How the fuck did Tank get paid so much?

The guys at the Fightling Life point out something no one else has: that EliteXC was absolutely nuts when they ageed to pay Tank Abbott 126k to fight Kimbo Slice. They present these two scenarios as the only likely explanations:

1) Elite XC offers Tank $40,000 to fight Kimbo. Tank, being the shrewd businessman that we all know he is, comes back with a counter offer of one thousand more than whatever Kimbo is making. Elite XC accepts without double-checking the amount that they’ve already agreed to give Kimbo. Tank nearly dies of a heart attack when he finds out how much he’s actually making.

2) Elite XC offers Tank $40,000. He asks for more than three times that amount. The Elite XC representatives stare back at him in stunned silence. Tank produces photos of Elite XC president Gary Shaw engaged in a grotesque sexual act with two underage girls, a gay male stripper dressed as Superman, and a heavily sedated tiger. The Elite XC representatives open their check book and ask how many t’s there are in Abbott.

Of course, the simple answer is this: You always pay more for custom-fit. Tank Abbott was a custom-fit opponent for Kimbo Slice … not only was there only a very small chance Tank would win, but EliteXC would be making an important statement when Kimbo trounced Tank: Hail to the new King of Brawl. There’s really no one else out there who fit the bill as perfectly as Abbott, who also came into this fight with several month’s extra promotion on account of the CFFC event. And he knew that.

So while I still think EliteXC should have been able to figure out a way to lessen the raping on Tank’s check, I’m giving Tank credit for sticking to his guns and managing to extort an awesome (hopefully) final payday.

I wonder what fighters make after taxes.

I mean, does $126,000 pay mean he only really gets around $70k – 80k?

  • danaunclefesterwhite says:

It does seem like Tank was grossly overpaid. But for the record, Tank Abbott made $150,000 to show and would have made $25,000 more to win in UFC 43. Good god, Tank must be one hell of a swindler or something. How is he able to get that much coin when he probably was never really a draw to begin with? Maybe it’s because of his time in WCW after his early stint in the UFC. But still, Tank never put enough asses in seats to justify that much pay.

  • dignan says:

    Good call. Good for Tank.

  • FRANKIE says:

Saying that Tank was never a draw is utterly retarded.

  • Tank, Royce, and Ken are like the holy trinity of oldschool fighters.

  • danaunclefesterwhite says:

Being a draw back in the SEG days doesn’t justify a six figure salary. Not that I care. I’m not a shareholder in ProElite. But if I was a promoter, no way I would pay him $126,000 now or in 2003-2004 when he returned to the UFC. Tank is lucky to be paid what he does.

  • Vale Nada says:

Even more reason for folks to leave the UFC….Talk some wild shit, become a spectacle, and head over to elite for some serious dough.

  • danaunclefesterwhite says:

I’m all for spectacles as a fan. But stateside, this kind of promotion can only go so far before people start seeing MMA as a joke rather than a real sport.

In order for this sport to hit the mainstream, you need to find the right balance. Boring fighters who want to jab and hug against the fence or lay n pray are not going to make the sport mainstream, whether they win or lose. These fighters repel fans. But at the same time you don’t want to bring in freak shows, even if they put asses in seats, because these guys are going to make it difficult for the mainstream to take your sport seriously. And if you want to compete with the big sports, you have to be taken seriously as a sports promotion.

  • Zane says:

FL, did he sign on for one fight or was it more? I hope to hell that was the last time we have to see him, he was never that good but back then he could give and take one hell of a beating, now he justs takes. How about this James Thompson Vs. Tank Abbott!!!!

“Being a draw back in the SEG days doesn’t justify a six figure salary”

    Tell that to Royce Gracie

  • anybody seen the cage-cam of that fight?

makes u feel ur in the cage with them

too bad the cam is a bit broken

  • danaunclefesterwhite says:

    “Tell that to Royce Gracie”
Zuffa had to pay Royce Gracie $400,000 for his reunion match in the UFC because he commands top coin to fight in Japan. The Gracies are over-rated as hell and cocky but they have a strong reputation and are among the top pioneers of MMA. Even if they only intended the UFC to be a Gracie Jiu-Jitsu infomercial pitting Royce against a bunch of tomato cans aside from a few real competitors (Shamrock, Severn).
