I’m sure you’ve all heard the news that Kimbo Slice will be on hand in Japan this weekend at K1’s World GP finals. The big rumor going around is that he’ll be signing with the kickboxing organization and fighting Badr Hari, which has disaster written all over it if you ask me. Still, the funny thing about Japan is they’re perfectly happy to see an overpaid freakshow fighter lose again and again and again. So maybe this is a perfect fit? As for Kimbo’s ProElite contract, I have a feeling it’s MMA specific since there was always talk from Gary Shaw about having him box as well.
Personally, what I’m more interested in is the K1 Grand Prix itself … I haven’t been this excited for a kickboxing event since 2005’s Grand Prix. Here’s how this thing works: it’s a three round tournament over one night, and this year it’s got Jerome LeBanner, Peter Aerts, Badr Hari, and Remy Bojansky. On top of that, the reserve fights include Hong Man Choi, Melvin Manhoef, and Ray Sefo (hot off his ‘win’ at UFC 91).
I’ll be up at 3AM tonight to watch this live. Those of you who I’ve already told to watch the 3AM Strikeforce show with Cung, don’t worry … it’ll be like 30 minutes before the first K1 fight happens anyways so you won’t miss anything. So hopefully we’ll have some peeps around for the chat + posts. It’s being aired on HDNet, and will most def. be pirated and available via stream somewhere or other.
