One of the major points of contention during the amateur fights in the Olympic games revolves around a new scoring system that Teddy Atlas referred to as 'a video game system.' Five judges at ringside have punch controls to touch when they think a fighter has scored a point or multiple points. However, in order for a fighter to score a point, three of those five judges must punch the control within one second or else a fighter is not awarded a point. Naturally, this system has led to complete chaos and several fighters who deserved points have not gotten any while some undeserving fighters have been awarded points during fights.
Wow. They took boxing and turned it into a glorified version of Dragon's Lair.
I watched a couple matches and the scoring was just horrible. Just like stated above, people were getting points when they shouldn't have and those that should have gotten awarded points did not get them.
in seoul there were a half dozen or so instances where korean fighters got pwned and won anyways. i remember watching one south korean looking shocked, i think it was a win over Roy Jones Jr who at the time was the best in the world and completely dominated the chump.
so they thought "hey! you know what'll fix this shit? BUTTONS. they make elevators go!"
Boxing isn't even really boxing. They don't defend because all out offense is the only way to win with the scoring system. It's a lot more like Hockey Punch Each Other in the Face Contests
The button stuff is a retarded idea. What was wrong with watching the fight and using your brain to remember who hit who the most? I hope this doesn't come to the pros or it will be anarchy. And judging sucks enough in boxing and MMA as it is. Although boxing judges are a little better than clueless MMA judges. They're more bought off in poor decisions than just ignorant to what they're seeing.
Boxing is not gay but this scoring is. My boy from my gym (Rasheed Warren) got hosed because of this system. He thought that he was comfortably ahead when he was a point behind. The judges weren't scoring any of the punches that he was landing.
If you score by the rounds, then you're still gonna get jobbed by vindictive judges. Korea fucked Roy Jones Jr up the ass with their scoring. Same happened to Evander Hollyfeild in '88.
They need to just take off all the padding that they put on these guys and make it more like the early '80's. The American coaches, also, need to be teaching them pro styles and not this Floyd Maywether bullshit of hit and skip. They need to teach them to knock the dude the fuck out. Look at the stats starting from when they inflated the gloves and made them wear headgear. KO's have gone down...
Those buttons SUCK. Now what they really need is joysticks, and the harder the punch, the further up you go with the joystick. Now you have a foolproof system.
Nono, I got it! You put an accelerometer in each glove synced with the judges buttons, so when they press for a hit you can check how fast that particular punch was going! Nono, wait! You put some kind of pressure gauge in the helmet so you that can measure the impact of a punch! Or if you submerge both fighters in a pool..... blah blah blah... using a GPS unit....
