While Yushin Okami might currently be next in line for Anderson Silva, we all know it’s one whim from Dana away from going to anyone else. Mike Chia Pet thinks the most likely guy to usurp Okami’s spot is none other than the last guy who was supposed to be the next guy: Chael Sonnen.
Yes, he’s facing a possible suspension after a pre-fight drug test showed elevated levels of testosterone in his sytem. His hearing will take place in December. By that time, he’ll already have served four months of any suspension. If the California state athletic commission reduces the penalty to between 6-9 months — a possibility, though no sure thing — Sonnen could be ready to fight again by May or June.
With the Anderson Silva vs. Vitor Belfort fight set for February, that timeline would fit perfectly for the winner to get a 3-4 month break before a fight with Sonnen.
While no one knows what the fuck is going on with Chael, the fact that he straight up listed testosterone on his pre-fight medical forms means there’s a chance he might have some sort of reasonable medical excuse ready to go. In the past, the CSAC has cut steroid suspensions in half for reasons ranging from ‘Sean Sherk seems like a nice lad’ to ‘James Toney told us to go fuck ourselves.’ I dunno if that’s how shit will roll now that the commish is under new management, but it’s worth noting that it’s still a lot of the same dunderheads filling the seats on these kind of panels.
So I give Chael a 50/50 right now on getting his suspension shortened. Now the only question is whether the UFC would be okay giving a guy coming off a roid suspension an immediate title rematch.
