EliteXC broadcast team announced

I guess CBS’s opinion is that you can never have too many people in the broadcast booth, because they’re now up to four peeps:

Frank Shamrock, a five-time Ultimate Fighting champion and perhaps the biggest name in the sport, will serve as an analyst and color commentator for the inaugural “CBS Elitexc Saturday Night Fights.”

The telecast will be anchored by CBS veteran play-by-play man Gus Johnson, a practicing martial artist and mainstay for the network’s college basketball, NBA and NFL games. He’ll be joined by Mauro Ranallo, who hosts Showtime’s mixed martial arts programming, and Showtime boxing reporter Karyn Bryant.

While I’m certainly happy that Bill Goldberg is nowhere to be seen on this list, I’m kinda surprised that they opted to ditch Stephen Quadros but keep Mauro Ranallo. They’re now pretty heavy on color commentary and flappy heads (which is what I call the guys who are just there to sell the company lines and put over the sponsors) but light on guys who have solid play by play experience.

i thought flappy heads was the term for canadians.

i am quite amused that frank shamrock is possibly the biggest name in the sport. i mean, really, i had no idea.

  • garth says:

i’m not a huge fan of shamrock as a booth guy, he’s a bit slow on the uptake sometimes. may just be my impression though.

are they going to have one of those talkers be like a “roving reporter”, like you’d see in a football or basketball game?

  • Stellar53 says:

    Now back to you Frank

  • j says:

    Steal Joe Rogan plz.

  • FRANKIE says:

Gus Johnson is fucking awesome and Frank is a giant step up from Goldberg. This is good.

  • DonnyG says:

“… and perhaps the biggest name in the sport”
Really? I don’t think Frank is even the biggest name in the sport with the last name Shamrock.

  • DannyP72 says:

:( I was hoping for a Bill Goldberg trainwreck.

  • Boxing reporter and martial art practicioner does not equal good commentary.

Frank should do most of the talking even as a color commentary..

  • I’m thinking Gus will be fine but again, the event is very personality heavy without a lot of guys with track records of being able to cover the technical side of what’s going on.

  • Gong says:

Where the hell is Scott Ferrall?

  • esther says:

Karyn is going to be the roving reporter.

  • I signed up for Fightliner! says:

The women is always the roving reporter it usually goes like this “Kimbo knocks out a can” now to you Tits Mcgee (Busty LaRue?) “Thanks Tom, I have nothing to say of importance but look I have these, back to you Tom”.

  • Mike_N says:

Gus Johnson absolutely rules, but I’m not sure if Gus + Mauro=overkill. Frankly, I’d rather just hear Gus and Frank in the booth.

And I haven’t had Showtime in years, so Karen Bryant WTF?! Boxing? Really? Wow–I remember her from her VJ days.
