Bad news for Strikeforce’s upcoming June 18th card and for women’s MMA in general: the return of Gina Carano is going to be delayed for an unspecified amount of time due to some sort of mystery medical issue. Today’s press conference revealed that Carano’s doctor wouldn’t medically clear her to fight. No extra information was provided, leaving everyone scratching their heads wondering what’s wrong.
Of course, the joke / guess everyone is making is that Gina might be preggers. It wouldn’t be the first time something like that happened in WMMA – Carano’s original opponent for the event was going to be Cindy Dandois until Cindy came down with a uterus parasite of her own. There are various other women’s plumbing issues that could have caused problems too – Erin Toughill once had to pull out of a fight because of a ruptured ovary suffered in training.
This is all just random speculation though … who knows what the hell the problem really is other than Carano and her doctor? Was Strikeforce even filled in? Based on the secrecy behind the issue, everyone is kinda assuming it must be something embarrassing and therefore potentially related to her delicate woman bits. After all, in what other circumstances would a professional athlete not have to reveal the nature of an issue that’s taken them out of their big comeback fight?
Then again, maybe it’s a completely normal injury and this is just how Gina rolls. Considering she’s been a virtual ghost since August 2009, it wouldn’t be surprising if she just refuses to share anything she considers personal with anyone regardless of how mundane it may be. All I know is that by not announcing what the issue is, she’s basically put it front and center in people’s minds, and they’ll just keep on speculating until the truth eventually comes out.
