Has the fate of Strikeforce been decided?

While it seems quite obvious at this point that the UFC is stripping Strikeforce for parts, the promotion’s fate technically lies in the hands of the Showtime network, who are going to make a choice very soon on extending the deal all the way until 2013. How soon is very soon? They may have already made their decision:

It appears that day is drawing closer with every passing month. Strikeforce broadcast partner Showtime’s deadline to continue with a five-year broadcast deal inked in February 2009 is “now,” according to White, and the future of the promotion likely rests on that decision.

White said UFC executive and co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta met with Showtime executives on Tuesday but said he didn’t know how the meeting went and declined to discuss it further.

“I’m not involved with that thing,” White said. “I have a conference call with Lorenzo right after this press conference, so I’ll know then.”

Call me a Debbie Downer, but I’m not exactly optimistic about Strikeforce’s chances. Maybe it’s the roster raiding, maybe it’s the complete lack of promotion for Strikeforce events, or maybe Dana White’s complete indifference. But something tells me the UFC isn’t all that interested in keeping the organization around.

I can’t blame Zuffa for pulling the names out of Strikeforce at this point. It’s not fair to the fighters to have to sit on the shelf while the TV execs make up their minds.

At this moment there are zero Strikeforce events planned for 2012. Strikeforce should be booking for Jan-April 2012 (Fighters, and venue’s) right now.

If Showtime had been smart they would have signed BEFORE the fox deal was announced, or as soon as they heard that Strikeforce would be up for sale. Now they are negotiating from a weakened position, and Lorenzo can walk away at any time.

Zuffa has no problem throwing together 4 or 5 fight night cards to give the owed fights to guys under contract.

I never cared about Strikefarce but it’s kinda sad to see them go. Good thing Rebney has been quietly setting himself up to be a legit B league for actual fans of MMA (not you, Ryan).

The word on the street out here in Vegas (unnamed sources mind you) is Dana wants to crush Strkeforce between his blackjack-playing fingers. Lorenzo sees a use for keeping it alive. Will it be good cop or bad cop? Tune in next week.
