While everybody (myself included) has been celebrating Dana's tiny acquiescence that he may allow Gina Carano to compete in the WEC, Bloody Elbow's Michael Rome thinks it's nothing more than a slap in the face: Enter Gina Carano, the third biggest free television draw in MMA history, behind Tito Ortiz and Kimbo Slice. She may even be bigger than Tito, because she drew ratings completely on her own as opposed to being in a big title fight or in a big grudge match built over months on a reality show. Not only were her gains unbelievable, they came mostly in the target demographic of males 18-34. I'm still of the opinion that the WEC will give women the room they need to develop. I don't buy into Dana's "there's not enough talent" argument, but I will say there's not enough star power outside of Gina to drive a woman's division in the UFC. The WEC, on the other hand, is a perfect place to build up an excellent crop of potential stars. As for the WEC on Versus being a novelty league, well ... you have to start somewhere. Spike used to be a joke station (born of the ashes of The Nashville Network, for fucks sake) and the UFC helped it grow into a serious cable channel - well, as serious as you can be when you air shows like Manswers. While Versus is still weak, it's ratings are slowly going up. But that shit won't grow on it's own, and it needs strong programming to continue rising. There's no reason why the WEC can't carve out a very solid home for itself on Versus now that it's abandoning it's "UFC farm league" feel in exchange for different weight classes. Bringing in women just makes sense in that way - it further distinguishes the promotion and adds in another mega-star like Gina Carano. Seems like a match made in heaven to me.  i think WEC would be better cause it will make sure womens mma is taken seriously and allowed to grow with out fake hype  agreed, the WEC needs to fill the void and women's mma along with the lighter weightclasses is exactly what it needs to make the promotion distinctive.  Is having 145 and 135 exclusively in the WEC a slap in the face to those fighters?I don't really think so. Women fighting in the same boat as those weight classes. It's not marketable yet. Gina is, Faber is, Torres is, but the rest of the division isn't yet. Let the WEC make stars and go from there.  Gina could always take Jon Fitch's place in the UFC, at least she would have a chance to make weight. Micheal Rome has been peddling that weirdo feminist argument for at least a month. Seems kinda silly to boldly say she was the third biggest draw on free TV and did it all on her own when both times she was on free TV she was on a Kimbo card. We saw with the Lawler/Smith card what happened to the ratings without Kimbo. I think the WEC is perfect.  i'm curious if NSAC would allow women to fight when they have their periods...its like having an open cut ok gotta go ***runs away*** but seriously, I still belive that high-level women's mma is still pretty thin ...especially for the fact they can't all belong in 1 wt. division. Because numbers can always be manipulated, let's say Gina is a legitimate ratings draw for argument sake. Being a ratings draw on network television in prime time doesn't mean Gina, with her devastating striking and equally devastating curves, can boost ppv buys. And is putting her on SPIKE TV really any better than putting her on VERSUS. IMO, WEC has put on far better fight cards than the UFN on SPIKE TV. Zuffa should throw Condit and Larson in the shark tank that is the UFC's welterweight division, shit can it's WEC counterpart, and build a single weight class women's division around Gina and Cyborg.
