BJ Penn joins the judging fray

BJ’s solution to decision-oriented fighters and bad judging? No belts, no judges, any fight that isn’t finished is ruled an automatic draw. Guys with the most draws are at the bottom of the pay scale, while the guys with the most wins (i.e. finishes) are at the top. The “no judges/draw if it doesn’t finish” thing is pretty standard fare for a guy that came up under Gracie influence, but BJ’s the first fighter I’ve heard advocating that the sport have no champions. Is this an awesome idea, a terrible idea, or both?

    Is BJ really PW?

The belt/champion status is how we know who the best is. The rounds, time limits and 10 point must system is how you turn a toughman contest into a government regulated sport.

Why don’t we get rid of drug testing and athletic commisions, add weapons when a fight goes too long, do away with weight classes, referees, have men fight women and children fight animals and the winner gets to have their way with the remains of the loser.

Now thats a sport fans will pay money to see.

I’d bet every cent I have BJ wouldn’t have made the no belt idea part of his suggestion before he met Frankie back when he thought he’d hold the belt for as long as he chose.

Or even back when he was delusional enough to think he could take the WW belt from GSP

Slow down there, Assemblyman Reilly. lol, just kiddin’. But I don’t think a slippery-slope argument like this is an effective counter to fans wanting more finishes in the fights they watch. You might watch the sport for technique but Bubba and Bobby down at the Hooters watch it for knockouts, blood and subs. And Bubba and Bobby are the UFC’s bread and butter.

I now believe BJ penn has the IQ of a f**king gold fish that would be the stupidest thing ever what would be the point of watching ..Easy betting though i guess with easy betting BJ finally win some money and buy some new friends that wil actually sit there and listen to his crap ….GO GO GSP greasegate

I have to admit though the “every fight not finished is a draw” thing to get rid of the judges actually sounds kind of appealing although I have seen fights where one guy was clearly dominate and beat his opponent to within a inch of his life but the guy just wouldn’t stay down or give up so it would be insane to call those fights a DRAW

Maybe some of you don’t understand the “warrior spirit”. I’m impressed w/BJ’s thinking here. Yes, it’s old school & no it’s not possible. But the idea…..it’s what we all want. We want to know who can win a sanctioned street fight. Fuck the belts getting hung up on injuries or reality shows. Fuck the “fighter X won 5 in a row so he gets a shot even though he’s undeserving”. Fuck Cruz’ awful performance this past weekend (yes, he looked awful). It’s about attempting to finish. Machida gets that. Why don’t you dumbasses??

  • Monstrosity says:

allow judges to scores rounds 10 – 10. im so sick of people winning rounds with no solid strikes landed or quality subs attempted.

and i know its been brought up a lot. but please bring back the yellow cards for stalling. some fighters need the motivation.

Jon Fitch would draw so much that even casual fans would start to think he was an artist.

  • Sodomize Intolerance says:

Would losses due to finish be worth more in the payscale than a draw?  If a draw is middle-of-the-pack, then people will still fight to draw rather than risk the loss.  If a loss is worth more than a draw, then I could join the UFC and get T/KO’d and subbed 10 times and still make more than guys who fight their hearts out only to find it was a good matchup.

Problem is this: People hate decisions.  Decisions often arise from good matchups.  And that is why we get freakshow squash matches in other organizations and why the UFC usually puts a requisite “These fighters are shit, but they like to brawl” fight on the card.

Fuck, my cover is blown! I knew I should have picked a better alias than simply two other random initials. I guess it’s back to eating pineapples full time now.
