Chuck Liddell is right about Kimbo

For someone who’s supposed to be a total badass, Kimbo Slice is pretty damn thin skinned. Actually, come to think about it, that’s a rather tame assessment coming from us, so I’ll rephrase: Kimbo Slice is a bleeding vagina when it comes to taking criticism. There, that sounds more like it.

I say this because mister Slice is not reacting well to some statements made by Chuck Liddell a few days ago. Chucky-boy basically said that Kimbo:

1) Is unproven against a real opponent
2) Has no ground game
3) Is being hyped up
4) Isn’t a good ambassador for MMA (in so many words)

This has made our bearded friend more than a little peeved. He’s now claiming that if the trash talk continues, he’ll need to “lay the smackdown” on ol’ Chucky. This has prompted me, the occasional writer, to put up a post asking this very basic question to Mr. Slice: Just how exactly is Chuck Liddell’s statement wrong?

For starters, Kimbo has to know that the reason he’s famous is because of some of his felony fights on Youtube. Sure, training with Bas Rutten wins you some legitimacy points, but that doesn’t give you insta-cred. Who’s the last champion to come out of Rutten’s stable? Training doesn’t work through osmosis – just look at all the average fighters coming out of BJ Penn and Fedor’s camps. So Kimbo will have to prove that he can apply what Bas has taught him against some decent opposition before he can cash in those points. And last time I checked, none of the homeless idiots he knocked out have ever been heard of again, and the guys that he has fought in ‘legitimate’ MMA were all really hand picked to build Kimbo up.

Now, Chuck Liddell has been around the block. He’s paid a serious amount of dues that Kimbo simply hasn’t, and he’s beaten   some of the best fighters in the world. I don’t even get the feeling that he’s trying to talk smack simply for the hell of it. This is a man who takes his sport seriously, and to have a street fighter come in and be called “The Next Big Thing in MMA” so prematurely is a slap in the face to all those guys who have been through the grinder for years and years. So I understand his frustration.

For all we know, maybe Kimbo does have a ground game. Maybe he is the next big thing. But until EliteXC has enough faith in him to stop throwing him glass jaw motherfuckers, we won’t know that. So my advice to Kimbo is to have a coke and a smile, and shut the fuck up. It’s natural that people will doubt you when you’re unproven. That’s why you take real fights with real champions to silence them. You don’t track them to their gym and throw down.

That’s what a thug does, guy.

  • Swedish guy says:

Eehrm, this is gonna come off as racist but… we really need to see Kimbo face Rampage. Battle of the knowhaamsayn.

  • FRANKIE says:

I’d rather see Kimbo train with Rampage and then kick the shit out of Chuck.

  • RoB says:

i really dont see anything wrong with kimbo’s response. its not like he has been going around talkin about how he could beat fedor or randy or big nog or any of the top fighters.

  • Lifer says:

this makes me wonder if chuck considers himself an appropriate ambassador..? party on, chuck!

  • Gina's boy toy says:

Until Chuck and Kimbo ever fight we’ll never really know what would happen. But I do think Liddell is right about somethings he says about Kimbo.

  • #1 Jackal says:

chuck would destroy kimbo, it wouldn’t be a good fight. guys that chuck has beat such as horn, babalu, wandy, randy, tito, would all destroy kimbo.

    your not my guy, buddy.

  • dulljake says:

    You’re not my buddy, guy!

  • j says:

Chuck’s just pissed that Kimbo makes $200,000 a fight in EliteXC while he has to make do with $500,000 for hard fights in the UFC.

  • Denton says:

It’s only for exposure, it can only be good for him if Chuck responds to this.

And another article thats dead fucking on, goddammit how do you do it?

  • BossTweed says:

I don’t see what was wrong with what Kimbo was saying. He’s hyping a feud, not like that’s never been done before. The fight will probably never happen, but who cares, any attention is good attention.

  • Captain says:

Next time motherfucker calls, tell him I said, “Suck my dick.” Jello puddin-eatin motherfucker.

  • dulljake says:

I don’t write articles very often! Guess I’m only a part time MMA enthusiast, eh?

  • Hanzo Hattori says:

I bet Chuck has fought all his fights with a hangover that comes when you mix ridiculously hot chicks and alcohol

  • kentyman says:

Chuck Liddell: The fighter who dreads the piss test not because of steroids, but because it burns when he pees.

  • x5BoltMainx says:

    I’m not your guy, friend.

Damn, I was going to give Ryan props for this article & then I see that Jake wrote it :(

  • Dr. Gonzo says:

Bas said on InsideMMA that he picks Kimbo’s opponents. Gary Shaw just makes the big mistake of putting him in the main event over Lawler.

  • kentyman says:

You can give Ryan props for the next comic when it comes out.

  • I’m not in complete agreeance that we need to downgrade Kimbo’s whole aura because Chuck states the obvious. Kimbo still has a lot of time to progress this year, and if he beats anyone legitimate, he may move toward the UFC.

We all know how hype works, and starting the shit talking now will only make the fight grab up more viewers if Kimbo legitimately beats a decent heavyweight in stunning fashion. It’s a bunch of what-ifs, but you’re forgetting the one huge payoff for Kimbo. Shit talking has always, and will always, produce huge fights when you include someone like Chuck Liddell or Tito Ortiz. It’s worked in the past.

  • DumbOut! says:

I dont think he was outta line. People talk shit about him all the time, and when he fires back a little bit panties get into a twist.

    War Kimbo!

  • Mister Akme says:

    Kimbo never fought for FelonyFights…duh

  • operator says:

Kimbo gets alot of heat but he isn’t the one going around talking like he is the best. He’s getting pushed in the EXC and yeah he hasn’t earned it but I won’t hate on the guy until he starts turning down fights against legitimate competition. Personally I can’t blame the guy for taking shitloads of money to fight chumps and I’m sure any fighter who is up and coming would trade shoes with him any day.

  • danaunclefesterwhite says:

I think Chuck’s criticism is justified. When was the last time you’ve seen a n00b in boxing get hyped up like Kimbo? Seriously. Al though boxing gets a lot of shit for having 17 weight classes, 4 different sanctioning bodies, corrupt promoters, a lot of boring fighters, shitty undercards, fighters being protected and champions ducking other top fighters *cough*Mayweather*cough*, at least boxing promoters don’t make the sport look like a joke as much as EliteXC does. Even the UFC pushes it a bit. Where is boxing’s equivalent of Kimbo Slice or Brock Lesnar? I like watching these guys but MMA has to start operating in a more professional manner in order for the sport to be taken seriously. You have to balance short-term reward with considerations of long-term reward.

Did you guys notice that right before the Tarver-Woods championship fight on Showtime boxing they showed Kimbo Slice being interviewed and the audience completely BOOED him? That says enough about how much non-MMA fans think about Kimbo Slice’s legitimacy as a competitor. I think that is an indication that EliteXC needs a lot of luck to bank on Kimbo Slice drawing in new fans on CBS.

  • Aaron says:

    I’m not your friend, buddy!

Kimbo sees trash talk, thinks it’s time to turn the hype on. I wouldn’t put it past Gary Shaw to be tellin him to go a bit further. I like watching Kimbos fight, but he really does represent what I don’t like in MMA. I also feel like he may never have a competent ground game, and am looking forward to that side of his skillset being exposed. I feel Kimbo has a way to go yet, so they’ll just keep throwin him cans. I also feel like some eats. Maybe I feel like chicken tonight?

Oh, and thanks for ending with “That’s what a thug does, guy”.

Such an honest statement, so innocent sounding. I picture it being said in nasal falsetto.

  • x5BoltMainx says:

    I’m not you buddy, guy!

I think the main reason people dislike Kimbo is because they make him the main event. Where as the UFC hyped Brock Lesnar, but they didn’t make him the main event. Championship fights are suppose to be the main event (Robbie Lawlers fight), not watching a can get creamed under a minute.

  • danaunclefesterwhite says:

Lesnar wasn’t the main event technically but they hyped him more than Nogueira and Sylvia combined. He was the main attraction, what with most of the 600,000 buying the PPV to see Lesnar. As great of a draw Lesnar is in the short-term, this reflects badly on our sport. Name one 1-0 pro boxer that was hyped like that and then put in the co-main event? It may be good business in the short term but in the long-term, this wasn’t a good idea. A 1-0/2-0 fighter shouldn’t be made your main attraction if you want to legitimize your image as the premier fighting league. Compared to football, baseball, basketball, hockey and most importantly boxing, this kind of thing makes MMA look like an illegitimate joke sport.

I still consider the Kimbo Slice situation to be a lot worse though. Because this guy is going to be on CBS and when all those uninitiated fans tune in to CBS and see that the promotion’s main attraction is a 2-0 street fighter who is fed unskilled brawlers with glass chins, it’s going to make a mockery of the sport. I’m not a purist, I believe unmarketable guys like Matt Lindland are dead weight in that they ask more much more money than they are really worth. But if you want your product to be accepted as a legitimate sport in the USA, you need a guy who is not only charismatic (and usually American. The top boxing stars in the US were mostly all American) but also a guy who has proven himself competitively at the top level.

  • klabs says:

Kimbo is Ok, but seriously it’s retarded for random people on the streets to say kimbo is the best mma fighter when they only got into the sport 1 day ago. Kimbo is an average fighter at best.

Gary shaw is an ashole, I’m not a hater I just have an opinion , why you all want us to step in Line and say KIMBO is legit?

KImbo is not a TOP ten HEavyweight he fought cans. BO cantrel and Tank abbot have LOSING records.

Now elitexc Gives him a guy like thompson WHO IS WIDELY KNOWN TO HAVE A GLASS CHIN.

so Kimbo beats thompson then what? we have more retards saying kimbo is the best fighter.

Fact is he has to FIGHT top tier opponents for people to actually respect him. With the fame comes less fame. US So called haters are the less fame he is getting.

Here are the top tier he has to beat in order to be acepted as a legit contendor

    1. Fedor Emelianenko
    2. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira
    3. Randy Couture
    4. Tim Sylvia
    5. Andrei Arlovski
    6. Fabricio Werdum
    7. Gabriel Gonzaga
    8. Cheick Kongo
    9. Mirko Filipovic
    10. Ben Rothwell

those guys up top are heavies fight heavies KImbo not LW’s

once he beats them then i will respect him.
