Aoki: I won’t fight at DREAM.3

Oh, the tangled web weaved around Shinya Aoki vs JZ Calvan. The DREAM lightweight tournament is already kinda strange, with one fighter getting a free pass into the second round for no apparent reason other than disorganized bookings. Now it seems like there might be a second berth that needs filling, because Shinya Aoki is saying he’s not interested in fighting at DREAM.3 if he beats JZ:

– Are you thinking about fighting on May 11 in DREAM 3?
I win on Apr 29, but not fight on May 11. That’s their business and not me. I’m not well-considered person to agree with fighting on May 11. I’m not thinking about a fight after Apr 29. I may fight if I had an easy fight on Apr 29.
– Don’t you want a belt?
Not interested in. My next fight has more meaning than a belt.

Hmm, I wonder why so many fans accuse Aoki of wussing out of fights with injuries? I was kinda going for Shinya simply because I dig his tights, but now I’d rather have JZ win so the tournament isn’t potentially screwed up any more than it has to be.

you can’t fault a guy for saying he’s not likely to fight again, two weeks after fighting someone who ended their last fight via foul.

  • Carcass says:

I know that Suki has been accused of misrepresentation before so I’ve read the original post and here’s my own translation of the part you quoted:

Aoki: ‘Although I will win on the 29th of April, I won’t do it [fight] on the 11th of May! These are not my conditions, but theirs [DREAM’s]. That’s probably because I’m not someone who is able to take people’s circumstances into account (‘bitter laugh’). I’m certainly not thinking at all about what happens next. On the contrary, if I get a quick win and my personal circumstances are favourable, I might fight. That’s all there is to it.

Interviewer: Are you interested in getting the belt?

Aoki: ‘I’ve not thought about it at all! (laughs). Anyway, my next match is a decisive one. I’m just going to lay it all on the line and fight. This time around I think I must do everything in my power to change things and avoid any trouble or confusion. When I win, I want it to be because of my own skills.

    Interviewer – How’s your self-belief?

Aoki – ‘Self-belief’ has nothing to do with it. I’ll beat him down anyway [lit. ‘I will show you a win.’].

Carcass: So, as you can see, different translations can help a bit…Suki definitely missed out a lot of detail – her translations are not word-for-word, more just giving the general gist of things. I don’t doubt that this is for time reasons though, rather than anything else!

  • It really doesn’t matter, Aoki doesn’t have any tools to beat “JZ” other than his ground game, which JZ was able to fend off for the little time they fought. Aoki looked like a mouse trying to takedown an elephant during the matchup, so it’s going to be tough for Aoki to win regardless.

  • Atom says:

Thanks for the re-translation. I don’t see how anyone can fault him for not wanting to fight again 12 days after he fights the #3 LW in the world. Would that even be allowed in the U.S.? They better have a replacement ready, at least he’s given DREAM a little notice about this. Wasn’t there someone else pretty good that was going to get the free pass to the second round if it hadn’t been Uno? Seems like a logical choice now as a backup plan.

  • Atom says:

Who says he has to take him down first before subbing him? I don’t think Aoki would be opposed to a victory via flying anything. :)

  • Captain says:

Who cares. JZ is gonna kick that pussy’s ass and this will all be moot.

  • DannyP72 says:

“Aoki – ‘Self-belief’ has nothing to do with it. I’ll beat him down anyway”

Lol, Aoki is a good fighter but he’s not gonna beat down on anyone

  • Carcass says:

Erm Danny, you’ll see from the square brackets that what he actually said was (literally) “I’ll show you a win” – its just that translating it idiomatically from Japanese it approximates to ‘I’m gonna kick his ass’ 😀

  • DannyP72 says:

Yeah my bad. Thought it sounded stupid :)

  • Nate says:

Aoki is a pussy and a bitch, but it doesn’t really matter, they could fight a hundred times and JZ would kO him 50 times. The other 50 would be Aoki faking injury.
