Clay Guida is underpaid

The pay info for the TUF6 finale has been released and it looks like the big loser on this event was Clay Guida, who was paid a whole $3000 more than the virgins who starred on the show. Pay for this season’s crop of TUF fighters is 8k to fight and 8k to win. Guida got 11k to fight with 11k to win.

I’m always amazed that the UFC doesn’t pay more for main event status … sure, it’s a slippery slope down to boxing pay where fighters get paid more depending on what order their fight is in or who they’re fighting. But it just seems embarrassing that the fighters headlining these things wouldn’t be able to afford a 30 second commercial on the show they’re fighting for.

I can only cross my fingers and hope Guida’s going to get a fat bonus and a nice raise soon so he can afford to a) get a haircut and b) get some better training partners to sharpen his skills.

He did get a fight of the Night bonus to in 40k add that to 11k and his sponsership deal’s = not a bad payday at all. So why are you complaining? But yes he probaly should make more than 11k a fight. Maybe 25k.

  • dandeman says:

Is the fight of the night bonus 50K or something like that? Was the Clay and Huerta Match named fight of the night or was it the J roc and Warmachine match?

  • dandeman says:

Answered before I sent the q, thanks Andre J

  • I haven’t read anywhere that Guida/Huerta got fight of the night.

And to pay Guida 3k more than guys who have like 3-4 real fights and are just starting out = lame

  • Accomando says:

Agreed, I’m all for a wage increase for Carpenters.

  • j says:

    Maybe UFC pays per pound.

  • Lifer says:

carpenter’s union needs to get it’s ass in gear. guida to strike!

  • dignan says:

I can’t believe that all the TUF guys got equal pay for the fight + win. The finalists made as much as the chumps? Weak.

  • Cut the hair? No way… then we won’t hear from opponents stating that they thought they were being mauled by a lion.

  • Drehog says:

Clay gets paid according to the contract he signed, just like all the TUF guys. I’m sure once his contract comes up for renewal (if not sooner) he’ll be rewarded w/ better pay.

Then again, he is only 2-3 in the UFC

  • kentyman says:

I’m surprised you didn’t comment on Goulet getting the worst deal out of all of them with 7k/7k.

  • Thomas says:

Underpaid.. Yes. When you take into account all the wars Guida has been in. Also the fact that he makes almost any fights he’s in exciting should get him extra pay. But we dont live in a perfect world. You get the deal you or your agent negotiates for. You guys should blame Guida or his agent for his low pay. If you owned a business and could get a way with paying someone less and keeping more money for yourself most probably would.

  • MMAStation says:

Guida for sure didnt get paid much, but it all boils down to what he negotiated. Surely he is a guy they will keep no matter his record in the UFC with the 5 exciting fights he has put on. He should get an increase soon.

  • MMAStation says:

    kentyman,

I was surprised to see Goulet fighting for that amount too.

  • RoB says:

i agree completely. he definitely made alot of fans in that fight though. everybody i know was talkin about guida not huerta after the fight.

  • Thomas says:

Guida not Huerta was the one that got my energy level up before the fight. The Way he came down all crazy looking like a crazy caveman/hippy hybrid. Jumping. Is corner beating on him before he came in the ring.

  • MacDaddy says:

I like Clay’s teen wolf look.

  • igorpunck says:

    Totally underpaid!
What is the source for fight of the night bonus? Most of Guida’s fights had beed spectacular. Aside from locker room bonuses, Guida deserves way more. Freaking Roman got paid more than Guida, this is not right.

  • Tommy says:

He is an exciting fighter to watch who definitely puts it all on the line. Hopefully he will get fight of the night bonus as well, he deserves it. However he really is just a glorified loser. He has lost 3 out of his last 4 fights with his one victory coming by way of split decision. Lets face it, with that type of record, if it was anyone else or he was less exciting to watch lose he’d be out the door already, not asking for more money.

  • Iain says:

I agree with the above concensus re Jonathan Goulet. On a show everyone is earning 8+8, it just seems like an unnecessary slap in the face to offer him 7+7.

It’s a minimal difference and as he won his fight so presumably took home around 14k (more than he’s probably worth as a fighter) but it seems an odd gesture all the same.

  • Iain says:

“Lets face it, with that type of record, if it was anyone else or he was less exciting to watch lose he’d be out the door already, not asking for more money.”

He isn’t asking for more money as far as we know, is he?

One of the reasons other fighters seem to have a little less respect for the TUF fighters. Feel like they havent paid their dues and get shoved in the limelight with little experience. But that feeling as evaporated some with some of the early TUF guys making names for themselves.

  • MMA Fever says:

    A little less than Keith Jardine’s $14,000 pittance against Chuck Liddell’s 500K salary @ UFC 76.

  • frickshun says:

I saw his pay right b4 I came to FL. You read my mind about this. He has fought top guys in the division & deserves more. But, he is working under a pre-existing non-negotiable contract so all this does is increase his leverage for the next contract. Unfortunately, he lost this fight so it will work against him. I’m guessing he will only get 10-15k more in his next contract. UFC is very good @ putting fighters in a position where they make just enough to feel compelled to stay put. Plus the publicity of being w/UFC brings much more sponsorship opportunity.

  • Jersey Tomato says:

He’s underpaid but his grooming costs are nil, so it probably balances out in the end.

Guida is a beast and great fighter to watch.

To # 19 above, he is hardly a glorified loser. In Japan, fighters are embraced by fans not on the basis of wins or losses, but on the warrior mentality they bring into the ring and the courage they display in competition. Guida’s gutsy performance is something that all fight fans should appreciate and respect. He may have lost the fight but he won me over as a competitor.

  • Boshy Claus says:

    Awwwwwwwww……

  • Accomando says:

Following with what the tomato said, In most peoples opinions, Guida BEAT Tyson Griffin, and Din Thomas barely took a decision. One must take into account the way the “defeat” happened. Guida is no glorified loser, he is a Manimal who deserves all the praise & money he gets.

  • godzillad says:

Guida is still on his original six fight contract I believe.

  • godzillad says:

So instead of rewriting it they just have Dana toss him a fat check.

  • Cyrus says:

Boshy, go fuck yourself.. Awww? AWW GO FUCK YOURSELF, HO.

  • Xavier says:

Underpaid? Well, that’s why you win.

Win bonuses make the sport stay competitive, unlike boxing where you have slouches like Riddick Bowe walk through and make millions without caring. If boxing worked like MMA, guys like Bowe would never have stopped training and stopped caring.

  • Tommy says:

He is an animal, just too stupid to figure out a way to actually Finish the fight. Don’t matter if you win the first two rounds if you allow the other guy the chance to come back and finish your ass, and he does. I said months ago he wouldn’t be smart enough to figure out a way to finish Roger before Roger figured out a way to finish him. Regardless of what led up to that point in the fight. Linker could tell you this because it was him I was saying it to. Plus Roger kept giving up dominate positions looking for a way to finish it, that’s more then you can say for most champions who are happy to just lay there in a dominant position just to win the round.

  • RoB says:

…….”Plus Roger kept giving up dominate positions looking for a way to finish it, that’s more then you can say for most champions who are happy to just lay there in a dominant position just to win the round.”…. ………. completely agree. I would mention Sherk but he is not a champ.

  • Accomando says:

    A) Guida DID win the fight of the night bonus

    B) He made out pretty good with this fight cause being the headliner helps with sponsors and the amount of dollars they make.

    C) The 11,000 base paycheck was no where near the amount he made for this fight.
