Ken Shamrock SHOULD retire

Chris Ivey from MMA Opinion had this to say about Ken Shamrock:

I think its BS to say that someone “should” retire. Do any of us know Ken personally? No. His drive to continue to compete, whether it’s a good decision or not, still says something about the heart he has and the competitor he always has been. No matter who you are, Ken-hater or not, you have to have admiration for someone who still has that hunger and same tenacity in his eyes every time he enters the ring. He loves the sport and if he doesn’t want to let go, who are we to tell him.

Now normally I’m in agreement with people when they say this kind of thing. When Jake Rossen wrote his “10 people who should retire” list on Sherdog, I called him all sorts of nasty names for being some douche telling people they sucked so bad at their job they should stop forever. It just reeks of ego to pretend that anyone should pay attention to your thoughts on the subject.

On the other hand, I do think Ken Shamrock “should” retire, because after seeing the way he’s performed over the past few years it’s pretty clear to me that he’s going to get himself hurt pretty bad. To put things into perspective for you, there’s still a big question mark over whether Ken Shamrock is going to be Kimbo Slice’s next opponent. I’m sure the day after Buzz Berry knocked his block off, Ken was on the phone with Gary saying “Hey, fight’s still on, right???”

So now we’re sitting around waiting to see if Gary Shaw is evil enough to actually still book Shamrock vs Slice. While the hardcore among us who were actually aware Ken was fighting last weekend would groan and roll our eyes, I don’t doubt the majority of people who are Kimbo fans, pro wrestling fans, or regular CBS watchers have no idea what Ken’s been up to lately. The only reason Gary’s probably considering calling the fight off is he knows Ken probably wouldn’t last one minute or one punch, whichever comes first.

I don’t want to be overly dramatic here, but I honestly feel like Ken Shamrock might fucking die in the cage if he fought Kimbo Slice. While I don’t buy into the hype of Kimbo as the next big thing, he’s obviously got killer KO power in his hands. If an elbow from Tito Ortiz or a jab from Buzz Berry has Ken off to lala land, what would a power punch from Slice do to him? Fuck, even Sakuraba knocked Ken Shamrock silly.

For those of you who stuck around with the Chris Benoit story past the ‘Steroids made him crazy’ angle, you’ll know they cut his skull open and his brain poured out like rancid soup. The guy had a brain like a 90 year old Alzheimer’s patient because of constant concussions as a result of his work in the pro wrestling industry. I doubt Ken’s brain is on par, but he’s got 10 years of MMA fights and 5 years of pro wrestling under his belt. He’s now 44 freaking years old. He’s shown that he’s past having a glass jaw, he’s prone to flash KOs. Simply put, there’s something not fucking right with him.

So yeah, in this case, I do think Ken Shamrock “should” retire from MMA, before something really bad happens. And that’s coming from one of the biggest Ken nuthuggers out there.

  • godzillad says:

He has a hell of a lot more than five years of pro wrestling, he broke in way before he started even training MMA.

  • Jemaleddin says:

I don’t think quotation marks mean what you think they mean. Maybe you meant italics? Or bold? Or Both?

And yeah, he should retire. It’s only a matter of time before he gets crippled or exposed for his (let’s be honest – you saw the pics) steroid use, and that’s no way for a hall of fame fighter to go out.

My question to Chris Ivey: So if Ken still wants to fight in 20 years, will you say the same thing? How about 30? When exactly do you draw the line on too old? You have to draw it somewhere.

  • Fightlinker is Wrong says:

Yes he should retire. He looked liked death in his last fight. There is only one fight featuring Ken Shamrock that I will watch and that is Shamrock v. Tank.

    Chris Ivey is Wrong.

  • Captain says:

Ken should retire, unless he’s only going to fight old geezers like himself who can’t hit very hard anymore.

Can we start campaigning for Kimbo vs Bob Sapp? Forget legit competition for now and let’s embrace the freakshow.

  • I think he just needs to get himself a better manager. One that isn’t stupid enough to book him against people who are primarily strikers, like Berry.

Then again, if he keeps geting booked in fights like that we won’t be talking about whether or not he should retire. He’ll have to retire because he’s gonna get himself hurt.

  • Jemaleddin says:

Screw Bob Sapp – let’s have him take on Hong-Man Choi! That way he can be the legitimate number 2 heavyweight having beaten the previous top contender, right? Right?

Oh wait, no – Fedor’s top spot is a sham… I keep forgetting.

  • Captain says:

HMC won’t get sanctioned until he gets rid of his tumor like Antonio Silva did. Stupid athletic commissions. Always telling people what to do.

  • Jemaleddin says:

@Captain: Good point! That’s it – let’s all move to Japan! They’d sanction a fight between Kimbo and a polar bear.

  • Random Acts Of Kindness says:

He needs to retire from MMA, but not necessarily from the public spotlight. There’s plenty of networks that are recruiting wash-ups for their celebrity hot dog eat contests and celebrity rehab type TV shows. Or how about Dancing With the Stars? Or maybe he can pick up some prestigious B or C grade film roles like Randy Couture and call himself an actor?

  • Lifer says:

Maybe he should just go back to coaching like on TUF3? We saw him instill some hearty work ethic in his team and establish solid gameplans that were executed flawlessly using coded phrases like :

“This is your world! It’s all yours!”
“OH, he’s scared! He’s scared! He doesn’t want none of that!”
    “Yeah, keep doing that!”

  • Shamrock vs. Jake O’Brien is my choice. I don’t think O’Brien knows how to do anything aside from takedowns and side position maneuver exercises.
