Eat shit, mainstream MMA media

Denny Burkholder tries to do some lame last year / this year comparisons and just ends up pissing me off. Check this out:

Last year:
Popular MMA message boards loved mainstream coverage and pined for more of it. It was viewed as a positive, healthy sign that the sport was gaining respect. (Before I continue, let me mention that I bring up MMA websites and blogs because — as others have correctly observed — MMA is a sport that is seriously intertwined with the web like no other sport.)

No MMA website or blog had a relationship — formal or informal — with any mainstream company. Bloggers used to write about MMA just for fun.

This year:
Popular MMA message boards tend to hate mainstream MMA coverage, with posters wondering aloud “why don’t they just hire people like us?” (Which draws various far-reaching assumptions such as that mainstream writers didn’t know about MMA until The Ultimate Fighter, never posted on an MMA message board, and are not, therefore, “people like us.” Which is wrong on all counts. Believe it or not, some of us were following the sport before today’s major MMA websites and message boards existed. **Raises hand.**)

Bloggers that used to write about MMA for fun now seem more concerned with scoring a big partnership, selling ads, and “cashing in.” Others have shifted their focus from covering the sport of MMA (for fun) to skewering the media’s coverage of MMA (for sport).

What right do you, a guy who’s JOB it is to write about MMA, have to criticize other people who are trying to make a few fucking bucks writing 20 times the amount of content that you do? Half the bloggers out there do a BETTER job than the mainstream media does, and that’s without any kind of access or paid expenses, and that’s on top of whatever job and family life they have.

Pardon us for ‘skewering’ people like Kevin Iole when he bends over, takes it from Dana White, and then regurgitates press releases under the guise of a YahooSports ‘news’ piece. For every Dave Meltzer there’s 10 fuckwads who don’t know shit, or maybe they do know shit but they’re just so bad at journalism that everything they write makes them look like they don’t know shit.

You guys are the ones in charge of presenting the sport to a general audience, and I think overall you’re doing a shitty job of it. Your press credentials are supposed to give you the access and the ability to find shit out. But there’s barely been one answer you guys have dug up that bloggers and the average forum users haven’t managed to find out first.

As far as I can tell, most of you just take whatever story the editor tells you to cover and run with it. Writers like Sam Caplan had to start their own fucking blogs because ‘mainstream’ outlets weren’t interested in giving him the webspace or paltry pay neccessary to cover the sport properly.

So from me to you in the spirit of Christmas: fuck all you mainstream guys in your fucking asses. You guys seem too busy patting your own backs to pay attention to why the rest of the MMA community wants to kick your teeth in. You haven’t done shit, you’re not the magical force that’s growing MMA. You’re just corporate patsies that do what you’re told.

“why don’t they just hire people like us?”

If fuckface really understood, the quote should be, “why do they always hire biased, pandering, patronizing nimrods?”

Kevin Iole = Ultimate Yes Man.

  • Jackie Chiles says:

Anyone looking for a last minute Xmas gift for Fightlinker?

I’d like Denny Burkholder, right here tonight. Brought from his happy holiday slumber over there on Melody Lane with all the other rich people and I want him brought right here, with a big ribbon on his head, and I want to look him straight in the eye and I want to tell him what a cheap, lying, no-good, rotten, four-flushing, low-life, snake-licking, dirt-eating, inbred, overstuffed, ignorant, blood-sucking, dog-kissing, brainless, dickless, hopeless, heartless, fat-ass, bug-eyed, stiff-legged, spotty-lipped, worm-headed sack of monkey shit he is. Hallelujah. Holy shit. Where’s the Tylenol?

  • Jackie Chiles says:

In all seriousness though, fuck those guys.

  • scorchamatic says:

fightlinker, you are the lenny bruce of mma when it comes to righteous indignation….except with more heroin, cocaine, and booze. salute!

  • It’ll be interesting to see what happens to the MMA media landscape over the next few years. In other major sports, major media outlets break news because they’re the only ones with access. Right now, MMA is the exact opposite. It’s the regular guys with blogs that have access to fighters, and to some degree, insiders within major organizations. I don’t doubt that a writer from CBS Sportisline could call up just about any fighter he wanted and get some insider news, but it’s the web writers, the ones with established connections, that are in constant contact with the newsmakers. A good web writer with a full Rolodex wouldn’t have to make that call in the first place. Will it stay that way? Fame and money do strange things to people (both fighters and writers).

Anybody catch Liddell & Forrest on the Dennis Miller show last week? It was great to be on a semi-mainstream show (w/zero ratings) but Miller’s questions were absolute garbage. One good thing is that he wasn’t afraid to ask Chuck about getting KTFO by Rampage. He actually had Forrest sit in on a round table discussion about “which sport has the toughest guys”. Forrest was funny, humble & gave a good accounting of himself & MMA. Unlike that arrogant prick Bill Romanowski whose only answer to the question was “every NFL collision is a car crash”. Larry Holmes was on & showed a ton of respect to MMA. Said he could never handle an MMA fight.

  • Jordan Breen says:

Except that Larry Holmes would whip that ass in MMA. I’d love to see Holmes use the flying dropkick he used on Berbick in the cage.

  • Xavier says:

Except for the problem that all the MMA blogs you’re propping are crap, including Craplan and the rest of the nutfaces in the MMA blogosphere. Just because someone doesn’t get paid for their work doesn’t mean it’s automatically more “quality” because it’s done “for the love.”

Most MMA blogs are crap, including the major ones such as and the like. All of them are too in bed with independent companies. MMAjunkie will write nice things about anyone who sends them tickets, Craplan is a proelite shill, etc, etc. You can’t cover something like this well when you’re literally in bed with one of the minor or major players. Each MMA blog I’ve run across is in bed with someone or standing in line to get in bed with one.

The sooner MMA media starts to churn more towards proper quality writers (not MMA fanboys) on major business websites, the better.

  • Accomando says:

“…Each MMA blog I’ve run across is in bed with someone or standing in line to get in bed …”

Linker has been trying to get into GSP’s bed for a while, so your point has merit.

  • Dru Down says:

Xavier, I think you mean “figuratively” in bed. Although in Caplan’s case, you might be right- he and Skala are tight…like REAL tight.

I don’t understand why so many people use the word “literally” like this to strengthen their argument, when all it proves is that they don’t know the meaning of the word.

  • Xavier says:

Ha, I did write literally. That’s retarded. I know the meaning of the word, chalk it up to writing too quickly without proof-reading.

Sam Caplan and Gary Shaw sleep in the same bed each night! Literally! Clong.

  • Dru just had a Mike Sloan moment 😉

  • MMA Fever says:

Burkholder is a tool. Any writer that writes, “(**Raises hand.**)” is a fuckin’ tool poser post-TUF MMA fan. His writing is better than taking sleeping pills except that I usually end up with a keyboard imprint on my face when I try to wade through the absence of hyperbole in his prose.

    This line killed me:

“• was the only major sports website covering MMA. (I love pointing that out.) I was the only MMA writer on staff. We’ve had as many as 10 different writers cover MMA since then, most of them regularly.”

Yeah, they had to hire more staff because his MMA reporting is drier than a geriatric vagina.

  • Dru Down says:

Damn- compared to Mike Sloan- that’s low.

Am I even allowed to post here anymore?

  • umm says:

MMA Fever: Not to mention, a bunch of the mainstream sites were writing about MMA at the time Denny claims was the only one doing so. I seem to remember writing about MMA about a year before Sportsline was.

  • bmiller says:

to Jackie Chiles… BEST POST EVA!!

  • MMANinja says:

Soo…fightlinker… I can’t believe this Kevin Iole’s article title hasn’t been spun off yet
“Silva chomping for prime Chuck ”

Your Iole’s “loves me some dana white” should now include the “chompin” too
