Chael Sonnen ‘suspended’

(This is a re-post of the video we made of Chael back in 2009 after he was insta-subbed by Demian Maia. Can’t fault him for loving Dana White, because Dana White apparently loves Chael right back.)

Dana White has stuck with Chael Sonnen through a lot of shit – Chael crossed the line several times with all sorts of amusing but racist shit (most recently to Wanderlei Silva: “If it wasn’t for me, you would be thrashing around the jungle w/a blowgun trying’ to catch breakfast”), stuff about Lance Armstrong deserving cancer, and then there was that sketchy steroid situation where he failed to properly disclose his shady prescription for testosterone replacement therapy.

But that’s all just part of the wacky package that is Chael Sonnen. Apparently, getting convicted of money laundering was the last straw … well, not really. The UFC has finally decided they need to do something, lest one of the many shit piles Chael created really hits the fan sometime over the next few months. They havn’t fired him outright (being an epic suck up and selling 600k ppvs might have helped), but they’ve frozen his contract and basically suspended him. Here’s Dana’s comment to TMZ:

“Chael Sonnen has gone through a lot in the last few months and we think it’s important for him to focus on getting his personal life together before focusing on his career in the UFC.”

White adds, “I spoke with Chael earlier today and he agrees that setting priorities in his life is the best thing for him right now. I sincerely hope Chael is able to straighten out his personal life.”

Chael was originally supposed to face Sexyama at UFC 128, which coincidentally was a week before he was set to be sentenced in the case. A case like this can result in up to a half million in fines and 20 years in jail, but Chael has cut a deal where he’ll lose his realtor’s license and pay a 10 grand fine. That’s even less than the 70k he fucking laundered … I wonder who he’s snitching out for that.

There’s a lesson to be learned in all this, kids: white collar crime is the way to go.

I would like to see this “frozen contract” be at least 6 months. It is a non-violent crime, but I thinks that he should still be “punished” just to keep in line with past suspensions.

  • Mixed Martial Adam says:

It’s pretty shocking that the UFC would still want to associate with him at this point. He’s not an exciting fighter and his “shit talk/lies” won’t have close to the same appeal now that they’ll be coming from a convicted sleazebag. Chael Sonnen the character is funny, but when that lying, delusional piece of shit character is proven to be real it’s not nearly as entertaining. This conviction has to destroy his appeal to at least the Hardcore and other literate fans.

In addition, having Chael in the organization will have to garner some negative press when he returns to fight. It may not be national news, but white collar criminal back cage fighting has to be newsworthy in Oregon and elsewhere. After all, he’ll be paying his fine with UFC money now that his Realtor’s license is gone. It just doesn’t look good for the company and I would think that the negatives of keeping him around would outweigh any positives at this point.

…and FINALLY – he’s a cowardly rat. Any bravado he claims to have in the cage is just smoke and mirrors now. The dude can’t face up to his steroid suspension and now he’s choosing to turn “state’s evidence” and send his business partners to prison instead of owning up to his own crimes. Who wants to see a punk like that wrestling in the number one MMA organization in the world?

(*note – I’d sing too if I was facing 20 years, but I’d understand my place as a piece of shit, coward rat and accept it willingly)

  • Jim says:

    I love Chael Sonnen.

  • iamphoenix says:

    i couldn’t care less.

  • Rodriguez says:

I support Sonnen. I know I’ve wanted to fuck over some of those greedy insurance companies before, especially the ones involved in the housing market. The guy’s a hero to me now.

  • P W says:

Rodriguez: You are aware that real estate agents blow insurance companies out of the water when it comes to sheer slimeballiness? God damn I hate them from the bottom of my heart.

  • iamphoenix says:

yeah but i bet he’s not gonna rewrite his joke just for you.

  • Rodriguez says:

I don’t know anyone who’s bought a house from Chael Sonnen, so whatever.

  • Reem.Hadouken says:

    Should be cut.

    Fuck this ass clown.

  • Billytk says:

The only time I’ve enjoyed a Sonnen fight is when he kicked anderson’s ass but I do support him here since the UFC shouldn’t be suspending a athlete (if they want to be considered a real sport) for something that has absolutely nothing to do with them or their “sport” hell in other sports athletes get arrested for assault and or murder without the league feeling the need to supersede the courts punishments as a matter of fact even in the UFC there are fighters charged with way more serious offenses (rape, assault etc.) who are still booked to fight IMO they have no right to step in here.

  • FiveBoltMain says:

Michael Vic, Pac Man Jones, & Ben Rothlisberger, what do they have in common? The NFL suspended them for non football related incidents. So is the NFL not a real sport since they suspend these players (and other players)?

The UFC is doing damage control and letting Sonnen know that he’s walking on thin ice. If he screws up again, then we’ll see if the UFC was bluffing or not.

  • Kellen69 says:

Rampage fight after he went on a hit and run spree and then “caused” a women to miscarriage. Neer fought after a dwi conviction. Leben????
It isn’t too far off with sonnen. He didn’t almost kill someone.

  • MAYORofKALI says:

Hilarious clip, missed it last year… “I love Fightlinker!”

  • Jim says:

There’s no point discussing morals. Chael Sonnen is crazy(just watch the video).
I’m sure he rationalized that he was doing the loan officer a favor by bumping up the $ on the mortgage.

Also, his ‘cut’ from the crime was 3K(I think).
His punishment is: 10K fine, losing his realtor licence & also has to rat out his buddies.
How the fuck is that lenient.
You can’t give him extra punishment just because he’s worked incredibly hard, and has fighting to fall back on.

  • Reverend Clint says:

if given the chance i would seriously do the same damn thing

  • SST says:

Verbal cock sucking is always repulsive.

  • Reem.Hadouken says:

I can understand people sticking up for him if he was a good fighter… but he isn’t.

He’s a lay’n’pray pillow fist with no sub defense who talks more than he fights.

I bet A. Silvas Elbow woulda KO’d him if he hadn’t been on roids.

  • glassjawsh says:

damnit butters you beat me to it

  • agentsmith says:

    Goddamn that video is pathetic.

  • G Funk says:

How did he fuck an insurance company? It was mortgage fraud! Housing insurance covers physical damages, homeowners liability with regards to physical injuries, exc. They don’t cover fraud.

  • agentsmith says:

Plus, it was initially reported as being a “straw man” fake buyer scam, but now it’s sounding more like it was just a payoff to sweeten the deal for a legit buyer, meaning it wasn’t fraud at all. If that’s true, all Chael is guilty of is passing the “sweetener” money through his mom’s plumbing company and on to the buyer. That’s pretty low-level money laundering, and a far cry from the ripoff scam that we initially thought it was.

Doesn’t really make him a criminal in my eyes. But I still hate him.

  • NinjaCodah says:

Sounds more like sketchy tax evasion scheme than anything else. The guy is guilty of something, but i don’t see how it should prevent him from fighting in the UFC.

What? The dude save another dude some money and suddenly he becomes the reason why the economy collapsed? You’re retarded! Guys like Lorenzo and Dana probably save more money than you’ll ever see in your lifetime, every single year, through sketchy but legal tax evasion schemes. That’s what rich people do all the time.

Many people are still butt-hurt over the fact that Chael made Anderson Silva his octagon bitch for 20mins.

  • agentsmith says:

Oh he made him his bitch alright… if by that you mean dry-humping Silva for 4.5 rounds.

  • frickshun says:

Please Agent, he fucking smacked him around pretty damn good.

  • agentsmith says:

    No, he Jon Fitch’d him.

  • Jim says:

Seriously, some of you people are fucking dumb.
No it wasn’t fucking tax evasion, nor was it “dude save another dude some money”.
Yes it was fraud, with Chaels doing the money laundering part.

Does it make him a bad person?
If I didn’t think I’d get caught, I’d be defrauding like a motherfucker. As would everyone.

  • agentsmith says:

    Oy vey!

  • Jim says:

Fake outrage is funny. NinjaCodah & agentsmith would do the exact same thing, only I guess they’d re-phase it as helping people? Or saving people money? Your’d make great politicians.

  • agentsmith says:

I dunno, if a real estate agent was willing to launder money in order to give me a nearly $70K kickback to encourage me to buy a house… I’m pretty sure I’d consider that helping me, yeah.

Presuming that’s what happened, and it wasn’t a straw-man scam instead.

  • iamphoenix says:

I think it was an under the table/locker room bonus. No harm no foul, no murder charges or rape. So all in all, Chael Sonnen is just like you and me, except he makes commercials about himself and he has back acne. Also, Del Taco is my favorite.

  • NinjaCodah says:

Jim: I wouldn’t do it personally. I don’t condone Chael’s actions, maybe saying he was just saving someone else money was a little loose. But honestly, I don’t see it as a big deal, or something that could hurt the sport or anything. If someone would dig around the UFC in general, I’m pretty sure that person would find way way way worse than what Chael did.
