Brandon Vera ducks Machida

This here has been floating around for a while, but I was waiting to see if Brandon Vera would respond to the allegations. Since he hasn’t and the story is getting cold, I figure it’s time to put my own 2 cents (or rather 1 cent and a smelly wood chip) into da mix:

According to Lyoto Machida, Bradon Vera has declined to fight him on the UFC’s July 19th card that’ll go up against Affliction’s Pay-Per-View. Machida told Brazilian magazine Tatame, “it is true. The [UFC] offer me, but Brandon Vera didn’t want this fight.” It would’ve been a fairly quick turnaround for Vera as he just suffered his second straight loss to Fabricio Werdum at UFC 85.

It’s no surprise to me that no one wants to fight Machida. Back when Kalib Starnes ran away from Nate Quarry for three rounds, I said there was nothing worse than training your ass off for months only to have your opponent refuse to fight. But there actually IS something worse than that: your opponent refuses to fight, and you LOSE THE FIGHT ANYWAYS.

That’s basically what you have to look forward to when you face off with Machida: a guy who will avoid everything you throw at him and then hit you four or five times for the win. Since no one has beaten him yet, we’re not even sure if winning against Machida could be done in entertaining fashion, so it’s pretty much a lose / lose situation no matter how you slice it.

If I was a professional fighter (and I am in my dreams some nights, riding a unicorn across the sky with my arms wrapped tightly around Dana White), I’d avoid Machida like the fucking plague. The guy is currently an oddity in the UFC, a guy who’s style is so fucked up and odd that it’s not worth being one of the guinea pigs forced to try and solve him. I’m still pretty confident that someone will come along with the key, but it sure as hell ain’t Brandon Vera.

If Karo ducks Fitch who you consider a boring fighter, he’s a pussy.
If Vera ducks Machida who you consider a boring fighter, he’s smart

    Which is it?

  • Mike_N says:

“A guy who will avoid everything you throw at him and then hit you four or five times for the win.”

Best description I’ve seen of Machida yet. And yeah, I did see the Sokoudjou fight.

  • Fightlinker Jackal says:

You comparing smeely Starnes to Machida? Lay off the pipe.

  • Johnny says:

Until Lyoto gets some more power to his strikes (not a remote hope, considering he trains with Anderson Silva) or the UFC rules change, we’ll continue to see Lyoto use the same tactics.

    Lyoto for a title shot!

  • Johnny says:

“A guy who will avoid everything you throw at him and then hit you four or five times for the win.”

… is an exaggeration for “persuasive” effect. I just remembered a post by cyph in “Why Lyoto Machida sucks” (May 26), concerning the Ortiz fight:

“Rd 1: Machida attempted 34 attacks, hitting 23, Tito attempted 18, hitting ZERO.
Rd 2: Machida attempted 20 attacks, hitting 17. Tito attempted 19, hitting 6.”

That’s 40 connecting strikes in the first two rounds, which is a rate of 4 strikes per minute, and 34 more than Tito.

    So, corrected for accuracy:

“[Machida is] a guy who will avoid everything you throw at him and then hit you fifty or sixty times for the win.”

  • Steve says:

I’m with Johnny on this one.

Machida is poetry in motion. Just because he’s not dumb enough to prevent a stationary target (like 90% of the guys in MMA) doesn’t mean he is running away.

Watch his fights with Sok, Franklin, or Bonnar. If you put him up against a guy who is willing to stand & trade, he will gladly wade into the pocket and the blast the guy repeatedly. His 45 minutes of untouchable domination versus Hoger/Heath/Nakamura was a beautiful ballet of beatdowns.

  • Steve says:

present a stationary target, not prevent.

  • kentyman says:

Johnny said it before I could. I concur.

  • FRANKIE says:

Still riding the Machida Hate Train, huh? I find that somewhat sad. I hope you see the light soon.

  • P W says:

I’ve got absolutely nothing against Machida. Just because you’re a fighter it doesn’t mean you have to ENJOY getting hit in the face. I’m with Johnny too. Put Machida up against some real bad asses so we can see how good he really is.

  • Márcio says:

This article is not only sad but kind of retarded. You really should stop this pointless Machida bashing, when you compare Starnes and Machida you come up alot less smart than I thought you were.
Now Vera is smart for ducking Machida and Karo (way higher in the welterweight ranks than Vera at LH) was a pussy for not wanting to fight Alves before his title shot. I’m guessing keeping a coherent thought isn’t important to you because you’re only trying to be funny, but I’m sad to tell you you failed at that as well.

  • godzillad says:

“Watch his fights with Sok, Franklin, or Bonnar. If you put him up against a guy who is willing to stand & trade, he will gladly wade into the pocket and the blast the guy repeatedly.”

Bullshit. He didn’t trade with Soko. Franklin was beating him before the knee. Bonnar went in wailing like he always did back then and made himself a sitting duck for the one punch Macchio connected with. Watch the fights homey, don’t be scared of them. Ignorant ass.

  • Gza says:

This post belongs on the back of that unicorn (which, by the way, wouldn’t be able to fly. You’re confusing unicorns with Pegasus.) Hate his style, but don’t make up fantasies about what he actually does in the ring.

  • I never called Karo a pussy for ducking Fitch

ps unicorns fly on rainbows DUH

  • Johnny says:

“I am in my dreams some nights, riding a unicorn across the sky….”

    “unicorns fly on rainbows.”

    Rainbows don’t exist at night.

  • CaptainAmerica1967 says:

Put Machida’s ass in there with me and he’s done…just kidding, but someone will beat him with clinch, dirty boxing or ground and pound. BJ Penn did pretty well the first round and then Machida ran the next two.

  • Zurich says:

What Johnny said… Machida ducks everything he throws at you, then hits you 60 times for the win… he might even throw some sick jumping switch-kicks, flying KO-knees to the liver, or submit you too.

  • RL Dookiefuck says:

Machida kicks ass goddamn this entire post is idiotic.

  • dumdum says:

i would like to see Wanderlei vs Machida… but i read somewhere that Wanderlei passed on Machida also…

  • Ross says:

Machida vs Shogun would be great.

  • cyph says:

FL is still bitter his man-crush Tito lost. Three stages of an MMA fighter-fan break up:

    1. Denial
    2. Acceptance
    3. Embrace.

FL is still at stage #2. You have accepted that Tito lost and he sucks balls, but now you need to embrace the fighter who beat him. Admit it, Machida is the greatest MMA fighter since your boy Tito Ortiz.

  • Jason says:

Nobody wants to fight somebody who is guranteed to have the live crowd booing at you everytime.
Does anybody think the UFC is honestly going to give Machida a title shot when live crowds cant stand him? They already went through the Tim Sylvia reign, sure that was enough for them.

  • Hammer says:

Steve wins.. He seems to understand stand up/boxing unlike Kim Coutures approach to defend with her face.

  • The irony is Machida Nuthuggers can claim Vera ducked him for being too elusive.

  • The Law says:

Top 2 things wrong with FL:
    1. Tito Ortiz nuthugging
    2. Machida hating

  • crs says:

i’m damn proud to still be riding the Machida Hate Train. And Jon Fitch is Fedor compared to Machida in terms of action.

I really hope the LWH’s band together and all refuse to fight him until he grows a set of balls. Well, they should have done that with Koscheck too years ago, but still. I’m absolutely amazed this pussy has so many fans, at least until he loses when the bandwagon empties.

  • kentyman says:

Maybe one of those LHWs should beat him.

Easier said than done, huh? Then maybe he’s pretty good at this game.

  • Johnny says:

Rampage is Machida’s worst nightmare, IMO. But that goes for a lot of LHWs too. I’d love to see him fight someone good enough to beat him, whoever it is.

  • smoogleton says:

Comparing Starnes and Machida is a great way to let visitors know you’re too retarded to give even the most basic assessment of MMA
