Exchange rate for some PRIDE fighters sucks

Pretty much every second question Joachim Hansen has to answer is “Why didn’t you agree to fight in the UFC?”. And every time Hansen answers like this:

“I just hope people understand that the problems [with Zuffa] weren’t about the money,” Hansen said. “It was about them treating me with honor and keeping their word. I would rather fight for free, then to bend down to them. My soul is not for sale. Anyways, now I’m a free man, and everything will be as it was,” explained the former Pride fighter.

Of course, if there’s anything Randy Couture has taught us is that when they say it’s not about the money, it’s really about the money:

They offered me a fight some months ago – I wasn’t sure if they had bought Pride for what the hell was going on. They offered me a fight against Marcus Aurelio, they offered me half the salary of what I got in Pride. Obviously at the time they had already bought Pride, in my opinion they also bought my contract, so how can they offer me half the salary?

Hey, I’m not about to argue with Hansen’s logic. If I got a new boss who tried to cut my salary in half, I’d have told them where to stick it and how deep too.

I really have to wonder what the fuck is going on with the UFC’s heads that they even try this shifty shit. We’re probably talking a 15-20k difference in pay, chump change for the UFC. Just fucking pay it, and if Hansen underperforms, you drop the guy’s contract. How the UFC can keep saying they’ve got the best fighters in the world and then drive away talent like Hellboy without even giving him one match just boggles my mind.

UFC/Zuffa/White all depend on the typical fan not knowing what the fuck they are watching, so they don’t need every great fighter.

They only need a few top names to promote with a bunch of Salmon’s thrown in. It keeps their profits high, and allows brain dead fans to enjoy a punch fest.

Zuffa is the big bully right now, and until M1/HDNET/Pride 2 want to show up, survive, and compete with them…we will be missing out on some talent.

  • intenso says:

You don’t need the best fighters to have the best fights. Sometimes the “best” fighters have the “worst” fights. Zuffa “depends” on a virtual monopoly.

  • Atom says:

If the UFC had to chose two or three LW’s to keep from PRIDE, why Gono and Aurelio and not Gomi, Aoki, or Hansen?

  • Lifer says:

Gomi and Aoki to leave Nipon? Get real.

  • Asa says:

Atom, they didn’t necessarily have that option. They didn’t get the PRIDE contracts, per se, in most cases the fighters had to choose to sign them over. Guys like Gomi were gonna be treated like just another fighter by the UFC: marketed poorly and treated to the same scumbag WWE contract everyone in the UFC gets (remember Arlovski? Me neither).

If you had to choose between being treated nicely and having career freedom in your homeland, or treated like cattle or a slave in another, which would you choose?

Because if you pay it for an overhyped journeyman like Hansen, then you’ll have to pay it for everyone else too. It’s part of what caused the Couture problem. By offering Captain Fightdodger Fedor a shit-ton of money when he has no drawing power, you then have every fighter with drawing power (Hey Randy!) wanting what they were willing to give the R00skie.

Simple economics. Don’t pay a guy like Hansen more than your people who are actual draws so they don’t end up pulling a Couture.

  • Mobb Deep says:

Meh, I think its a smart move on the UFC’s part. I don’t see Hansen doing much in the UFC other than getting pinned up against the cage and getting pounded and/or layed on.

  • Jersey Tomato says:

I have seen some of Hansen’s Pride fights and would not describe him as an over-hyped journeyman. Anyone who can pull off a gogoplata in competition (stoned or otherwise) deserves props in my book. He’s got skills.

If the UFC doesn’t pay him what he feels he’s worth, then he will just have to make do in the other promotions (which in some cases will pay better than the UFC). Life goes on.

  • kentyman says:

Jersey, I think you’re confusing Hansen with Nick Diaz and his gogoplata against Gomi.

According to Sherdog.com, Hansen’s only experience with a gogo is a loss against Shinya Aoki.

Well probably because it’s supply and demand. Nobody in the USA that jumped on the UFC band-wagon in the last 4-5 years knows who the hell Joachim Hansen is. I could care less if I ever see him fight. If he wants to suck up the small pay so he can make a name for the USA fans that would up his worth but right now – who the eff cares about this guy? Not me.

Plus, after HUGE names came from PRIDE to the UFC and sucked it hardcore (Heath Herring, CroCop, etc) that’s probably the main reason PRIDE fighters now have a lower exchange rate.

  • my point is how can the UFC claim to have the best fighters when they don’t even bring guys like Hansen in for a fight with fair financial terms? If they brought him in for one fight, he lost, and he was dropped, then I’m okay with that. But I just don’t get how they use the whole “He’s a nobody here” attitude. Fuck, so was GSP until he fought in the UFC.

  • Jersey Tomato says:

    Kentyman,

You speak the truth. Hansen was indeed on the wrong end of a gogoplata applied by Aoki. I stand corrected.

I guess Hellboy Hansen is back to being an over-hyped journeyman (although I do recall him pulling off a nice armbar submission against Jason Ireland last year and he does have one victory over Gomi to go with the fore-mentioned loss).

thanks for keeping my shit in check!

  • Lifer says:

all the guys with gogo’s are all so similar tho man.. nick diaz, brad imes, shinya aoki… they’re practically triplets.

  • Jersey Tomato says:

    Lifer,

Yo buddy. You are just piling on now. I already took my medicine.

  • RT says:

He’s fighting on the 31st in Japan and you can all watch just how fucking bad ass Hansen is.

  • Michaelthebox says:

fightlinker: Half price for Hansen IS fair terms. LW fighters are a dime a dozen, and Hansen is (or was) paid well enough to be a top 5 LW. The UFC already has 4 or 5 guys who are better or at a similar level to Hansen, and get paid less.

Not to mention that it is REALLY bad business to bring in guys for big bucks when the hometown guys are getting paid less. Hell, Randy got pissed off when the UFC offered a bunch of money for fucking Fedor. The LW division would have had a shit fit if they’d overpaid Hansen.

  • Ted Dibiase says:

    hansen is good. and marketable.

hes white, with tattoos. what more do those brain dead fans want?

  • Jersey Tomato says:

who doesn’t have a tattoo these days? My Grandma just got a bitchin’ “George W” tatto across her back, plus the mandatory rose on her ankle. Tramp!

  • Ryan says:

Well, consider Aurelio. He got paid 30k to lose a shitty ass decision to Guida, and now (apparently) 60k to beat up a total can, Caudillo. See anybody complaining about that? Good god, Sam Stout got paid what, 6k to headline an UFN card! Aurelio was a dark match! Wtf…

I’ll readily admit I’m biased because I like Hansen fights. But anyone who hasn’t seen his fights against Uno (fight of 2005) and Azeredo (fight of 2006) really should watch those, and tell me again Hansen isn’t awesome to watch. I’m not claiming he’d walk in and mop up the division, but he consistently puts on awesome fights.
