Sam Caplan returns from working with WAMMA, M-1 Global, and Showtime to break this interesting story on a pretty huge shift in the UFC's sponsorship model:
Five Ounces of Pain was able to obtain an e-mail distributed by the UFC's legal department that now lists Dethrone, One More Round, and Rolling Stone as a list of sponsors that will not be approved for UFC 100 on July 11. Unacceptable sponsors for UFC 100 also online Poker sponsors Full Tilt Poker, Ultimate Bet, and Party Poker.
Clothing sponsors that are approved for UFC 100 include Cage Fighter, MMA Authentic, Familia Gladitoria and MMA Elite. The source added that several clothing sponsors have indicated that they were contacted recently by the UFC and informed that in order to have the ability to sponsor a UFC fighter during a UFC-promoted event that they would have to pay a $100,000 fee to the UFC for the right to sponsor a fighter.
FiveOuncesOfPain.com contacted several other managers and agents who represent UFC fighters and they reaffirmed every detail brought forth by the original source.
I suppose this is the start of that stuff MMA Junkie was talking about a while back. Everyone over at FightOpinion is flipping the fuck out. Personally, I think it's too early to jump onto the "UFC is fucking over fighters" bandwagon when there's a good chance fighters will now be coming out with a single well-paying Ford sponsorship (if Ford still exists, I haven't been paying attention) rather than a giant spew of condom wholesalers and used car dealerships from Stockton.
Dana White is kinda like the Stalin of MMA: you can tell he's got this awesome vision of the future but it's gotta be HIS future and if he has to kill a few million people to achieve it, well then that's okay by him. Stalin's whole gig didn't exactly work out too well for anyone but Stalin, but that's just a metaphor and it's hard to know right now if fighters will benefit from this change or suffer. Mainly because the UFC is all about signing fighters for pennies and dealing out sponsorships, bonus money, and occasional "Just because we love you" checks based on how much they like you at the time. It might be a pretty sweet deal for those in Dana White's favor, but it doesn't lead to a whole lot of financial security for anyone.
What a crock of shit. UFC telling sponsors they have to pay them to sponsor a fighter... that sounds like they are taking money straight out the fighters pockets to me.
Yeah maybe some of the money the sponsor pays to the UFC goes towards promo, event lease fees, event security and fighter pay...
But seems to me that this type of negotiations is only going to alienate the UFC fighters later on down the road. No one is going to want to touch them, because they wont be able to affort to.
I like the TapouT line and all... but a they cant be the only UFC sponsor for every fighter... that would suck. Kind of like eating bread and water for every meal every day for the rest of your life.....
Let's not knock Chase Chevrolet; it's one of the biggest car dealerships in northern Cali (real north, not forest north). Lots of other dealerships get their cars from there, too.
Correct me if I am wrong or not completely understanding this article. But what I read tells me the UFC wants the sponsor to pony up money so that they will get permission to give the fighter monetary support for wearing their product?
Anyhow regardless... Its GHEY!!
The fighters could gain more credibility if condom depot and lumber liquidators aren't plastered on their ass and crotch.
Long gone are the days of girls gone wild ads every commercial break and I'm glad for it.
Progress people, hopefully this will eliminate retarded sponsors. Sorry Fightlinker, your UFC fighter sponsorship pipe dream is over.
I vote that all fighters come out with murals of Dana White himself on their shorts and T-Shirts. Maybe get rid of the Harley logo at center octogon and put Dana's UFC 100 Magazine cover right there.
Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.
Someone's gotta flip the fuck out. It's a concerning development for sure ... I just think it's worth waiting to hear a few more details from the UFC's side of things. Of course the managers are gonna be concerned ... they make a lot of money for themselves off sponsorship deals.
funny.. wasnt MMA Authentic the company that screwed the UFC out of the Walmart deal? i guess Dana doesnt care anymore if hes got their moneys falling from his pockets
Add SPRAWL, TOE @ TOE to the list! Bottom line, they are taking money from the fighters which they promised not to do if they signed the THQ agreement. You will see big names jump ship after this one!
