It took Kenny Florian all of one round to acclimatize himself to fighting at featherweight. Diego Nunes did a good job of dragging him into deep waters fast, pushing the pace and attacking aggressively. At the end of the first, he dropped Kenny with a left to the jaw that had everyone wondering if Featherweight Florian wasn’t a terrible idea.
But in the second, Kenny turned things around. He stopped letting Nunes dictate the pace and took control of the fight, attacking and pushing for takedowns nonstop. By the third it was Nunes that was looking gassed and tired, although maybe he was just concussed from all the patented Kenflo Elblows to the head he’d received. Every time he ended up on his back, his head was leaving giant red blotches all over the canvas.
In the third, the success Nunes had found brawling away was lost as Kenny utilized his reach to keep Diego on the outside. If Florian was having problems with his gas tank, he wasn’t showing it. He continued to dominate, using his size to bully Nunes and power him out from on top. In the dying seconds, Diego managed to get another good shot in on Kenny that wobbled him but it wasn’t even close to enough. The judges scored it 29-28, 29-28 and 30-27 Florian. And yes, once again the dissenting judge is an effing moron.
Afterward Kenny Florian petitioned pretty hard for a title shot. I guess we shouldn’t be surprised … his move down is all about belt chasing and I don’t think he wants to survive on tiny sprigs of greens for a year before getting a title fight. But I dunno. Maybe it’s because I haven’t seen enough of Nunes, or maybe it’s because I’m sick of Kenny getting fast tracked to belt fights because he’s Kenny. But I’d rather see him fight one more before getting a shot at Jose Aldo.
