I was kinda wondering when we’d find out how fucked up Ed Herman’s knee was from his heroic / moronic attempt to fight on it at UFC 102. He blew it out sometime near the end of the first round against Aaron Simpson and then pretty much pogo sticked out for the second round to damage it even more. He lasted all of 17 seconds before collapsing on the mat grabbing at his leg. And now he has to pay the piper:
Last week, Herman received the final word: A torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left leg will require surgery. Herman estimated he will be sidelined up to 9 months while going through the rehabilitation process.
“My ACL’s gone,” said Herman, who attended Columbia River High School.
However, there was also good news for the former Chieftain. Herman said his medical costs will be covered by UFC, since the injury occurred during a UFC-sanctioned fight. And Herman stated he plans to put the surgery process in the hands of Dr. Don Roberts, a Vancouver-based orthopedic surgeon known in the region for treating injuries sustained by members of the Portland Trail Blazers.
“I should make a strong recovery,” Herman said. “And I plan to make a strong rehab.”
9 months is pretty brutal. All I’m wondering now is how much worse the injury was because he decided to try and tough it out in the second round. On the other hand, going out in a blaze of glory is a good way to make sure you’re not going to get cut from the UFC for the loss. Does it suck that fighters need to think like that? Yes it does. But the UFC has to cut people to make room for more new guys, and you do what you have to do to stay off the chopping block.
