Former WEC bantamweight champ Chase Beebe had his 5-fight win streak snapped by a split decision loss to fellow WEC veteran Marcos Galvão that should have been unanimous. Chase seemed to blow his load in the first round as the two traded sub attempts, allowing Marcos to win at least two rounds both standing and on the mat, though only two of the judges saw it that way. Speaking of bad judging, you may recall Galvão as the same guy who got royally fucked in a non-title ” target=”_blank”>screwjob against Joe Warren at Bellator 41, but I guess we won’t be seeing the rematch in this tourney. I’d advise Galvão to finish his Bellator fights from now on, because judges don’t seem to like him much.
Kicking off the main card, Season 3 runner-up Ed “Wild” West used movement and distance to win a unanimous decision over Luis “Really Little” Nogueira in a match that was more entertaining than that makes it sound. The Brazilian ear-beating that Nogueira’s corner gave him between rounds just wasn’t enough to overcome the positive affirmation of West’s corner (“You’re a fuckin legend! You’re just gettin warmed up! Throw a fireball at him!”), and West earned the nod of the judges two rounds to one.
In undercard knockouts on the Spike.com prelims, Dan Spohn (6-0) made quick work of Dane Bonnigson (1-2) with a &t=4m0s” target=”_blank”>with his own flying knee. Good stuff, local dudes!
Decent fights all around, so check out the video links below. The bantamweight semifinals are expected for Bellator 55 on October 22nd, and in case you’re wondering who the champ is anyway (don’t feel too bad), Zack “Fun Size” Makovsky (13-2) decision’d his way through the Season 3 field last fall, and has rode the bench since except for a non-title TKO of Some Guy in April. Ed West had him in trouble early in last year’s final, and he’d likely have his hands full with any of these semifinalists, particularly a strong wrestler with heavy hands like Vila. But first, rumour has it that he’ll get another non-title squash super-fight against one-n’-done “UFC veteran” Ryan Roberts (16-9-1) at Bellator 54 on October 15th.
