Country Boy Can’t Survive

No amount of “>Xyience or country breakfasts can help Matt

BJ Penn vs Jon “Dry Hump” Fitch in Australia… I’m down with that. Then again BJ’s Achilles HEEL might be boring fighters: Edgar x2, GSP X2, Machida.

  • P W says:

Can’t we match up BJ with someone who’s at least a tiny bit exciting? The two fights BJ had against Edgar nearly put me in a coma out of boredom. I’m not sure if I’m ready for another snoozer so soon.

  • Reverend Clint says:

“Dry hump” or “Anti-Florian”… which is a better nickname?

  • scissors61 says:

    BJ’s gonna make him fight.

  • GoldenArms says:

Penn fights flat footed, that’s why he lost to edgar. gsp and machida are too big for him. fitch vs penn is just a stupid waste of time. they need to let fitch sign with strikeforce.

  • Jim says:

lol @ Hughes jab. Seriously, that’s the worse attempted jab I’ve seen in years.

  • glassjawsh says:

id bet anyone 4 dollars that hughes retires in the next 2 weeks. that or a hallman fight to end his career on a meh high note

  • Komodo says:

Favorite moment of the whole event right there. Fuck yeah.

Also, Revr’n… “Dry Hump” was the best choice. Nicely done.

  • YEAH RIGHT says:

Goldenshower-Why’d you throw machida in there?

Glassdildo-I agree. He shoulda hung em up a few years back. He hasn’t looked like his old self since he was his old self. And this is coming from a Hughes fan. Man, I still remember when he was the man at 70. I’m too damn young to be recollecting about the old days.

  • subo says:

“they need to let Fitch sign with Strikeforce”

totally – Fedor needs someone to fight

If boring fighters spelled doom for BJ, would he have won last night?

  • Reverend Clint says:

this is the new dumb matt hughes who took a page out of Sherks play book

  • Reverend Clint says:

  • Schrute Boxe says:

one would figure that you could do a spell check for a two-sentence post.

  • Reverend Clint says:

one might figure a dick face like you might come up with something more interesting to comment on other than my spelling mistake.

  • SST says:

Hughes’ hunting buddies are laughing their asses off. Take that for flaking on us Matt!

  • Blackula Jonez says:

Yeah Right – Penn fought a heavyweight Machida and lost during his wandering Jew years outside the UFC

And I personally thought the second Edgar vs Penn fight was a boxing for mma clinic similar to the Diaz/Noons rematch.

The only thing more brutal than BJ’s KO was what Sergio Martinez did to Paul Williams

I though Williams was dead for a min.

  • YEAH RIGHT says:

I know, but i thought he was talking about possible future match-ups.

And the difference between penn/frankie and diaz/noons, is that diaz/noons was actually fun to watch.

And shit, that fight was a perfect sequel to their dope ass first fight. Instaclassic.

  • MaaFaka says:

i pity the fools who label the penn/edgar bouts as “boring” ( especially # 2 ) they should stick to and leave combat sports alone…

  • blogger123 says:

wow i liked it ,this is really cool video.

  • P W says:

MaaFaka: No need for your pity, thank you very much. However I am just a tiny bit jealous of those who are so easy to impress.

  • frickshun says:

PW–>coming from a boxing background, I tend to have more “patience”. It’s like watching a great pitcher’s duel in baseball. The action is in their surgical precision & almost 6th sense for choosing pitches.

But if I’m not in the mood, IT’S FUCKING BORING. Maybe b/c I enjoy technical fights EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE, I can get over 1 fight lacking in serious action.

Besides, look what happened to Paul Williams when he decided to slug it out w/Martinez……..DARKNESS.

  • Blackula Jonez says:

Easy to impress wtf are you talking about, frankie edgars second peformance against penn was pugulistic brilliance. We are not here to watch bar brawls we are here to watch hand to hand combat at the highest level.

Seeing how quickly Penn murked Hughes reinforces the technical brilliance of Edgar. Boxing in in its purest form isn’t just some one getting knocked out: it is the art of hitting and not getting hit in return.

I can appreciate the a dismantling of a game opponent (pacman landing a six punch combo through margacheatos sheild block) the same way everyone loves an emphatic finish (martinez timing williams punch and low hands so he can throw a counter power punch WITHOUT LOOKING AT HIS OPPONENT, but still leaning to his body to the right so his left hook will land at max power) .

When BJ batters and finishes Fitch in Oz next year all it will do is reinforce Edgars mastery and adaptation of the sweet science for mma. Please Believe.

  • Reverend Clint says:

^ or maybe Edgar just has BJ’s number. You cant say Dennis Halman is a better fighter than Matt Hughes but he sure has his number.

  • frickshun says:

^^You think they talk a lot?

  • Blackula Jonez says:

    He had his number

    He just got caught

He got hit with a lucky punch

…sounds like a bunch of excuses to me, but you can make the argument that there are some bad/insurmountable style match ups out there.

Even if Hallman and Hughes fought again and Hughes won he would still be 1 for 3, hell now that I think about it Hughes has been on the wrong end both his trilogies between GSP and BJ.

  • subo says:

Edgar is a better 155er than BJ Penn and anyone bored by their second fight should be placed on an ice floe.

  • P W says:

“Easy to impress wtf are you talking about, frankie edgars second peformance against penn was pugulistic brilliance. We are not here to watch bar brawls we are here to watch hand to hand combat at the highest level.”

You’re just making my case stronger by bombastically calling Edgar’s fighting “pugilistic brilliance”. I don’t need your stand-up appreciation 101 course. What makes you think I want to watch brawls? I’m not even remotely interested in that type of fighting. I’m an avid Chris Leben-hater.

  • P W says:

“…anyone bored by their second fight should be placed on an ice floe.”

I have three simple criteria for what constitutes a good MMA fight, and that particular fight scored on only one of those.

  • GoldenArms says:

frankie edgar is boring. who cares about a guy who throws a jab and runs away. edgar vs maynard is going to be the worst championship fight of all time. itll be like reading a subo post

  • Reverend Clint says:

a good fight to me is one i either dont want to leave the room during or show my friends. Bj vs frankie 1 and 2 it on the opposite end of the spectrum. Id be ashamed to show that fight to a mma noob.
This is fucking MIXED martial arts not jabbing n jogging. Grantef his stratagy was impressive id rather watch two guy who are in there only to box cause then i know what to expect. Its the same problem i have with boring wrestlers… If i wanted to watch a guy dominate and grope some poor guy for up to 25 minutes id sit outside subos window on a friday night.

  • subo says:

Frankie landed 38 power strikes on BJ’s noggin.

That fight didn’t bore me even a little bit. It was a 155er tooling BJ Penn on the feet.

  • Blackula Jonez says:

I like how Frankie is seen as some kind of hack or coward for not planting his feet in front of BJ and turning the fight into a slug fest.

We are talking about the same Penn, a natural lightweight who has won a welterweight title and even fought a heavyweight Machida AND HAS NEVER BEEN DROPPED/KNOCKED DOWN IN HIS PROFESSIONAL CAREER!!!

Edgar vs Penn 2 is the first fight I would show a skeptical boxing fan who thinks that these UFC guys don’t know how to box.
