It's day two of as the Mirko turns and things have just taken an interesting turn. On Sunday, Kevin Iole reported that Mirko Crocop had told Dana White that he was leaving for DREAM, and the article was complete with several quotes from El Baldo Presidente himself implying Mirko was a dirty dishonorable bullshitting fucker.
“I don't know why White listened to the rumors instead of talking to me. I hoped that we will talk about a continuing of our collaboration, because the only obstacle was the long period between two fights that has been offered to me. I don't want to sit at home so long and waiting that someone calls me for a fight.”
“However, I am grateful to Dana White for an opportunity to fight in Cologne and despite his harsh words, I don't see the reason that we don't prolong the contract.”
All of a sudden things get less clear. Who told Dana White that Crocop had signed with DREAM if it wasn't Crocop? Was it this NikkanSports article from Japan that set him off? Did Dana just jumping the gun because he felt like the Mirko deal was turning sour? Or is Crocop just setting up ambiguity now to avoid looking like the bad guy? Why does this whole situation feel like a cross between a soap opera and a spy show?
*UPDATE*USA Today confirmed via email with DREAM's US rep Mike Kogan that Crocop has in fact signed with the Japanese promotion. That sounds pretty definite ... unless Kogan continues Japan's fine tradition of hiring fucking morons to run things stateside. I'm going to try and wait until tomorrow before I make any more Crocop updates just so we can see what's up when the dust settles.
There was probably some miscommunication and DW jumped the gun like you said. That dude is overworked/overstressed so its understandable that when things don't seem to be going 100% flawlessly he can fly off the handle.
CC doesn't seem like the one to say all this crap to his employer and fans and then totally do a 180 and go the other way. It's a good way to burn two major bridges (with the UFC and the majority of his N.American fan base). That right there is not good business sense.
If anything I think maybe DW misinterpreted the meaning of a "verbal 3 fight contract" in the sense that he was under the impression it was a done deal and he would not have to out-bid DREAM. If that was the case, that's just stupid on DW's part.
I don't care about this one way or another. Guys who "win" fights based on stabbing their opponents in the eye and then act like it had nothing to do with them winning immediately after their opponent falls down clutching their eye are not guys I really give a shit about the contracts of.
^^ yeah but in all fairness the onus of that shitstorm was on Dan Mirgliaotta, for not at all recognizing that a fighter grimacing, putting his hands over his face, and turning his back on his opponent might have gotten poked in the eye(s), and not CC, who was riled up on testosterone and possibly, the desperation to win inside the octagon.
Eh, Crocop was right ... the outcome would have been the same. People should be more upset about him ducking harder opponents than for the eyepoke which was accidental.
CC did actually apologize on the spot when it was mentioned in the post fight interview. he has no history of eye poking or winning in cheap ways. you should cut him some slack DJ, at least for the eye poke. all he said after that was that it wouldn't have changed the overall outcome of the fight, which is 100% true.
all he said after that was that it wouldn't have changed the overall outcome of the fight, which is 100% true.
'CroCop is now 100% guaranteed to win? Everyone deserves their chance and Al-Turk (of who I am neither a big fan nor an affiliate) didn't get his.
He actually said "That's not a thing that makes a difference in the fight."
He stabbed Al-Turk, Al-Turk covers up and gets punched from behind with uppercuts following several whiffed shots. That's it. He got up fine following the first flurry from Mirko.
