Boxing gets it done, books an actual good match

Well, I was pretty excited for the Joe Calzaghe / Bernard Hopkins boxing bout that was just announced, until I realized that they’re putting it on the same weekend that the UFC is in Montreal (April 19th, bitches). Oh well … it’s not like I’ll be sober enough that weekend to spoil the fight before I get to watch it on Sunday night or something.

For those of you who don’t know, Joe Calzaghe is my favorite boxer of all time, which isn’t really saying that much because I’ve only watched about 15 boxing matches in my entire life. But still, the guy is unconventional, aggressive and entertaining. Add in the fact that he and Hopkins have held titles for decades and you’ve got the makings of an epic bout between two veterans of the sport.

I don’t know what the fuck is up with boxing lately. The sport seems on an upswing, with more and more great bouts coming together. Bernard Hopkins actually thanked MMA for waking boxing promoters up and showing them what they needed to do to fix the sport, and I really think he might be right. The next six months of boxing is stacked with great bouts, title unifications, and surprisingly little drama. Well okay, there’s still drama. But at least the fights are actually getting booked and aren’t getting canceled.
