It was something of a tangy rumor before but now it’s official: Big John McCarthy will be returning to the UFC octagon to ref at this Sunday’s UFC on Versus card. I consider this a gift from God because He was the one that made Mormons so lame that the UFC had to move it’s show from Salt Lake City to California, where BJM can still get gigs.
McCarthy’s wife Elaine confirmed to MMA Fighting that he has been assigned by the California State Athletic Commission to officiate matches at the event, which takes place on Sunday at the San Diego Sports Arena in San Diego, Calif.
Elaine McCarthy said he does not yet know what specific fights he will handle during the evening, and that he would not be providing any comments or interviews about his return prior to the event.
In other words, Big John doesn’t want to make a big deal about returning to UFC events after a 2.5 year absence, lest the situation becomes political and hurts his chances of more gigs. So to aid him in this, let’s just pretend there’s nothing special about the best ref in the business finally being back reffing the biggest MMA company’s events. After all, a good ref is the kind you never even notice.
