Calzaghe vs Hopkins in the spring?

After soundly defeating Matte Kessler on Saturday night, Joe Calzaghe and his manager threw down the gauntlet and challenged Bernard Hopkins to a fight. Not knowing a lot about boxing past the fact that it’s generally fucked up, I doubted we’d get to see this fight any time soon. But it looks like Hopkins is willing and eager to fight as well:

“He said after the fight that he would fight me anywhere, even in my backyard, but I’m not asking him to come to Philadelphia,” Hopkins said. “I wouldn’t ask him to come to anywhere but Yankee Stadium. Hopefully for boxing, and for our legacy, it will happen.”

Hopkins is keenly aware of the storied boxing history of the fabled building that will close in 2008. Legends Sugar Ray Robinson, Joe Louis and Muhammad Ali, among others, all fought at Yankee Stadium, and Hopkins wants to be part of a final fight there.

“How great would it be,” Hopkins said. “This is a big fight. What a great promotion. The Brits will come. They got a direct flight from there to New York City. So am I interested in the fight? Absolutely. Do I feel I can give him his first loss? Yes. Can I neutralize the best weapon my opponent has and use it against him? Yes. His best weapon is that he throws a lot of punches. I know how to adjust to any style out there.”

This sounds pretty damned good. Is it just me or has boxing finally gotten it’s head out of it’s ass and started showing some damned good fights. With the help of Mayweather/De La Hoya, their PPV revenues have hit a new record, and that’s without several other big PPV fights over the course of the next two months.

As I’ve said before, I’m not a huge boxing fan. But if the quality and quantity of main events stays up like this, I might have to change my stance on the sport.

    Hopkins is boring though.

  • Vee says:

Boxing is also having a great year.

Hopkins has a very defensive style, he’s dirty and he capitalizes off of his opponent’s mistakes. Translation, he’s a bit boring, but I will still watch him compete. He’s a 40+ fighter in phenomenal shape and has great conditioning. Yeah, he’s not going to go and pound away for the first 5 rounds but he knows what he’s doing.

  • Accomando says:

Calzaghe will make it interesting. He threw over 1,000 punches in the fight with Kessler.

  • intenso says:

    That’s what everybody thought about Taylor-Hopkins 1.

  • Yeah, Calzaghe seems to have a style that isn’t dictated by his opponent

  • frickshun says:

It would be an ugly fight for casual fans. I would love it. I dig the really technical fights where the fighters are constantly trying to adjust to each other. Unfortunately, you might only get a few definitively scored rounds which will become an argument for bad scoring. Plus, they both seem to have amazing chins so nobody will get rocked.

  • intenso says:

Bernard Hopkins ALWAYS dictates the style, I don’t care who he’s fighting.

  • Jonathan says:

How dare we disgrace MMA by talking about boxing HERE of all places..

Come on, let’s talk about Rickson Gracie or something.

  • Intenso … when the time comes, I’ll be happy to make a wager of some description with you on the outcome of this one :-)

  • anderson says:

how dare you sir. instead of digressing and mentioning boxing of all things, you should still be trying to get to the bottom of who farted at ufc 77 during silva’s victory speech. awesome fight though.

  • Tommy says:

Mosley vs Cotto should be special. Don’t bet him intenso. If you win he’ll try to pay you with nudes of himself!!! He will wear a bra and panty set if you like though.

  • Tommy says:

By the way his name is Mikkel Kessler.

  • marco9690 says:

fuck boxing,……… I’d rather see Ross Pointon fight anyone, than watch a boxing match

  • intenso says:

Ryan: I’m not predicting a Hopkins win, just a boring fight. Even if Calzaghe wins, he’s going to do it fighting BHop’s style.

  • Accomando says:

Calzaghe is a cut above, yes, even above old Bernard Popkins. Taylor doesn’t have anything close to what Joe-C brings to the table. It would look nothing like Taylor/Hopkins 1 or 2.

Hand speed and footwork would win the day for Calzaghe.

  • Ted Dibiase says:

Ross Pointon vs Elvis Sinosic is more interesting than this SHIT

  • I grew up watching boxing and then transitioned to mma. I refuse to watch any boxing these days except for Cotto or Paquio. The Mayweather-DeLa Hoya fight was technically fantastic but it put alot my friends to sleep.

  • Ross”the Gladiator” Pointon. He always gives a good fight.
I rather watch James “The Colossus” thompson

  • Accomando says:

Ted Dibiase, you Puff, boxing was fighting before MMA came around, you tool, shut-up, and don’t comment on the boxing posts then if the thought of boxing gets your thong all twisted.
