s official 1-0 record.
Lots of people like to laugh that the UFC ‘picked the wrong fighter on that one‘, but anyone not in possession of a time machine would probably have made the same choice. Gannon was already training mixed martial arts as opposed to Kimbo, who was bare knuckle boxing only. He also had a pro fight under his belt. And last but not least, the dude did win the Kimbo fight. As opposed to Kimbo, who kinda sorta didn’t.
That last fact isn’t lost on Kimbo, who has said he’d “give up a testicle” to fight Gannon again. And according to ESPN, this is a fight that EliteXC is working overtime to make happen, hopefully by the end of the year. To me, I like this idea … any time a rising star wants to avenge a past lost, you’ve got enough backstory to make the fight interesting even if it turns out to be a total blowout. Plus, it sure beats another straight up tomato can fight.
