Bye bye Cris Cyborg?

The Cris Cyborg situation gets worse:

Asked for a gut reaction on whether the two would find common ground and reach a mutually beneficial agreement, a source close to the action paused before letting out a big sigh.

“To be honest, I just don’t see it happening,” the source said.

I’m not feeling particularly positive regarding WMMA’s chances in Zuffa Land at the moment. Maybe they went into things looking to give it an honest go but as the Japanese learned, it doesn’t take long for the UFC to pull the plug if things start to go awry. Between being unable to re-sign their 145 pound champion and Gina Carano flaking out, they’re out of their two biggest female stars. The clock is ticking on Strikeforce’s existence. Maybe WMMA can rally in a year … and maybe not.

  • Billytk says:

The sad truth is that through no fault of her own Cyborg killed WMMA, Gina was the driving force bringing WMMA to the general public once Cyborg took away her mystic and forced her out the chance at mainstream popularity and marketability died and with that so did any chance Dana would keep it going once Zuffa bought strikeforce.

  • Letibleu says:

I agree. And I really hate agreeing with you right now.

Dana has stated that the only thing stopping WMMA is bodies. Not enough fighters at the moment.

Small shows have to step it up to make WMMA viable for new talent. Zuffa is unwilling to spend energy, time or money on the matter. WMMA might end up being second tier like woman’s baseball, football and hockey. No Cyborg and no Carano means WMMA is at a crossroads in North America. I have trouble believing that we are at the point where the mid term future lies in the hands of only 2 fighters. Doesn’t seem right when there is talent out there. Just maybe not enough of them in quantity.

  • DJ ThunderElbows says:

Or Gina could have fought through her Unicorn Tumor and brought it back.  Her movie career is built on the fame MMA gave her so Cyborg can blame her for not giving back.

Also, she could have trained for the Cyborg fight instead of wasting her camp dieting.

Also also, Cyborg could’ve signed on the dotted line realizing this was her best chance to earn more in the future while keeping the “division” afloat.

But this is all arbitrary blamism.

  • Blackula Jonez says:

Time for Rebney and Bellator to come in and do what they do best, scooping up talent that Zuffa isn’t paying attention to.

Maybe then Ryan will finally give a damn about Bellator, instead of super relevent k1 tournaments.

  • glassjawsh says:

baffling to me that anyone would worry about there not being a torch bearer for women’s mma when THIS EXISTS

yes im suggesting that people like roxy stake their livelyhood on how amazing miesha tate’s bubble butt is

  • Billytk says:

if Miesha could get a media push like Gina did (as long as they highlight her body and not too many close ups on the face lol) she may actually be able to reignite casual fan interest in WMMA as long as no one lets Cyborg rape her.

damn can’t get the pic to embed oh well

  • glassjawsh says:

ps. what face?? no one gives a shit about it (and it’s not that bad at all in comparision to 95% of WMMA fighters)

  • fightlinker says:

    There ya go.

    And I raise you

Re: bellator, i will pay attention to them sooner or later I’m sure. It’s just another league that i’d have to do massive amounts of research on, and I’m already up to my neck keeping up with the goings on of UFC and Strikeforce. I’m just one man! So for now I’ll pay attention when they do a fight that interests me.

And I don’t really cover K-1, I just occasionally make fun of it / rage against it :-)

  • frickshun says:

GODDAMN!! That last Miesha pic is good!! GOOD I SAY.

  • Symbul says:

The angle compliments her nose. The only thing that I have against Miesha Tate is that she portrays herself like a stripper or low-rent adult performer (which, sadly, are both probably more lucrative careers than high level women’s MMA). Just look at her twitter profile.

They didn’t really “fail” to sign Cyborg. If they’d wanted her, they would’ve made it work. She has nobody to fight and hasn’t had anyone since Gina. The best they can do is blemish 135lbs fighters’ careers with a one-off fight or throw green 145lbers at her, which is a waste of everyone’s time.

  • FiveBoltMain says:

wmma isn’t dead you fucktards. the 145 lb is dead. who the hell is cyborg suppose to fight? there’s no one for her to fight. so why sign a fighter if you can’t give her fights. people will bitch and complain if they gave her a scrub (like her last opponent). the 135 lb division is alive and doing pretty well. cyborg just has the unfortunate luck of being born when wmma is still in its infant state.

  • glassjawsh says:

    whats wrong with strippers?

  • DJ ThunderElbows says:

I hope they keep 135 going strong.  Maybe Cyborg will lose some weight?

  • Grappo says:

oh yeah… sucks about Cyborg.  I don’t know what’s up with the future of WMMA, but I fucking hope that it works out.   I really like watching the women fight.  I wish that Zuffa will decide to put a little effort into building it up, but I’m not holding my breath.  Even if it’s just a a fight-by-fight basis.  Am I crazy to think that there’s a potentially huge market for it, especially if its under the Zuffa/UFC banner?  Sad to think that it’s pretty much in the hands of Bellator.

  • CAP says:

That takedown gif is sweet. What a lucky guy, he almost got a handful!

  • Grappo says:

^ he got triangled right after that.   mmmm
