Don’t suck up the main event

Dana White hates crappy main events. We saw him threaten to fire Anderson Silva if he dicked around in the cage again, so I guess it shouldn’t be much of a surprise that he’s willing to put a sword to Frank Mir’s neck too after what we endured at UFC 119. ESPN reports:

“I have no clue about Frank,” said White, before offering a clue. “To talk the stuff he does, and then fight like he fought, that’s a little frustrating. Once Cro Cop stuffed his takedown attempt, his heart fell out on the floor. If Frank Mir can’t bully you, his heart shrinks to the size of the Grinch’s. If he can’t take you down, his heart shrinks to the size of a pea.”

Might we have seen the last of the 31-year-old Mir, a UFC fighter since 2001, in the Octagon? Could White cut him?

“Sure,” said White, wiping some candor off his chin. “You really, really need to show up and deliver. This is a job.”

This isn’t Dana cutting Frank … he later updated his twitter saying ESPN was ‘being stupid’ and that he said he could fire Mir but made it clear he wouldn’t. But the message is clear: muck up the main event and you’re on very thin ice.

Cro-Cop is every bit as much to blame as Mir. Just because Mir won in the end, that means he gets more shit about it? Whatever.

  • Reverend Clint says:

Really cro cop is a “devastating striker who will kill you with his left high kick” but he didnt strike. He only devastated the audience with his nothingness.

  • Trol says:

I don’t know why he is blaming Mir. Looked like Mir was the only one doing anything in that fight.

  • pewnt says:

You have a valid point Agentsmith, but a little bit narrow focus.

Yes Mir is taking the lions share of the blame for a poor main event.

Cro Cop is in the later end of his career. We will be lucky to see him in 5 more fights. He does not talk much, let alone smack talk.

Frank talked ALOT more aggressive towards what he was going to do to Cro Cop. His Nog’s chin/Brock leg….add a Cro cop body part to the collection talk from the count down show sets an expectation of performance.

If your not going to back up your words (and suffer the repercussions if you don’t )…..keep your mouth shut. Talk about generic fight shit.

  • Omomatta says:

He fucking knocked Mirko out. Yes, it was a lackluster fight. Yes, Mir admitted that he paced himself and that he needs to set a higher pace due to his increasing cardio. Mirko wanted a paycheck. He got his paycheck.

In the same token it’s pointless to talk about Mir. He’s not winning the title again and lets be honest here….he might have 5 fights left, maybe. But, you’re right pwent, he did talk a lot of smack and then danced around like a tentative goon for a couple rounds.

    Listen to BJ Frank….BE FIRST!!!

    Frankie listened why wont Frank1!111!

  • Symbul says:

Dana’s just talking shit to the media to rally some fans. This is just what he does.

I thought it was worse when he started talking about how safe this sport is (this is true – to a point) and how fighters chose this career. Again, that’s true, but it sure shows his colours.

  • Supernatural says:

Jesus, people need to calm down about this main event. It wasn’t the worst thing ever. Have we forgotten about Silva vs. Cote, Leites, Maia, and Sylvia vs. Monson, and Arlovski 3? Those were all title fights, to boot.

This was a 3 round fight between an admittedly under-prepared, past-his-prime Cro Cop and one of the most inconsistent fighters of all time, Mir. What did everyone expect?

Not to mention that it ended by KO, which is a saving grace at least to a degree. If Joe Rogan hadn’t had a stick up his butt complaining the whole time, calling it a sparring match, there would not be such a fuss. Once again, the commentators have implanted ideas into the fans minds.

    Get over it.
