The fight for Chuck Liddell's future continues, with everyone under the sun butting in to tell the world what THEY think Chuck should do with his future (other than continue to bang endless lines of top notch vagoo). All this of course is because Dana White put his foot down and said his friend was done. Everyone else that wants Chuck to keep going? Crazy enough, they think it should be Liddell's choice to make for some reason:
Hackleman says he's not trying to get Chuck to keep fighting, he just feels that it should be Chuck's choice.

“He's turning 40, but he's a strong 40,” countered John Hackleman, Liddell's trainer since the start of his career. “I'll be with him whatever he decides to do. If I felt there was even a chance of disability or a brain injury, I wouldn't want him to fight.”

Hackleman says does not necessarily think Liddell should fight again, and though he is angry at White, he does think White's intentions as they pertain to Liddell are honest. Hackleman said that when he, Howard Davis and Sammy Henson trained Liddell for the Rua fight, Liddell's boxing was sharp and his conditioning was excellent.

“Howard Davis and Sammy Henson aren't yes men,” said Hackleman.

It's worth noting that Howard Davis did mention after the Shogun fight that all the bad habits he trained out of Liddell in practice magically re-appeared a few minutes into the fight.

Still, the funny thing about this whole situation is I think everyone just has Chuck's best interests in mind, which is why it's so dumb that everyone is arguing over him. On the eve of ESPN's E:60 piece which will ask "Is Dana White too psycho to take the UFC mainstream?", it's worth noting that this public pissing contest over Chuck's future is just another situation which could have been completely avoided if a certain bald headed UFC exec had showed just a smidge of tact and forced the Iceman to retire privately.

Dana White is an assclown. If he really is friends with Chuck why would he humiliate him by treating him like a five year old? Chuck should go to strikeforce and make gobs of money and retire when he feels like he has had enough. Really.

Legally, Dana can not use Chuck's contract with the ufc to force Chuck to "retire". There have been many attempts by employers to use restrictive covenants to prevent ex-employees from competing with them. And the law is very clear that people have the right to work. If Chuck wants to fight and Dana won't give him any fights, Chuck could have any contract Dana is relying on invalidated.

Chuck might have to go to court but I'm pretty confident that would be the outcome.

Imagine if the fightlinker contract provided that if Ryan ever left fight linker, he could never blog again about mma!

I don't see anything wrong with either of their arguments. Dana White is the best owner/promoter for the fans of any national sport there is. Do people really have a problem with Dana saying what he feels? You would rather him sit back and say what the media wants him to say? Fucking gay if you think so. I can sit here and argue why Dana White is the best at his job and why he will be with the UFC till the end, but I'm not going to.

So you think we'd be having this debate right now if Dana had just let Chuck do the retirement thing at his own pace? This is stupid drama that could have EASILY been avoided. I don't understand why people are happy with Dana being Dana when that means kicking up controversy and problems where there didn't have to be.

Good for me, I suppose though....

It is Chuck's career, it is his decision and his right to say if he's retiring, not have some asshole come out and force him to.

I agree with what Dana says, but that doesn't mean he's not in the wrong. He had absolutely no business going out and saying 3/4 of the shit he did.

Dana White is trying to make this seem like this is all about his love for his friend Chuck and him not wanting to see Chuck hurt himself. And yes I do buy that Dana White cares about Chuck. They go way back before Dana was the President. The manlove is real. Believe it. But why did Dana have to go public about this? Because he's an attention whore who wants to go, "look at me, I'm stopping my fighters from getting themselves hurt. I care about my fighters. I'm not a sleazy promoter like the others who just want to scramble their fighters' brains until they stop making them money!" At the end of the day, this is what it's all about. Feeding his fucking ego.

when's the last time a head of an organization took it upon himself to announce an athlete's retirement? and without their consent. even if i was going to retire, that'd rub me the wrong way if i was chuck and i'd want to spite him. it was his career, it should be his announcement, period. Dana aint his daddy and even if he was, not even your daddy can tell the world you're done before the sweat has even dried up from your latest fight. Prince, you're missing the point. You don't speak for another grown man on a major issue in that man's life. And quit acting like Dana's this honesty machine. Him calling Fedor way overrated is proof that he will put a bullshit spin on anything to suit his needs while keeping the fans last in line.

Yeah Dana is crossing a line. If Dana wants to act Godfatherly on Chuck and try to save him from himself BEHIND CLOSED DOORS, that's all good. But it is completely unprofessional to publicly force him into retirement. What the fuck is up with Dana White's thought processes? Dana is not like this evil guy like Gary Shaw. He has a lot of likable qualities. But his unprofessional behavior should have got him fired a long time ago.
