Poor Mac Danzig ... here he was thinking he was ready for a title run, and now after a decision loss to Clay Guida he's stuck fighting Josh Neer at UFC Fight Night 17. Sure, it sucks that he's effectively out of contention for the moment but it could be worse. Josh Neer is a nice soft opponent for Danzig, someone who will put up an entertaining fight but doesn't have much of a chance of winning.

Still, you gotta wonder how happy Danzig can be. His loss to Guida was back in September and UFC Fight Night 17 is in February. That means 5 months of sitting around for a fight that doesn't really do much for him. It's literally the kind of match that will only teach us something new if Mac somehow loses.

You'd figure with the number of shows going up and up and up for the UFC that guys like Danzig would be getting rotated a bit faster than 5 months. Three months seems to be that magical fast turnaround number, and four should really be the limit of the norm ... enough time for a dude to take a few weeks off and then put together a really solid camp. While I understand keeping big ticket dudes like Randy Couture and Chuck Liddell on the shelf until the right fights fall into place, who gives a shit about doing that with guys like Danzig?

Since when is Neer a 'nice soft opponent'?

Ask Joe Stevenson, Melvin Guillard & Din Thomas about Neer being 'soft'. Neer is 24-7 and most of his losses came when he was fighting as a tiny WW against much bigger guys. Drew Fickett, Josh Burkman, & Nick Thompson are all studs and all had a pretty massive size advantage over him. The Diaz brothers didn't have a massive size advantage, but those guys are fucking studs and there is no shame in losing to them.

The fact of the matter is, Neer has a much more impressive MMA resume than Danzig. Seriously, go take a look at Danzig's record and tell me if he has three wins that can measure up to Stevenson/Thomas/Guillard. Mac has spent most of his career beating up on nobodies and had no answer for the UFC's premier LW gatekeeper.

The Dentist is going to rearrange Danzig's over-rated grille.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if Danzig loses that fight.

Josh Neer is no pushover man. This is a pick em fight but Neer has way
better wrestling so I can see him taking Mac to the ground and keeping him there.
Calling Neer a soft opponent is weak analysys he might do some damage yet in the lightweight division.

I want to know who Danzig has beaten that has people buying into his hype.

Honestly, if he had not been on TUF or showed up in Pride to take an ass kicking from Mach Sakurai, Fightlinker would know who the fuck he is.

Damn, beat me too the Sakurai bit...

Yuo guys nuts? Danzig is gonna get his ass kicked.

I agree with godzillad. Danzig's never really impressed the crap outta me, and he's going down.
Fightlinker
Bah, I stick to my guns. Danzig is gonna blast through neer, it'll be a great fight but Mac isn't gonna lose.
kentyman
And that, boys and girls, is how grape photos are made.
Fightlinker
heh. True.

I dont know, it looks like I'm in agreement with pretty much every other comment on here. I think the dentist could be a spoiler for mac. He's got a few good wins and some competitive loses. And I think danzig might not be quite as good as people think he is.
kentyman
I think it'll be a close fight. But I wouldn't bet either way, no matter how many grapes are involved.

Danzig can't knock Neer out, and he's not going to submit him. His only hope is a top control decision, and I don't think his base is good enough to take it. Completely discounting Neer is ridiculous. He'll never be the champ, but he's about as high level a gatekeeper as you can get. Neer by decision.
