Seems to be what this section is for these days...

Competed in 1st Copa Ontario this past weekend, the first sanctioned bjj tournament in ontario (which, if you've been paying attention to the sanctioning bullshit going on w/ the ufc in canada these days, is a big deal)

this was my first tournament as a blue belt, so I was kinda nervous, but I ended up winning, which is good - unfortunately, there were only 2 girls in my division (not uncommon) so I only got 1 match

the finish is an americana from side, but you can't really see it, since there were no ringside spectators allowed

thanks to Lifer for the video!

probably going to compete in the NY International Open on the 18th of April as well
MacDaddy
That was badass. Do you guys do any judo training? It looked like you went for kata guruma there right before it went to the ground...

Congrats!

awesome job!
Lifer
you're welcome :)

next time push jorge for a female absolute so we can see more matches imo.
Burtonchik
supposedly, we had insurance issues w/ having an absolute
Omomatta
Great job!
Burtonchik
thanks

here's a good article about the tournament in gracie mag: [Link]
Carcass
Good job!! Well done. Sucks to only get one fight (after not losing, that is!)
dulljake
So Burton, how would you rank the skill level at this competition?
Burtonchik
white-blue was mostly local, but purple-brown was pretty decent

we're trying to get sanctioned & established, so some of the *cough* no comment *cough* renzo gracie teams and more of the gracie barra teams will come to our events (they don't do 'local' tournaments, only do the big sanctioned tournaments in the states)
Captain
Congrats on the win. According to the write-up it sounds like the event was a success and attracted a fair bit of attention, so hopefully this is a sign of good things to come.

Any tournaments coming up that you are training for?
Burtonchik
got a local gi & no-gi on may 23-24, opting out of toledo bjj open on may 17 (prob. only 1 women's division there anyway...)

and...

might be going to worlds june 4-7th...will know soon
Omomatta
whatever you do, make sure your matches aren't as gay as Fedor/Aoki..........talk about horrible.

of course, I know you'll bring it. how about this for an idea.....inverted triangle. call your shot.
Burtonchik
I've actually won w/ an inverted triangle before - it was at my black belt testing, at around 4 in the morning, they had a sub-only 'tournament' where all the black belts would place bets on matches

8 minutes into the final match w/ a girl who had a good 20 lbs on me, I pulled this, pretty much outta my ass
Omomatta
still awesome

had to fight at 163lbs this weekend (I weigh 131 and usually fight at -141 with gi, ring-side weigh in)

wellllllllllllllllllllllll, lost 1 match by 1 lousy advantage and then got smashed today in no-gi, add to that the fact that I had to bow out of both of my bronze medals, and give them to teamates, since there were 4 of us in one division, and I'm the lowest blue

finally, to cap it all off, when I lost my match by advantage, I stepped off the mat only to have carlos newton tell me "you should've swept her", hahaha! I would upload the picture, except the code on this godforsaken site is fucked

RECODE THE SITE PLS

Sorry you had a bad weekend. You will be back for the worlds.

You should have told Newton to go fuck himself and finish med school or go play with your dragon balls or something. jj :)
