This here has been floating around for a while, but I was waiting to see if Brandon Vera would respond to the allegations. Since he hasn’t and the story is getting cold, I figure it’s time to put my own 2 cents (or rather 1 cent and a smelly wood chip) into da mix:
According to Lyoto Machida, Bradon Vera has declined to fight him on the UFC’s July 19th card that’ll go up against Affliction’s Pay-Per-View. Machida told Brazilian magazine Tatame, “it is true. The [UFC] offer me, but Brandon Vera didn’t want this fight.” It would’ve been a fairly quick turnaround for Vera as he just suffered his second straight loss to Fabricio Werdum at UFC 85.
It’s no surprise to me that no one wants to fight Machida. Back when Kalib Starnes ran away from Nate Quarry for three rounds, I said there was nothing worse than training your ass off for months only to have your opponent refuse to fight. But there actually IS something worse than that: your opponent refuses to fight, and you LOSE THE FIGHT ANYWAYS.
That’s basically what you have to look forward to when you face off with Machida: a guy who will avoid everything you throw at him and then hit you four or five times for the win. Since no one has beaten him yet, we’re not even sure if winning against Machida could be done in entertaining fashion, so it’s pretty much a lose / lose situation no matter how you slice it.
If I was a professional fighter (and I am in my dreams some nights, riding a unicorn across the sky with my arms wrapped tightly around Dana White), I’d avoid Machida like the fucking plague. The guy is currently an oddity in the UFC, a guy who’s style is so fucked up and odd that it’s not worth being one of the guinea pigs forced to try and solve him. I’m still pretty confident that someone will come along with the key, but it sure as hell ain’t Brandon Vera.
