When Drew Fickett got banned from the ADCCs two years ago for random drunken insanity, we all had a good laugh and cheered him on for his sheer rascality. Then he washed out of the UFC, but hey ... that happens to a lot of guys so no big deal. Then there was the huge unprofessional kerfuffle between Drew, Strikeforce, and MFC. And then he burned his bridges with EliteXC. Hey, what do you expect from a heavy drinking fun loving guy who belongs to a band named Cock Sandwich!

But it was around this point that all of Drew's 'adventures' started seeming more like misfortunes. He kept on adding more and more losses to his record. Before 2008 he was 32-5. From 2008 onwards he was 3-7, with the biggest name on that list being Jesse Taylor, who starched him in 1:42.

An apparent internet meltdown at the end of the year was when I officially stopped poking fun at Drew and started feeling generally concerned for him. And this weekend he justified that concern by showing up for his fight against Shannon "The Cannon" Ritch drunk. Yes, really. Here's Ritch talking about the situation on the Underground:
Its True...
I showed up to fight, made weight- and waited for Drew.
Drew finally showed up, saw him with the DR. Pre fight physcial and YEP- he was a little waisted. Police were out front they gave Drew a breath- a- lizer- I believe I heard them say he blew a .18 (2X the legal limit.)
Its just Sad, I am a huge Drew Fickett fan, he is a great fighter, but obvisiously has a problem. He is in a dark time in his life. I hope he gets it together.

All I can say about RITC- Rage In The Cage is- They did the right thing, They paid me in full and even tried to get another fighter to replace Drew, no lUCk. JPET and ROLAND did all they could to get the fight to happen, even going as far as giving DREW time to sober up,
To no avail...he was just really DRUNK.?

My hat is off to RITC- They actually treated me with the ut most respect and My sponsers that came and bought 25 ringside 50.00 dollars seats, Roland said he would make it up to them on another show. I hope RITC will give me another opportunity to fight. Im sad for the fans that bought tickets- I had over 100 people there from my home town to watch me fight, Maybe next time.

I hope Drew gets his life back on track!
Shannon "The Cannon"

What else is there to say? It's been pretty obvious for a while that Drew has a drinking problem and at this point he's gone from functional addict to full blown alcoholic. Here's hoping he pulls an Evan Tanner and gets his shit together. Obviously without the whole dying at the end part, you jerks.

visited the underground for the first time today reading that, cool site

but yeah, this guy needs serious professional help, its stories like this that keep me away from the sauce

that and me not having a cast iron stomach or mouth for that matter
Reverend Clint
im sad to hear about Drew and his issues... could be on the road to another premature MMA death

That said it's nice to hear that a promoter treated Ritch so nicely after Drew fucked him over.
MikeO
dont you fucking get it? fighting drunk is his style and he was denied the right to practice his art. thats how he trains, so thats how he fights. fucking PC faggots.
steve4192
Drew was obviously inspired by Jackie Chan as the Drunken Master.
Shawn
i like partying as much, if not more, than the next guy. despite that, when you go from being a highly regarded member of your profession to the absolute bottom of the barrel over a relatively short period of time, it's time to put the bottle down.

booze can make for a great time, but when you're sacrificing your career, health, and self-respect for that great time, as fickett is, it's time to re-evaluate your situation and make some changes.

Next time on Intervention.

My name is Drew. D R E W.

Shawn you act like the guy just started drinking. To compare your "struggle" to his is retarded, the dude is a straight up alcoholic. Its easy as shit to say, put down the bottle and do what you do, but such is alcoholism. I don't even care if the dude fights again I just hope he can function someday, you can't get fucked up and be a cashier at Wal-Mart, let alone fight
Shawn
i think you misinterpreted what i meant. i was just pointing out the obvious fact that drinking a bunch of beers can be a great time, but when you start crossing over into full-blown alcoholism it's time to stop the party. point is, this is drew fickett's bottom and he needs to do something about it before it's too late.
Rob Kwan Doe
Damn thats some sad shit. I figured this was gonna happen eventually but I thought it'd be a lot funnier when it happened.
godzillad
Sorry to hear that he's got all those issues.

With stuff like this and worse happening to millions of less-prolific people and the new survey saying alcohol-related deaths are becoming an epidemic ([Link]), I think a reinstatement of prohibition needs to be looked at.
Blackula Jonez
as someone who rarely touches booze i think thats a bad idea, granted drunk driving accidents would take a dive but if the law had a problem with speakeasies and people running moonshine back in the 20's and 30's wtf do you think would happen in the hyper connected modern world
dulljake
prohibition doesn't work. There are always people that abuse drugs, legal or not. You're free to fuck yourself over if you want too!
aika
Prohibition does nothing but increase the crime rate as the demand never shrinks, while the supply does. Same with pot. Make that shit legal already.
Shawn
i second that. the violence and crime associated with the black market far outweigh any problems caused by the drug itself. aws for booze, prohibition is a ridiculous idea. insane actually. people have drank for literally thousands of years. there is a small percentage of us that cant handle it. at the same time, there exists a large percentage of us who abuse fast food and die of heart failure or obesity. should we outlaw taco bell?
aaronb
Well said Shawn. If only they had some sort of program out there for people who struggle with addiction? Maybe some sort of anonymous group setting where people could share their stories, and drink coffee.
godzillad
"the violence and crime associated with the black market far outweigh any problems caused by the drug itself."

That's a generic argument that can be used for anything.
Shawn
aaronb: AA and rehab is for pussys. real men go cold turkey and deal with the withdrawal symptoms locked up in a dark room all alone.

godzillad: no, it's not. iv studied this shit extensively. remember, we're just talking about weed here.

weed is in no way physically addictive, although there are obviously individuals who mentally rely on it. you can not overdose on weed. you do not become violent from smoking weed. sure, maybe you forget a couple small things here and there, but its usually shit that was unimportant in the first place. weed makes movies, video games, food, sex, roller coasters, music, and basically anything you can think of better, without any serious side effects. even if you do consider the lack of motivation and potential lung damage extremely harmful, its no more harmful than a plethora of items you can buy over the counter. dont even get me started on prescritption pills.

in terms of the black market problems, we have a bigger percentage of our population locked in prison than any other country in the world (i think). a large chunk of those individuals are in for possessory crimes, with marijuana being one of the most common. the fact is that when you make something illegal, people are not going to stop using it, which means they are going to need a way to enforce the rules of their now black market industry because the legal system is not an alternative. what this means is that people will need to protect themselves using violence. this is why there is so much gang violence involved with the drug trade. certain drugs are so inherently harmful that we as a society deem the costs necessary in order to keep them illegal. weed can not fall into this category for the reasons i have already mentioned.
Reverend Clint
where i used to live in the backwoods part of humboldt county, ca we grew lots of pot, like millions of dollars each person, but now cartels and huge drug conglomerates rule. They literally kill people who accidentally stumble down their roads or try to do shady business with them.
aika
Yeah bro, the cartels ain't no joke. If we legalize to some extent we can eliminate the criminal element. I like to drink alcohol from time to time, if it was not legal, would I keep doing it? Of course. Same with smoke. It's my body and I know the risks and choose to take them. Legislating morality is never a good idea in my books.
dulljake
I read a book that fundamentally changed the way i feel about prohibition called "The Great Drug War". Back in the old day I was a staunch prohibitionist. I felt very strongly that drug led to some kind of moral and mental decay, and that every problem could be traced to some sort of addiction.

Later i realized that the only reason I felt that way was because it was simply a way for me to justify my irrational fear of drugs. I was a product of the anti-drug propaganda. I think the institutions that made me so fearful of drugs had good intentions, but it really doesn't allow adults to talk rationally about the role drugs play in our lives. Fucking Aspirin is a drug, but no one flips out when you take one.

The key is really to allow people the benefit of choice. turns out that when a drug loses it's appeal as a way of rebelling against society, fewer people consume it. I guess at the end of the day we all just want to piss off the man...
