Another fighter is claiming a positive steroids test is the result of a sketchy supplement he took. Cole Province won his fight against Fredson Paixao at WEC 42 last weekend, but lost the common sense sweepstakes by taking the uber-sketchy sounding SOS 500 supplement from Double Dragon Pharmaceuticals after weighing in. At least he admits it though:
“I wasn’t trying to get any super-human strength or anything like that, I just wanted to get some extra water into my muscles,” Province told Sherdog.com.
Province, 28, is convinced the positive test resulted from his use of the supplement SOS 500 from Double Dragon Pharmaceuticals.
The product’s Website carries a warning that states, “If you are a professional or amateur athlete subject to performance enhancing substance testing, do not use this product unless cleared by your sanctioning body as it may cause a false reactive result for a urine or blood drug test.”
“I didn’t know it was banned but, still, with that said, I am responsible,” said Province. “I should have checked into it but I just want to make it clear that I took an over-the-counter supplement, not steroids.”
That “This will make you piss hot” warning is the same kinda warning found on the supplement Antonio Bigfoot Silva was taking as well. Why Province (who claims he didn’t take any other supplements leading up to the fight) would decide to take that then is beyond me, but at least he’s going the “I accidentally took this and I’m guilty” approach rather than the “I accidentally took this and will now pointlessly fight the commission for a year to prove this somehow makes me innocent” way favored by idiots like Sean Sherk and Josh Barnett.
A long long time ago, the UFC had a big get together for all of it’s fighters in an attempt to ‘teach’ them how to be professional fighters. One of the things they talked about was supplements and how to avoid buying tainted ones. It’s not brain surgery: the World Anti-Doping Agency has a list of approved supplements, and if fighters stuck to those they might have a better chance at not melting the cups they’re peeing in. Maybe it’s time for Zuffa to send out another memo or something.
