A lot of people will be asking ‘Where’s Gina’ this weekend. The answer is ‘Who gives a shit where she is, how about asking where Cris Cyborg is?’ At least in that case we’re talking about someone who wants to fight. Unfortunately, Strikeforce hasn’t bothered to re-sign her. Scott Coker addressed the situation earlier this week:
“The answer’s no,” Coker said when asked if there’s any type of contract-status update. “But hopefully soon we’ll come to some type of resolution.”
“It comes down to business,” he said. “It’s probably happened with every single guy in this room at one point or another. It maybe just was under the radar and they weren’t talking to the media like ‘Cyborg’ did. But I don’t blame her. She was frustrated, and we were frustrated.
“But there’s a certain dance the promoter and the athlete do. … And we’re dancing.”
Meanwhile, in Brazil, Cris Cyborg points out the obvious – she’s doing the Pay Me salsa while Strikeforce is doing the We’re Cheapskates shuffle.
You’re the best female fighter on earth and doesn’t fight for almost a year. Does that make you upset?
Absolutely. I’m pretty sad not to be fighting and I’m trying to renegotiate my contract for a year, but Strkeforce doesn’t want to made a deal, they want to keep paying me what they paid before, but now I’m the event’s champion and I’ve never been defeated in Strikeforce. I just wanted to be recognized.
Is it true that you might fight in Brazil?
It’s 99% confirmed. I got this chance to fight in Brazil, and I’m just waiting for Strikeforce to let me go, because they demand you don’t fight in another event for a year after you win the belt. This chance of fighting in Brazil would be awesome, and since I’m going to be released in June from Strikeforce, I’ll have the chance to fight in August, in Santa Catarina, I just don’t know in which event it’ll be, but I’m glad. I can’t stay for that long without fighting otherwise I don’t get any money to pay my bills, because even my sponsors only help me when the events are happening.
Goddamnit, Strikeforce. Get your shit together! Cyborg is
- Your champion
- The best in the world at her weightclass
- Quite possibly the best female fighter in the world, period.
- One of your most popular fighters
As mentioned before, she also did you a huge solid by fighting Gina Carano on the cheap. Now she wants a fair shake and she ain’t getting one. I suppose we shouldn’t be surprised that Zuffa isn’t very interested in investing in women’s MMA, but goddamn. Why would any serious female athletes get into the sport when a fighter of Cris Cyborg’s stature and skills can’t even get paid?
