(We've got a special treat for you guys this morning. Jake got in touch with UFC fighter Jason 'Dooms' Day. Word is he'll be returning to the octagon against Kendall Grove at UFC 96 in Ohio. For now though he took the time to break down next weekend's UFC 93 card for us.) I've recently been given the opportunity by the boyz at Fightlinker.com to put my picks for UFC 93 out there for the whole world to criticize. While I follow the sport intently, I try no to get too wrapped up in individual fights. I'm certainly a fan but I'm also busting my ass to meet up against many of these guys in the Octagon. Watching each event as a casual observer let's me appreciate the spectacle that is a live UFC event – there truly is nothing like it! You should try it from inside the cage... Light Heavyweight: Rich Franklin vs. Dan Henderson I love both these guys. They've both been around for a while now and I've certainly watched them as pioneers of the modern day UFC. Like most fans, this is definitely a fight I'm looking forward to seeing. Dan and Rich are both warriors with a ton of heart. Rich's strinking and Hendo's wrestling provide a classic match-up of wills. I'd like to think that this will be a three round war and while my hopes are that Ace puts on a great show, I just don't see anything other than Dan grinding out a decision. Henderson is going to take it simply because he is tough as dirt and almost impossible to KO. Light Heavyweight: Mark Coleman vs. Mauricio Rua This one is probably the hardest to call for me. Coleman is a classic ground and pounder who can devastate the unprepared with his wrestling and brute strength. Rua may have lost some of his luster since his fight with Griffin. However, we haven't seen Coleman in the Octagon since 2006. I have to go with Shogun on this one, ring rust sucks and I'm not sure Coleman will be able to pull this off. Middleweight: Alan Belcher vs. Denis Kang This one hits close to home for many reasons. Obviously, Belcher was kind enough to welcome me into the UFC in Montreal last year, which as you know, ended up in my favor. Denis Kang should be excited, like I was, for his first fight in the Octagon. I think his success elsewhere will translate into Kang overwhelming Belcher in the first frame. Denis hits harder and has more tools at his disposal – submission in round 1. Welterweight: Marcus Davis vs. Chris Lytle I see fight of the night contenders here. They've both made it clear that an all out brawl is in the works. Davis and Lytle are both strong, tough, and fast. And damn can they throw! I think Marcus will eventually end up catching Chris with a bomb and result in a 2nd round TKO. Middleweight: Jeremy Horn vs. Rousimar Palhares A fight for all the MMA technicians. I'm predicting an interesting fight that quickly turns into a technical ground battle. I might get a lot of heat for this pick but I'm going to pull for Horn via triangle. Welterweight: Martin Kampmann vs. Alexandre Barros I have an interest in this undercard bout because it will be Kampmann's first at 170, which seems to be a pretty good weight for his frame. He's tough and skilled at 185 so I expect more of the same with a little extra speed at welterweight. I like Martin's fighting style and he continues to improve under the watchful eye of Shawn Tompkins. You know where my money is. So there you have it, this is how I see it going down, if you dont like it you know where to find me!. Thanks to the gang at Fightlinker.com for the opportunity and make sure you watch for my return to the Octagon soon. Thanks for all your support! Keep checking out my site too at www.jaydaymma.com Franklin: 2nd / TKO Shogun: Dec Kang: 1rd/KO Davis: Dec Horn: 2rd sub Kampman: Dec Let's get everyone to put there pics here, so we can compare them with Jason's. Let the best man win (hint: it will not be me) Definitely looking forward to Franklin-Henderson. Although Jason Day is worrying me by predicting Dan is going to fall back into "Decision Dan" in this fight. He's probably right too. I don't disagree with too much other than thinking Davis-Lytle may turn out to be a grappling fight when one Davis lands some bombs and Lytle gives up and starts going for takedowns. Anytime fighters hype up with "Yeah we're just going to trade bombs all night!" it usually means "I'm going to surprise my opponent by taking it to the mat." I hope at least Kang doesn't disappoint and goes after Belcher like he was the shady doctor who prescribed Shelby that fatal bottle of painkillers. (there's my tasteless reference for January 9th.) Pahlares will destroy Horn, since Horn has looked like a fucking chump for the past 4 fights. Light Heavyweight: Mark Coleman vs. Mauricio Rua (KO round 2) Middleweight: Alan Belcher vs. Denis Kang (Decision) Welterweight: Marcus Davis (Decision) vs. Chris Lytle This depends on whether Lytle is a "pussy" (read - fucking retarded) or not. If he fought an MMA fight and not a brawl, he'd win. Middleweight: Jeremy Horn vs. Rousimar Palhares (sub r1 - yeah, I think Horn should retire pretty soon, that billion and one fight record is taking it's toll) Welterweight: Martin Kampmann (TKO R2) vs. Alexandre Barros @catch: I find that [Link] is a really good fighter-form comparer site for dumb picking. Surprisingly good. Thus far, everyone who has spent even a moment on the ground with Rousimar has been put in trouble immediately. If this were 2003, I might give the Horn the nod, but with the way he has looked recently I have a hard time picking him over Palhares. Much like we have seen with guys like Big Nog & Wand, being in all those wars tends to prematurely age fighters, and nobody outside of Travis Fulton has logged more ring/cage time than Jeremy Horn. Coleman was passed a whiz quiz at Pride 32. While he got his ass kicked, he did have his moments in that fight and managed to become the first guy since Cro Cop to make it out of the first round with Fedor. The Hammer is going to break Shogun again. Rua by submission, R1. Shogun's entire rep is on the line. Even if Mark loses, he'll still be the Hammer. No one can take that from him. But if shogun loses, he's just some shmo who couldn't hack it in the states. I think he comes out on fire, hurts coleman with knees, and catches a kneebar or choke on the ground. Denis Kang decision. Denis hasn't exactly been on fire lately...he may come out tentatively. He could easily lose this fight as well. Belcher isn't exactly the shiniest coin in the purse, but he can go pretty hard and fast. Lytle, TKO, R1. either that or Davis, TKO R1. I'll officially pick lights out though. The upset pick of Horn isn't terrible...Palhares has no standup, and Jeremy has at least some game on his feet. Provided he doesn't catch a glimpse of Chuck in the stands and go blind, he can pillow punch outpoint Rousimar. But I'm picking Palhares by guillotine, R2. Kampmann by brutal ravaging. After being made Nate Marquardt's bitch, Hitman is going to come in and take his frustrations out on Mr. Barros. That's cool to have Dooms putting up a post, thanks for the words Senor Day. Good luck next time out...I hope you get a rematch with Bisping and cave his damn head in. Shogun by 1TKO Belcher by Dec Davis by 2TKO Palhares by 1Sub Kampmann by 2Sub I'm going with Belcher as the upset pick. Kang is a world class fighter whose been around but has struggled against top talent as of late. Belcher is an up and comer on the rise and I would bet is training like never before. No ones giving him a chance against Kang so I would expect to see a much improved Alan Belcher from the one decisioned Ed Herman. No matter who wins, we'll have a new middleweight contender. DoomsDay-->please be gentle on Kendall. My 4 yr old daughter has the same name so I'd feel bad if you sent him to the hospital. Oh, and you should change your nickname to something silly like "Groundhog" or "Columbus". shogun sub Kang dec davis dec Palhares sub Kampman sub thanks for the picks jay and go get em in the cage.
