BJ Penn vs Georges St Pierre is an interesting fight on many levels. While it's going to be very interesting to see what happens in the cage, the 'political' fallout from that fight will be just as interesting if not more so. If GSP wins, he moves on to face Anderson Silva in a superfight at 185. If Penn wins ... well, we don't really know what happens then: "The problem I always talk about with B.J. is trying to contain this kid and keep him focused on staying at 155 and defending his title there," said White recently. "Should B.J. win, one of the things he would do is defend two titles at the same time. Nobody has ever done that (in the UFC). It's never been done." I've met 16 year old girls more decisive than BJ Penn. Mind you, they were just decisive in the fact that I'm a creepy old guy and no I can't give them a backrub. Whatever. Their loss. Still, you'd think Penn would take the time to think things through and decide what the fuck he's doing with his career. At least one thing is pretty plain, though: BJ Penn doesn't give a shit about the lightweight division, and having him defend both belts would mean you've got two divisions running at half speed. It would basically be a vanity thing for Penn. If we could expect a title defense every three months from the Hawaiian maybe I wouldn't have a problem with it. But this is a dude who's FAMOUS for being lazy and unmotivated. I'm all for super fights, but not at the price of fucking everything else up. I'd like to think that Dana White does have a plan in place to deal with shit if BJ wins, but I'm starting to think he's just crossing his fingers that Georges takes the fight. Which would be terrible news ... it's a scientific fact that whenever Dana doesn't have a contingency plan, things always go bad. Besides honestly no one in lightweight looks to be able to touch Penn, and one of the biggest killers of a dominant athlete is when there's no challenge left and boredom sets in. Dana's job is to make sure the challenges are there. Florian can have another shot at the title but after that I have absolutely no interest in seeing Sherk, Florian or Stevenson get another title attempt. They need to start building that division again. Therein lies the rub. Two title defense per year would require BJ to fight four times per year. Problem is, he has only fought five times in the last three years. BJ likes lots of time off between fights. There is no way in hell he will ever fight on a three month schedule again. If BJ holds both titles, we'll be lucky to see each belt get defended once a year, and if BJ ever gets injured we might see one of the belts go undefended for more than a year. In this day & age of 8-12 week training camps and 30 day medical suspensions, it is unrealistic to expect a high salaried champion to fight four times a year. Two fights per year is pretty much the norm and three fights per year is the absolute maximum. 2. Penn loses that fight. 3. 4 man LW tournament is set up with Penn given the easiest route to getting the gold. 4. Penn still manages to lose to Uno, a guy he'd already defeated to lose another shot at title.(Declared a draw, but to those who watched it should've been a loss, and they both looked so shitty that they got rid of the entire LW division) 5. Penn somehow gets gifted another title shot IN A HIGHER WEIGHTCLASS. 6. Penn refuses to defend title and vacates belt. 7. Penn goes around the globe looking like moderately steamed over shit. 8. Penn returns to the UFC after a few years, and is immediately gifted a #1 contender's fight. 9. Penn loses #1 contender's fight. 10. GSP injured, Penn is gifted another title shot. 11. Penn loses title fight. 12. Penn drops to LW and faces a LW that's neither been relevant in MMA for half a decade and is also coming off a KO loss, in a #1 contender's fight. 13. Penn given LW title shot against Stevenson (this wasn't an interim fight, Sherk was stripped). 14. Penn defends LW title an amazing one time (against Sherk). 15. Penn somehow gifted another title shot at a higher weightclass. So after all this, after all the gifts he's been given, Dana wants to try playing the poor, innocent angle. You're fucking responsible for this, Dana, don't sit there and try to play coy. BJ's done with LW division, he will clear it out at WW and move on. The UFC better make sure that B.J Penn defends his lightweight belt within at least 12 months since his Sherk defense. Or else this is some fucking bullshit.
