Fucking pathetic.

Y’all know I love women’s MMA, but what … the … fuck?

The weigh-ins did not complete without a hitch however, as Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos registered a weight of 152 pounds, well over the California State Athletic Commission six-pound rule, which does not allow more than a six pound disparity in any division except for heavyweight.

Santos has until 8 p.m. PST to hit 149.5 pounds, which would place her at the maximum weight allowed. Her opponent, Hitomi Akano, exited the scale at 143.5. If Santos makes weight and the fight, she will be fined 20% of her fight purse, with half of the deduction going to the CSAC, and the remaining 10% to Akano.

I honestly don’t know what this is all about … if Gina and Cyborg are both just pathetically undisciplined when it comes to weight cutting or maybe they’re trying to emulate the kind of heavy cuts guys are capable of. Whatever the case, this is fucking retarded.

Fighting is a job, and a fighter only needs to do two things to get paid: show up on weight and get into the goddamn cage. Every time a fighter shows up over weight, it drives me nuts. One pound or so denotes that at least the fighter tried to hit weight – and not in that bullshit “ride a bike / sit in the sauna” way, but the correct “We understand two months out that we need to be at this weight and we’ve got a scientific plan to make it” way.

Cyborg’s people say that she’ll be able to make it to 149.5, but holy shit. When your goal is 4.5 pounds over what you’re supposed to be fighting at, it’s embarrassing. And not just for Cyborg. Now we have the two biggest names in female MMA blowing their weight by a fucking mile. A FUCKING MILE. How are women supposed to be taken seriously in fighting when Gina and Cris keep clown shoeing the weigh-ins?

Adding to the bullshit is the fact that Cyborg’s opponent was already way smaller before this situation came up. Hitomi Akano typically fights at 135 and isn’t even known as a ‘big’ 135. Now she’s going to be facing someone who probably weighs the same as Sean Sherk on fight night.

I’ve put up with female weight class bullshit in the past because there’s basically one class everyone ends up fighting in and it’s the class that Gina and Cyborg fit into. But at this point it’s now beyond bending the rules to accommodate the stars and has wandered into parody status. Well, it’d be parody if it were funny. But as it stands I don’t see what’s so humorous about a gigantic Cyborg beating the shit out of way smaller opponents.
