Dana White has been known to throw around some ominous warnings from time to time, but it’s usually directed at lower rung riff-raff, failing TUF stars, and Brandon Vera. But now he’s pulled out the big guns for one of his big stars: Chuck Liddell.
“I’ve made it very clear to Chuck. Very clear,” White told The Canadian Press. “It’s not about money, it’s not about this, that. Chuck is one of my good friends. Chuck (has) cemented his legacy in the UFC and in the fight game. I’m not even saying if he wins, unless he looks incredibly impressive (in Montreal) – I mean, he’s going to have to go out there and dazzle me, for me to want Chuck to still fight.”
“I love him, and I don’t want to see what I saw in his last fight ever again,” he added.
This isn’t the kind of shit that just slips out by accident while you’re on the phone with the Canadian Press. Dana White is sending a clear message to Chuck: you need to do something about all that sucking you’ve been doing lately.
Do I really think Dana will stop using him? From a friendship point of view I don’t doubt that’s what he’d like to do. But from a business point, it would be insane trying to ice the Iceman if he doesn’t want to be iced from the ice fighting. Okay, that pun got out of control. Regardless, that opens the door for one of the UFC’s top stars to go somewhere else (and Dana would NEVER do that). And for every friend who refuses to book you because your brain is slowly getting gonged into pudding, there’s 10 promoters who would literally cut off their balls with a meat cleaver just to have talks with you.
