Cut off from the rest of the MMA watching world up here in Canada, I went to bed last night not knowing that a backlash was brewing against Wednesday's violent Fight for the Troops event. Lots of people thought the event was too violent: the brutal knockout of Yoshida, Al-Hassan's arm getting snapped, and Ben Saunders destroying a dude via muay thai. You could also say that Mike Swick's win over Jonathan Goulet was somewhat hardcore as well. But the cherry on top of this violence sundae wasn't seen on the broadcast but can be seen for free right now on UFC.com: Corey Hill breaking his leg in half while kicking his opponent.

Midsy said the event was 'marred' by these endings. Zach Arnold was annoyed by the fact that injured fighters were carted off the screen, never to be mentioned again. No health updates, no cooing assurances that everything was gonna be all right from the broadcast team. Maggie Hendricks didn't like the fact that Steve Cantwell bragged about snapping Razak Al-Hassan's arm.

My opinion, such as it is, is that this sort of shit happens all the time. These guys are out there fighting with bad intentions and when someone gets knocked out or injured, well that's a part of the job description. Not every fight can end with both guys standing, and to get all wound up because you got too much of a glimpse of the brutality that lives under the surface of the sport is kinda silly. Either you acknowledge what MMA really is and accept the fact that it's fucking violent and people WILL get hurt, or you're just sticking your head in the sand and pretending that MMA is something it isn't.

Other sports have fairweather fans who come and go depending on how well their team is doing. MMA seems to have people who like to cherry pick what they see as 'real MMA'. Guys like GSP and Randy Couture and so on and so forth. Then when something like a dude's leg exploding or an arm popping out of joint happens or a guy celebrates the ass whupping he just unleashed, you say "This isn't what I signed up for."

Yes, it is. MMA is a violent sport and people get hurt all the time. Now of course we shouldn't be callous assholes about it, but let's try not to be giant pussies either, okay?

okay
Fear and Loathing
It's just rare for all that shit to happen on one night. The UFC was trying to promote helping troops with injuries. When the fighters in the cage were dealing them out.

i like how joe rogan stopped the fight and the ref had no clue what was going on. i dont think corey hill knew that his leg was snapped in half until he looked at it.
i think the troops got what they wanted.
Tertio
i agree with the Cantwell statement. You cant fucking go out and celebrate seriously injuring someone. The sport is not about breaking someones arm. Yes i agree with you that these things will happen from time to time. But fighters should have the decency to not fucking do handstands saying how much theyve waited all their life to break someones arm.

I BROKE THAT FUCKING TERRORSITNIGGERFAG'S ARMS ! AMERICA YEAAAAH !
Captain
That ref who failed to see Hill's leg snap in two was the same one who separated that little Mir doppleganger, Bruno, when he had that other dude's back, and kept saying "you gotta do something." Fuckin hillbilly fuckface.

Post of the month! Its like you decided to remind me why Fightlinker.com is good thing.

TERRORISTNIGGERFAG? Thats, uh... well, I don't know what that is, but its something.

I just think it wouldn't feel so bad if ALL the fighters who met brutal endings in front of US troops were minorities: There were two black guys (one whose parents were most likely members of the Nation of Islam), a French-Canadian, a Japanese, and a German-American (total longshot Wolff's tattoo's looked very Reich-ish).

For a charity event, the environment seemed very hostile. It just felt like a USO show from the 1940s or something. But the fights were awesome

In all fairness this was the most fucked up brutal ass card I've seen in a long time.
If any of these things happened in separate events I doubt too many people would complain but it was just a blitzkrieg of disgusting shit.
Captain
Wolff looked pretty Hawaiian'esque to me.

You have to watch the video of the Hill fight to get the Joe Rogan audio. It is classic. He's literally screaming at the ref to stop the fight.
Schrute Boxe
yeah, I might just be thinking of Wolfenstein
Millertime
Rogan must of been high last night because he was fucking hilarious. Some of my favorite quotes. "Right on the package" "inside leg kick right to the package" "Razak al-Hussan looks to be a good striker as well and he has a fantastic Afro"
Schrute Boxe
he must've come straight from the High Times photo shoot
Fightlinker
heh the dude is a comedian and we wonder why he's so funny ;-)

I agree, if the violence had been spread out over several cards it would have been 'fine' for most people. But that's just a perception thing. Does it really change the nature of the sport overall? We need to accept MMA for what it is, sometimes shit like this happens.
SCORCHAMATIC
There next benefit card needs to be thrown for all the motherfuckers who got injured in these fights. Great night of fight, but damn......the Corey Hill leg snap is hard to watch.
J
Wow, that leg is the most crazy fucked up thing I've ever seen. Now I know how all those old fogey football fans felt watching that guy break his thing.
theinsaneoneJustinMcCully
"oh shit did that just happen?" All night long! Fantastic event.
Ruggertenthousand
Last night was one of the best overall night of fights in a LONG time( including PPV). It was awesome. It is a violent sport; it is the essence of why people watch MMA.

All the laying and praying and tons of decisions have 'softened' the culture of the mma scene. I believe that Dana releasing tonz of guys for being boring recently was the direct cause for the great fights last night. Guys either have to make their mark as a newcomer or maintain a high level , or fight somewhere else.

Anyone that is complaining about the violence should watch the Disney channel, and/or find another line of work.
I am the Liquor
ok im a fogey, but I think the Hill break was even more disgusting than the Thiesman one. Oh well shit happens. I think most hard core fans deep down like a little carnage. If they are being honest. Or maybe Im just a sick fuck.
FiveBoltMain
I like carnage just as much as anyone else, but the Hill thing made me sad. He was winning the fight & Jebus told him that it wasn't ment to be. Damn you Jebus!!
