It's a fucking slaughterhouse at the UFC today: amongst those released are Josh Hendricks (and rightfully so), Marcus Aurelio (eh, okay. Whatever), Christian Wellisch (Christian who?) and Jon Fitch. Wait... what???
That's right, Jon Fitch is gone. Josh Koscheck might be next. And Cain Velasquez too. What do these three fighters (plus whoever that Christian Wellisch guy is) have in common? They come from the same camp, AKA, and have the same manager, DeWayne Zinkin. Apparently Dana White is done working with him, and that means all fighters represented by him are on the chopping block. Here's the sitch from Kevin Iole:
"We're looking for guys who want to work with us and not against us, and frankly I'm just so [expletive] sick of this [expletive] it's not even funny," White said from Honolulu, where he flew Wednesday from Toronto to hold a news conference to announce the B.J. Penn-Georges St. Pierre fight for UFC 94 on Jan. 31 in Las Vegas.
"Affliction is still out there trying to build its company. Let [Fitch] go work with them. Let him see what he thinks of those [expletives]. [Expletive] him. These guys aren't partners with us. [Expletive] them. All of them, every last [expletive] one of them."
Fitch said Wednesday the dispute was over his reluctance to sign a lifetime contract to allow his name and likeness to be used in a video game the UFC is planning with THQ. He said the dispute has nothing to do with money and that he never caused a problem during his time in the UFC.
There's a whole bunch more interesting shit between the Iole article (which gives you Dana's side of the story) and MMA Rated's article (which gives you more details into the video game and merchandising agreement that resulted in this massive fuckover).
And hey, who knows? Maybe if Jon Fitch and Josh Koscheck weren't involved I would be capable of seeing Dana White's reasons to a degree. But Fitch and Koscheck were hardcore UFC butt boys. Josh Koscheck just stepped up at UFC 90 and saved Dana's bacon on that event. AND he decided he was still going to fight again at the UFC For the Troops event in another week. As for Fitch, we all know about how he toiled in obscurity for years in the UFC's prelims without a peep.
We're typically pretty jovial guys around here, but it's days like this that make you ashamed to be part (even in the most miniscule way) of a sport where shit like this can happen. This goes beyond simple business decisions into vindictive, manipulative, and downright despotic behavior. Dana White has always seemed like a pretty smart businessman. Ruthless to the very edge of reason, but rarely past it. We all just saw him go off the fucking deep end, and no amount of video blogs from the UFC will make fans forget the shit that just went down.
I have posted about this here and elsewhere, but I agree with Dana here. Allowing Fitch to set that precedent was just fucking impossible to do from a business standpoint. Fitch, Kos and Cain should say 'fuck you' to their management (much like a certain site advises a certain WAMMA HW champ to do from time to time) and SIGN THE FUCKING DEAL.
Mafia tactics. Offers they can't refuse. There's no limit to unreasonable demand. That's what this shows us. Anything goes.
I hope this is just a bluff by the UFC to try and get the fighters to drop their agent. Which is still scummy strong-arm tactics but at least has non-monoply non-mafia precedent in the business world.
please like I said below no other top fighters in the UFC or the managers who represent them had a problem with signing this at all. So if you want to be ashamed at any one let it be Duane Zinkin and Bob Cook of Zinkin Entertainment for over playing there clients worth for there video game likeness rights. So FL you think the UFC should of just gave in to one camp on this video game shit after all the other fighers signed it with no problem. You don't think that would of opened a ''Pandora's box''. Please this shappens in all other major sports video games why should the UFC be held to a different standard. I guess that Affliction or Strike Force MMA video game coming out is offering the fighters a better deal for there likeness ?
You want to talk about a bad precedent what about firing a top-five contender and possibly an entire stable of quality fighters because they were only willing to give you ten years of their image? This was not a reasonable demand.
How can the onus be put on Fitch and the others at AKA when the UFC pretty much said to sign the worst contract imaginable or they're out of work? This was fighters standing up for their rights and if that's the precedent Dana White wanted to squash then I simply can't agree with him.
Shocbomb keeps ignoring this, but this ISN'T actually common practice in other sports. PGA and the NBA do not actually have exclusive merchandising and likeness contracts and Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan have been able to independently pursue endorsement opportunities outside of their organizations' spheres of influence.
Overseas hockey players who return home during the off-season take their merchandising/endorsement agreements with them, they are not bound to NHL.
LaVar Arrington, former Redskins linebacker, did not appear in any football video games up until his season with the Giants because he opted to not sign a very similar clause and was able to successfully negotiate his status with the NFL.
So there are just as many precedents in other sports that argue this move to be BS.
The WEC will swoop them up. Carlos Condit needs competition. Kidding. The video game will be a best seller and gay at the same time. "Press the omoplata button!! Pull rubber guard!!" Fighters should be released due to their preformance in the fight, they should lose money for this type of shit, not their jobs
Who cares if he is a top five contender or even if was the fucking champ if you are not goig to go along with what all the other fighters did you got to go and thats how shit works in any business if the AKA fighters think the grass is greener on the other side of the fence then go out and see. What rights and what better deal is any AKA fighter going to get down the road what other MMA org is going to even make a video game down the road. And another thing the fighters who signed for the video game are getting paid pretty dam good for signing there likeness over for ever what other mma org out therehas even done something like that. I mean in other sports can A-Rod or any other MLB player just go out and sign with any video game company they want after the MLB players association signs to a video game contract No they can't.its the same shit in all other major sports. Ever hear the saying don't bite the hand that feeds you and what other hand will feed the fighters as good as the UFC does now. Not one org out there is going to sign Fitch for what he makes now with the UFC. I would love to see how fast all of the people who htink the UFC is wrong would run a MMA business any different ? The answer would be into the ground like all the other MMA orgs do.
Dana and his vindictive nature warm my heart. I can't think of another human being who affords us the opportunity to use the adjective "despotic". Bless his black heart.
Schrute Boxe the word you used hits the nail right on the head and that is
independently pursue.Sure a fighter could get other terms down the road if the UFC wanted to renegotiate the terms.and lets face it there are not to many Michaael Jordans or Tiger woods in the MMA world who bring in multi Millions in for that company and most places when you have a money maker like that will renegotiate the terms.
You mean Beer Belly hairs right ? Ah yeas they do get paid and please let me know what other mma org is offering this to its fighters right now. In exchange for granting Zuffa the Merchandise Rights, a fighter is entitled to (i) ten percent(10%) of gross revenue for sales of Licensed Merchandise completed by Zuffa, and (ii) twentypercent (20%) of gross revenue for royalties and/or license payments received from third parties.
I guess Affliction or Dreams will come out with a better offer for the fighters when there game comes out or maybe the AKA fighters will do better selling there own game on AKA's website o out of the trunk of there cars.
So even if that is case which from what I have read its not who is going to pay better or where can a fighter get better press and exposure then being in a video game for there sponsors. Sure the fighters make the UFC but the UFC also makes the fighters. I think Fedors popularity and selling power in the U>S have shows you that.
Luke Thomas just made a great point that I agree with just now hears what he said in the post “The UFC has every right to terminated Fitch’s contract & why would they allow a fighter who is not doing what 95% of the other fighters are doing to remain with the company?”it does make no sence at all for there Business practice.
wow...I'm really at a loss for words. *sniffsniff* does anyone smell that? Its smells like...is that a FIGHTERS UNION I smell? Oh and is that Randy leading the way? It won't be long now. Good job D dubs...you just got yourself a brand new headache and you deserve it you stupid son of a bitch.
Randy leading the way when he just signed with Zuffa and made about 2 million on the last PPV sure I really think Randy would lead the way now ? maybe a year ago but not now. The best you will get is Frank Trigg or Travis Lutter leading the way !
