Jamie Varner tricks Razor Rob out of a win

There’s a decent amount of controversy and complaining coming out of last night’s WEC show regarding the Jamie Varner vs Rob McCullough fight. About a minute into the third round, McCullough landed a brutal shot to Varner’s jaw that popped Varner’s mouthpiece out. Razor Rob pushed the pace and tried to finish Varner while he was injured, but when Varner slipped out of range for a second he called a time out to get his mouthguard.

Yes, you read that right. Varner did the time out signal with his hands, and McCullough stepped back and let him get his mouthguard. This gave Varner enough time to sort his marbles out, and he went on to win the fight.

Most people are concentrating on how what Varner did was against the rules and cheap and blah blah blah. I’m not 100% sure if this was technically against the rules (the closest I can see it coming to is #29 – timidity), and I’m not gonna deny it was pretty cheap. But it was also fucking smart on Varner’s part, and for all you McCullough fans: It’s your boy’s fault he stepped back and actually fell for it.

  • Atom says:

I’m not sure how you can blame Rob, since Mazagatti stopped the fight to wash out the mouth piece. What was he supposed to do, sucker punch Varner while both he and the ref were turned around

  • Atom says:

The funniest part by far was Mazagatti saying, “Don’t let it happen again!” , like Varner had just decided to spit it out.
    You tell ’em Steve!
That mouthpiece got KTFO, as the replay clearly showed.

  • dignan says:

The time out was a beauty, but I would’ve preferred the:

“Restart, Restart…no seriously, let’s restart from the beginning, I wasn’t ready.”

  • drewdoodoo says:

With Big John gone, Herb Dean has had to step up to try and fill his shoes. This left a void in the position of Most Controversal Ref, that Mazagatti must now fill. First the “oops I stopped the Mir/Brock fight when I shouldn’t have, so I better take a point or something”, and now this. He did try to make it up to Razor by letting him get knocked out two or three times before stopping the fight. Herb has taught him well.

  • yenny says:

I thought that was super bizzare too. Just when Rob was turning the tide… Time out.

Be a man, be like Jeremy Horn recently against Nate Marquardt. Just pick it up on your own and stuff it in your mouth, all while Nate’s attacking him.

  • Audacity says:

After countless fights in karate, I can tell you that the one thing you do not want to be without is a mouthguard. There was a time when we didn’t use gloves or shinguards during sparring, but we still used a mouthguard. I’m all for keeping the action going, but getting punched in the jaw without a mouthpiece and biting off your tongue is kinda going against the safety regulations. If the mouthpiece had come out a second time, I would have called bullshit.

  • drewdoodoo says:

Yes, but the ref decides when it gets put back in, not the fighter.

  • Captain says:

Rob’s reaction when Varner called timeout was kind of like, “oh… timeout… cool… hum dee ho… wait what!” But by the time he got to the “wait what!” and started to go after Varner Maserati had already decided to back up the timeout and jumped in the middle.

If I was Varner I would have done the same thing. That prick.

  • Accomando says:

Great idea on Varner’s part. Razor Rob had disengaged for a second and was backing off, perfectly legal jackal-style move.

  • Dangerfield says:

I did it in a street fight once. Dropped my cell. Truth

  • demonianray says:

It was actually bizarre watching his time out gesture, like for a second. But i completey understand that he decided to get the mouthpiece, of course he could have done it without calling the timeout, but i dont think it was against the rules. And yes, the ref was supposed to halt the action to put back Varner’s mouth piece from where it came, but i personally think Rob wouldnt have done anything with that punch, last night Varner had his number.

  • There was a good 3-4 seconds before Mazagatti actually swung in to stop the fight … Rob let Varner back off and then didn’t pursue. There’s a good chance he might not have persued even without the ‘time out’ … he was acting super cautious because he was so afraid of getting taken down I think.

  • john says:

Random fact: Mazzagatti means cat killer in Italian

  • Mike_N says:

If Mazzagatti had stopped the fight during a crazy flurry where McCullough was just pounding Varner, then Rob’s fans might have a legit beef. Rob hit Varner with a pretty good shot but didn’t really follow it up with anything, and pretty much spent the whole fight passively sitting back while Varner punched him in the face, for that matter. Yeah, I’ll agree that Rob was starting to at least show SOME kind of aggression, but that one punch does not a fight make.

  • Accomando says:

    13, it’s close enough.

  • Dukes says:

As soon as Varner pulled away and Ron was not pursuing or in striking distance, he should have stopped the fight and gotten the mouth guard. For Varner, he initiated this first, unfortunately. The rules ALWAYS favor the safety of the fighters, and “Porn Stache” should have pounced when they separated.

If the punch that knocked out the mouthpiece didn’t KO Varner, what makes you think some wild “follow up” punch from 15 feet away was going to do it.

Face it: Razor Rob took Varner lightly and gave him NO respect. As a result, he got KO’ed three times in the same fight, brutally, I might add.

  • Popetastic says:

Varner was gonna win that fight, regardless. Razor Rob looked terrible. He must have spent his entire camp training to defend the takedown. He ended up getting schooled at his own game. Props to Varner.

  • Márcio says:

Varner was smart and McCullough was dumb. I still think Varner would’ve won any way… but now we’ll never know.

  • Well, the WEC loves to give rematches to douches who don’t really deserve one, so maybe we will!

  • shanaconda says:

reminded me of Joslin-Fitch, only Varner had a semi-legit reason. Also Joslin is Canadian and has a genetic politeness which explains why he didn’t jump in Trigg on Hughes style at the first sign of weakness. Dull Razor needs to walk down the street and swill a few beers with Tank to get his ‘edge’ back.

  • ilostmydog says:

Dukes is correct. The fighters were a good distance apart (unless Razor Rob is actually Dhalsim he would not have been able to hit him), and Varner had recovered enough that he was no longer in danger. If Mazzagetti had been on top of things and doing his job, he would have remembered that Varner’s mouthpiece got punted out and could have called time himself. Unfortunately, Mazz sucks and Varner had to do his job for him.

  • Sebastian says:

bottom line is razor rob got pummeled by Varner, it would have happened if he would have called T.O. or not. Rob was looking horrible in the first 2 rounds taking shot after shot from Varner. Lets give credit where credit is due and the worm deserves to be the new champ. now we will see what razor rob is really made of when he gets the re-match, which I hope he does.

  • Hattori Hanzo says:

Yeah it was almost like Rob didn’t expect to get punched in the face. Woah this guy is hitting me, doesn’t he know I’m Razor Rob.
