Babalu turns down title shot, wants Hendo

The plan was to have the winner of the Lawler / Babalu fight set up a title fight at either 185 or 205, but if Dana White can’t get friends and teammates to fight, why did Strikeforce think it could force that through? After winning a toss up decision, Babalu refused to bow to pressure from Mauro Ranallo that he ‘be professional’ and fight his BFF King Mo for the light heavyweight belt, instead saying this:

“I won’t never punch and try to hurt my friends, but I would like to ask for a fight, and all the respect that I have, in the beginning of my career I fought Dan Henderson in Japan and lost to him,” Babalu said.

The fight Sobral is referring to was the finale of a one-night “King of Kings” tournament held in the Rings organization. With each already having two fights under their belt that night, Sobral and Henderson met in the finals with Henderson picking up the majority decision win in a razor close bout.

Back on the winning track by beating Lawler, it appears Sobral is going to pass fighting his friend even if a title is on the line, and try to make a second fight with Henderson a reality.

“I don’t want to disrespect, but I would like to fight him. It’s going to be 11 years since I fought him. It’s a long time, and please, it would be an honor to fight him again, to have the chance to fight Dan Henderson,” said Sobral.

With the title shot offer only good apparently at 205 pounds (if Lawler had won, a fight with Jacare had been proposed), Strikeforce is back to planning a 185 pound tournament in 2-3 months with Dan Henderson’s participation. Babalu might be able to get in on that, but there are a few big questions, like will the massive vagina of a cut on his forehead heal in time, and would he be able to drop the final 10 pounds properly to compete at middleweight?

Then there’s always the option of having Hendo and Babalu face off at 195 or 205 with the winner facing the light heavyweight champ. Strikeforce sounds like they’re about to set up King Mo vs Rafael Cavalcante for August so there’s even a good chance the whole Babalu / King Mo friendship wouldn’t stand in the way of a shot then.
