With TKO's Stephan Patry ditching the cold and dead sport of MMA for a trendy new sport he calls 'Strikeboxing' (which sounds like GrappleGrappling), everyone was wondering what was going to happen with Montreal's bustling fight scene. Fortunately, upstart company XMMA seems to recognize their opportunity to become a serious regional force and have stepped up their game:
XMMA 7 “Inferno” has secured the services of powerhouse Phil Baroni (13-10), who takes on rising Canadian Guillaume Delorenzi (5-0) in the main event. EliteXC standout Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos and former TKO lightweight champ Shane Rice also grace the card, while a lightweight title match between Kajan Johnson and Steve Claveau will also be waged.

Thierry Quenneville vs. Douglas Evans

We're still waiting with baited breath to hear who Cyborg is going to face. Fingers crossed it's someone serious in the top five of the sport. The next XMMA is February 27th and we'll be there, hopefully with a bunch of jackals.

I'm glad to see Delorenzi getting a big name like Baroni for his next fight. That guy is bound to do some great things and fighting the NYBA will get him some nice exposure. I'm also looking forward to Cyborg knocking some poor chick out.

I thought this was another post on XARM for a moment, which really really confused me and made "hopefully Cyborg will face someone in the top 5 of the sport" really funny

...sounds kinda cool, i can see how the whole "no ground game" thing will draw a lot more people in considering the fact that strikers like Baroni will actually have a chance now...but no jiu-jitsu? ...gay. If it's only going to be striking why even bother with the whole take-down rule at all and call it...i dunno...KICKBOXING? ...i'd rather watch a more legitimized organization like K-1 if thats the case.

Delorenzi has looked good in the fights I've seen, if he fights in '09 like he did in '08, Baroni is going to get his ass kicked.

The only downside to this bout is that it'll likely air on The Fight Network. The announcing done on previous XMMA events was so bad I had to mute it, especially whenever Robin Black opens his fucking mouth. Goddamn that dude is a cliche spewing tard.
