One of the inadvertent side effects of the WEC merging into the UFC is there’s going to be a period of time over the next 6-9 months where there are too many fighters and not enough cards. And how does Zuffa deal with these situations? Why, by cutting loose a lot of the fat at the middle that’s going nowhere fast.
Patrick Cote already got the axe after Tom Lawlor rolled him around the octagon for 15 minutes. And according to Gabriel Gonzaga’s twitter, his anemic performance against Brendan Schaub might be the last of his career:
Official now – Out of UFC – Thanks for all your support – back to normal life and BJJ forever
Of course the irony here is if he’d brought some of that ‘BJJ forever’ spirit into his fight with Schaub, we probably wouldn’t be sitting here today wondering if Napao’s fighting career is over. But I suppose it was only a matter of time … Gonzaga was one of the last hang-ons from the days when the UFC’s heavyweight division comprised of dudes like Justin McCully and Jake O’Brien. Past that knockout of Crocop, he’s never been able to beat anyone other than fat bag of shit heavyweights. I’m kinda sad he never got to have a gatekeeper faceoff against Cheick Kongo, but past that it wasn’t like he was gonna make a run at a title any time soon.
