BJ Penn is too good for the lightweight division

Guess who’s not sticking around at lightweight to cement a legacy as the best lightweight of all time? It’s BJ Penn!

So much for drama and secrets, B.J. Penn spilled the beans with Fighters Club TV. He talks about moving up to 170 in his next fight. This is contingent on the Georges St. Pierre-Jon Fitch winner at UFC 87 in August coming out of the fight healthy. The Penn v. GSP/Fitch fight would be the main event at UFC’s annual close to the year card on December 27th in Las Vegas.

I will admit … Penn vs St Pierre 2 is infinitely more interesting than the idea of Penn vs Florian or Huerta. But BJ just won the goddamn lightweight belt, and that was after it was in limbo forever because of Sean goddamn Sherk. Now the division finally gets sorted and all of a sudden the belt is back in limbo? Is BJ giving it up to fight at 170? Or will he only let the belt go if he beats St Pierre? And why am I completely ignoring the possibility of Jon Fitch beating Georges St Pierre? Because that’s very very very unlikely? That wasn’t a question? My period key is broken so all my sentences have to end in question marks now? Sorry?

    155lb Champion B.J. Penn vs.
The New Undefeated 170lb Champion John Fitch

  • The size of Bj’s ego is finally catching up with the size of his head.

  • Damn. Dont want sean sherk as champion again

  • Burtonchik says:

doesn’t bj penn realize that he looks (and moves) like a blimp at 170lb??

either way, bj v. gsp 2 will be a nice (late) christmas present

  • garth says:

penn-gsp 2 made me feel funny in my front.

  • x5BoltMainx says:

He kind of looks like a mini-Tito, but w/o any hair.

  • jakey says:

Fighting Gsp is his number one priority now that he has the belt – the loss last time is hanging over him like the pulver one did. If he can fight the same at 170 with the same power and cardio as hes had in his last 2 fights he can do it and i hope he does

  • godzillad says:

Fighters are getting fucking stupid. Hughes never thought about going to 185 until he beat Frank Trigg the second time. Which was 7 years after pretty much dominating 170 (fuck the bad Pele stoppage).

Hughes is gonna be a legend for dominating a weight class for years, and now these fuckers want to move up after 3-4 fights instead of cementing a legacy. As Norm MacDonald would say after getting sodomized: “Ridiculous!”.

  • jakey says:

As Godzillad would say before getting sodomized –
“Please dominate me in the ring for 7 years Matt Hughes”

  • JackalAss says:

come on, doesn’t BJ look more like a cabbage patch kid than anything?

  • Popetastic says:

Gotta love a Dirty Work reference.

  • Higgz says:

I understand your thoughts, but, I still think the more compelling matches are at 170 for BJ right now. Why should he spend his primet years fighting guys who are a couple of years behind his skill set?

And since when does cementing a legacy require staying in one weight class? Nobody whined about Randy Couture switching weightclasses whenever he got beat twice–instead he’s heralded for having won belts int two different weightclasses.

I think fighting and beating the best guys in different weight classes is more of a legacy then beating guys who aren’t on your level.

All I want for Christmas is: BJ Penn VS GSP II.

  • crs says:

I gotta disagree on a 2nd GSP fight being more interesting. Maybe it is to the newer fans, the ones who also gave a crap about the Liddell-Ortiz rematch. But the hardcores couldn’t care less about it and would MUCH rather see what BJ and Huerta would be like. I know I would. I think Pierre will have an even easier time with BJ than he did 2 years ago.

I never want to see BJ fighting at 170 ever again, because it’s always going to be the same thing. He looks like the best fighter in the universe in round one, gasses out in round two, and is easy prey in round three. That extra 15 pounds ruins him.

  • Johnny says:

    lol @ sticky periods

  • jakey says:

crs i think he s in a different mind set now from when he last fought hughes. if he can train right and eat right while putting on the weight he could be the same force as he seems to be at lightweight just now. As long as he dont eat too much and get all doughy – remember him in the trailer for the usa v canada ufc?!

  • wayne gretzky says:

BJ is too good for the lightw,
Silva is too good for his,
    GSP is ….

how about we just say the opposition sucks instead that all the champions are unbeatable?
