Cris Cyborg is still in contractual limbo

A lot of people will be asking ‘Where’s Gina’ this weekend. The answer is ‘Who gives a shit where she is, how about asking where Cris Cyborg is?’ At least in that case we’re talking about someone who wants to fight. Unfortunately, Strikeforce hasn’t bothered to re-sign her. Scott Coker addressed the situation earlier this week:

“The answer’s no,” Coker said when asked if there’s any type of contract-status update. “But hopefully soon we’ll come to some type of resolution.”

“It comes down to business,” he said. “It’s probably happened with every single guy in this room at one point or another. It maybe just was under the radar and they weren’t talking to the media like ‘Cyborg’ did. But I don’t blame her. She was frustrated, and we were frustrated.

“But there’s a certain dance the promoter and the athlete do. … And we’re dancing.”

Meanwhile, in Brazil, Cris Cyborg points out the obvious – she’s doing the Pay Me salsa while Strikeforce is doing the We’re Cheapskates shuffle.

You’re the best female fighter on earth and doesn’t fight for almost a year. Does that make you upset?
Absolutely. I’m pretty sad not to be fighting and I’m trying to renegotiate my contract for a year, but Strkeforce doesn’t want to made a deal, they want to keep paying me what they paid before, but now I’m the event’s champion and I’ve never been defeated in Strikeforce. I just wanted to be recognized.

Is it true that you might fight in Brazil?
It’s 99% confirmed. I got this chance to fight in Brazil, and I’m just waiting for Strikeforce to let me go, because they demand you don’t fight in another event for a year after you win the belt. This chance of fighting in Brazil would be awesome, and since I’m going to be released in June from Strikeforce, I’ll have the chance to fight in August, in Santa Catarina, I just don’t know in which event it’ll be, but I’m glad. I can’t stay for that long without fighting otherwise I don’t get any money to pay my bills, because even my sponsors only help me when the events are happening.

Goddamnit, Strikeforce. Get your shit together! Cyborg is

  • Your champion
  • The best in the world at her weightclass
  • Quite possibly the best female fighter in the world, period.
  • One of your most popular fighters

As mentioned before, she also did you a huge solid by fighting Gina Carano on the cheap. Now she wants a fair shake and she ain’t getting one. I suppose we shouldn’t be surprised that Zuffa isn’t very interested in investing in women’s MMA, but goddamn. Why would any serious female athletes get into the sport when a fighter of Cris Cyborg’s stature and skills can’t even get paid?

  • agentsmith says:

She got $35K (15+15+5) for her last fight.  Yeah, that’s pretty low.

  • glassjawsh says:

at she’s not “not getting paid” in the way that FEG doesn’t pay their fighters

  • Symbul says:

They’d find a way to make it work if she was the champion of a real division. There’s noone for her to fight.

  • fightlinker says:

Trevor Prangley had a 15 + 15 deal with Strikeforce.

  • Letibleu says:

I think its because she is Brazilian.

  • fightlinker says:

I think it’s because no one wants to put a penis inside her. If she was Carano hot, she’d make Carano money.

  • DSPTomK says:

I’m all for her getting paid more, but since the Carano fight, she’s sat out for more money, while our memories of her tearing Gina apart slowly fade away.  Her profile shrinks at a precarious time for women’s MMA with Zuffa now owning the MMA world.  I think it would have been smarter to fight, stay in the spotlight, kick enough ass to help justify Zuffa keeping her around (if not only just paying her more).

  • Symbul says:

Stay and fight who? The next 2-1 victim nobody’s ever heard of besides animals like us who only know remember them for their spank bank?

  • SST says:

She should fight Daley for the vacant WW belt.

  • DJ ThunderElbows says:

So fucked up.  If I understand correctly, they let her contract expire, then decided to keep her on unpaid with their bullshit champions clause to coerce her into signing for shit instead of releasing her so she could earn a living.  Coker’s a cunt.

But this is a boys business, and I recall Shaw even low-balled Gina when she was his biggest drawing fighter.

    15 + 15, that’s Benavidez in the WEC money.

  • SHORT_BUS says:

Women’s MMA is a joke. She’s not going to make top dollar because there’s not enough interest and there’s nobody for her to fight.

  • Billytk says:

It may be sad but the truth is unless you look like Gina Carano, Miesha Tate, Michelle Waterson etc. there’s not interest from casual fans and thus no money to be made so no company is going to pay big bucks for WMMA competitor no matter how talented the fighter if she looks more like a champ in the male divisons.

  • glassjawsh says:

    ^ this.

    “sorry bout your face!”

  • Slappy san says:

    Unfucking believable.

  • Letibleu says:

    So she has no chance?

  • Billytk says:

I just threw up in my mouth… still more feminine looking then cyborg though

  • Slappy san says:

You’re so wrong for this pic.

  • iamphoenix says:

i can see the beautiful soul.

  • CAP says:

    no chance.
